Nike, once a dominant force in the #sports #apparel industry, has seen its market value plummet by over 50% since its peak in November 2021, dropping from $275 billion to $125 billion. 📉 The significant drop in early June was driven by disappointing quarterly earnings, which revealed not just a decline in profits but also stagnation in top-line growth. 👟 Nike’s Market Shift: From Competing with #Adidas to Facing On and HOKA 🛑 While Nike traditionally competes with brands like adidas and PUMA Group (that have also been struggling to grow), it’s important to recognize that almost two-thirds of Nike’s sales come from footwear. 🎯 This makes Nike more comparable to emerging niche brands like ON and HOKA, which have been gaining market share at Nike’s expense. . 📈 Growth Comparison: ON and HOKA Surging Ahead 🚀 HOKA® saw an impressive 29.7% increase in net sales, reaching $545.2 million in Q1 2024. 📈 ON Holding AG reported a 20.9% rise in net sales, which equates to a 29.2% increase on a constant currency basis. 📉 Meanwhile, Nike's footwear revenue, which makes up the bulk of its sales, declined by 3.63% in the most recent quarter. 💡 Even with Jordan’s growth of 6%, Nike is facing stiff competition from these up-and-coming brands, especially as they continue to gain traction with younger consumers. 🏬 The Impact of Nike Direct on Growth 🔄 Nike’s strategic shift towards direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales, cutting ties with many previous distributors in favor of their own stores and online platforms, has not gone as smoothly as hoped. 📉 While wholesale revenues grew by 5%, Nike Direct revenues fell by 8%, with declines in both online sales (down 10%) and in-store sales (down 2%). 🤔 This shift may have contributed to the brand’s recent struggles, as it attempts to balance control over distribution with the risk of alienating traditional retail partners. 🏆Notwithstanding, #Nike is still by far the leading player in the sports apparel industry, generating over twice the revenue of Adidas, over five times that of Puma, nine times that of Under Armour, and twenty-four times that of On. 💪While Nike may be facing some challenges, the gap between it and its competitors remains substantial. These other brands have a lot of ground to cover before they can pose a serious challenge to Nike's market leadership.

How do you encourage fans to shop more sustainably while still promoting your brand sponsors new kit? Quiet influence. England recently released a video to announce their line up for the Euros, 18 seconds into the video they show a fan shopping for England shirts in a vintage shop. Throughout the video they also show past seasons shirts, intermixed with this years strip, and shirts and tees that look worn, creased and anything but new. But why is this important…? 1. Showcasing vintage as the first destination to buy a shirt is pretty groundbreaking given the main goal of brands and clubs is to sell more new garments. This is a direct conflict of interest for a linear business model- that’s a brave move. 2. It shows fans it’s ok to wear an old shirt. It encourages fans to consider wearing a shirt they already have or buying preloved/pre owned, extending the life of existing garments. Essentially circular business models in action. 3. It moves away from the box fresh pristine idea of promoting new clothing. It shows garments that have had a life and are part of someone’s life, encouraging fans to keep, wear and love the shirts they already own. Building emotional durability- a key asset for the circular economy. The interesting thing is that England didn’t need to do this and 95% of fans won’t even consciously notice, but that’s why it’s clever. Circularity requires a change in mindset in how we consume. Often the communication around sustainability can come over as hypocritical when clubs and brands actively speak out, but by including this footage in the video it subtly and almost subconsciously encourages behaviour change, having a quiet influence that can have a massive impact. #football #euros #circularity

Is VF Corporation about to announce the offloading of streetwear brand Supreme just four years after acquiring it? It is no secret that VFC is reviewing its brand portfolio with a view to slimming down and selling off some parts of the business. It sees this as a way of generating returns and as a mechanism to help it focus more what it sees as the growth opportunities in its portfolio. There is a sense that VFC is a bit overgrown and needs to be pruned. With specific regard to Supreme, the brand has lost its luster and it has had issues under VFC ownership; it now seems to be growing again but it’s just not as exciting a brand as it used to be. There is also the question of whether Supreme, which is still run by its founder, fits into VFC’s rather corporate structure. Any sale will hinge on VFC getting the right price and finding a buyer; both pretty big obstacles right now. Dear Bjorn Gulden, in life as in retail many things are inexplicable. However, the German Football Federation's recent decision to terminate their partnership with adidas and move to Nike as their new kit supplier from 2027 is not one of them. Nike saw an opportunity to offer improved terms to the federation and outbid their rival amidst recent challenges. It's no surprise that the DFB jumped at the chance to accept such an offer, given the current economic situation and the recent performance of their team on the international soccer scene. On the other hand, Adidas has faced some inexplicable controversies in their own turf, including the recent debacle of the stylized font of the number '4' on the jerseys, reminiscent of the lightning-bolt symbols used by Nazi SS units in WWII. Additionally, there has been ambiguity surrounding the ongoing sales of Yeezy's leftover inventory in global markets. It's clear that Nike's conquesting tactics have paid off with this new partnership, providing a significant boost to their PR. As a result of the better-than-expected performance during the quarter, the company has increased its full-year guidance. adidas now expects currency-neutral revenues to increase at a mid- to high-single-digit rate in 2024 (previously: increase at a mid-single-digit rate). The company’s operating profit is now expected to reach a level of around € 700 million (previously: to reach a level of around € 500 million). The latest Yeezy drop generated revenues of around € 150 million and an operating profit of around € 50 million in the first quarter. In its guidance, the company assumes the sale of the remaining Yeezy inventory during the remainder of the year to occur on average at cost. This would result in additional sales of around € 200 million and no further profit contribution during the remainder of the year.

PIT STOP at Leuphana University in Lüneburg / Germany   On their Sustainability Day at the Center of University Sport, runamics GmbH was visiting for a short lecture:   Is sustainable sportswear a utopia?   We played myth-busters 👻   What myths are circulating in the sports/textile industry?   Myth 1: Plant-based materials can replace fossil-based materials. 👻 that wouldn't work at all, where to go with all the monocultures?   Myth 2: Bottle to shirt is circular economy. 👻 wrong, it's a dead end. Bottle --> T-Shirt --> Landfill. The textile industry has successfully distracted all of us. While producing millions of tons of textile waste every year, they took just an “easier to handle” waste and washed their hands clean. Scandal? You decide.   Myth 3: Biobased = biodegradable. 👻 these are 2 different things   Myth 4: Swimsuits only work for one competition, running shoes only for 400 km, etc. 👻 if you are a professional athlete these figures may make sense, for 99.8% of us hobby athletes they don´t   Myth 5: Vegan sportswear is sustainable 👻 Indeed, plastic is vegan. But plastic kills animals, it doesn't safe them.   Myth 6: Fiber to fiber recycling is not there yet 👻 hell yes, it is. The current development speed is incredible.   Any myth missing? Information is key to Product Review!! To offer real value, there is a need to be aware that feel of a shoe is a very personal thing, but too soft is never a valuable feature for movement - except fur a very few users! All foams can be non-supercritical- SC is a manufacturing process (the best for Run midsoles) not a foam! The widest process still used by most brands is Compression moulded and that can be done with any foam. Yes most still done in EVA but increasingly with blended polymers from the PU family. It can still offer quality performance midsoles. Puma-Brooks have implemented the widest styles usage of Super Critical processing. Brooks is replacing the looks and dimensions of CM midsoles with SC premium foams! Puma is making some rather unorthodox midsoles - plate combos that are really like F1 offerings! Then there are two types of Super Critical processing with what I feel, offer very different results in the foams ( mostly in consistency of resiliency, compression features) , as well one of them a semi expansion with Nitrogen usually - then it has an oven cooking and then the final compression - that uses much more energy to produce a pair of midsoles. The articles mention of rides on the two Nike versions could well be the same polymer and same processing and simply be a question of hardness/durometer! Nike does need to step into more SC processed products rapidly, which will mean working with suppliers not in their vertical shoe suppliers to gain novelty and catch up to Brooks/Puma/Hoka and likely adidas has to undergo the same remit! Decathalon- the large self branded retailer is offering elite witty foams on various styles under their K 900 series ( they are an excellent product) To DofR … there is no such thing- not yet- that’s a Super Critical foam ! Arkema is pushing polymer science at a fast pace as are others- feels like an arms race for resiliency! A race which will help the race! #supercritical #doctorsofrunning #arkema #technicalfootwear

Academy Sports + Outdoors has 282 stores, producing +$6 Billion in sales. With a five plan to add 160-180 new stores! Academy Sports + Outdoors Then you have NIKE, the athletic powerhouse, with sales bordering on $50 Billion! However they seem lost, weak sales growth, dazed and confused.
