Climate financing is going to the wrong places! Really insightful snapshot into the relationship between emissions and Climate tech VC by Daria Saharova (partner at World Fund) She states that: “85% of emissions receive only 52% of funding” And interestingly: - personal behavior change will reduce only 4.3% of emissions - technologies already in the market will account for 49.8% - technologies under development and in need of investment will need to fill in the rest. “46% of emissions will be reduced by technology that’s yet to be developed, and this is the tech we desperately need. The damage function is one of the inputs to modelling the “social cost of carbon”, a measure policymakers use to gauge whether investments to reduce climate change are worthwhile. Different methodologies produce wildly different answers. In 2022 America’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed revising up its estimate of the social cost of carbon from $51 to $190. Messrs Känzig’s and Bilal’s calculations produce a figure more than five times higher, at $1,056 a ton of carbon-dioxide equivalent. Thus they calculate that it would be worthwhile for America to pursue radical decarbonization even if no other country joined in. #climatechange #climateeconomics #climatetech

I’m struck by the overwhelmingly positive response to the Biden-Harris administration’s new principles for voluntary carbon markets. While this is a significant step forward, we must acknowledge the need for continuous improvement. The focus on robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is critical. However, I think we need to aspire for more. In my gut I feel that additionality should be dynamically calculated across all methodologies and registries, adapting in near real-time. Project developers need to recognize that the primary function of offsets projects is not to be a cash cow, but rather to address greenhouse gases; the additionality discount should be actively adjusted to reflect true impact. Voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) play a crucial role in our long-term climate strategy. Yet, they are inherently imperfect and require constant recalibration. Until very recently the technology simply wasn't ready to facilitate that, I believe that now it is. Additionality changes with each new project and every ton of CO2e addressed. My belief in VCMs is strong enough that I’ve spent over a year interviewing thought leaders, compiling resources, and creating content on this topic. However, at the end of the day, we need to address the root issue: pricing emissions to resolve the greenhouse gas externality. Repetition might be tedious, but the GHG externality has been my “Roman Empire” of climate focus for years. Consider if it's yours too. Stephan Herrmann and Felix Fischer's startup, Reverion, just raised $62M in Series A funding, with a $100M order backlog for their carbon-negative power plant. Reverion uses biogas—agricultural waste like manure and food scraps—to generate power, making it 80% more efficient than traditional plants. By integrating hydrogen fuel cells and a unique system design, the plant captures CO2, turning it into a liquified form that can be used or sequestered, making the process carbon negative. For a long time, there has been a Series B funding gap for climate founders that has stopped climate technology solutions from maturing. At Giant, we invest both early stage (pre-seed and seed) and at Series B - funding and supporting the most ambitious climate tech companies so they can have the impact they have set out to achieve. Recently we co-led Arbol's $60 million Series B round, enabling the team to scale their parametric insurance solution, modernising the insurance market for a world increasingly dominated by climate risk. We also invested in Agreena's Series B, scaling regenerative agriculture in Europe, having led the investment in Agreena at seed stage. Climate-tech funding is increasing (as a percentage of overall venture funding), but there still remains a gap for early growth stage climate-tech companies. Getting a job in climate is tough, particularly if you are switching industries! I think one of the best approaches is to show your horsepower by solving problems that companies are facing. One of the best examples of this approach that I have seen is the brand audit that Art Lapinsch 🔋🌳🛡️did for Lilac Solutions. I am not a brand expert, but Art's work looks and feels a lot like the work product from major brand & marketing agencies that I paid tens of thousands of dollars for at prior jobs. I particularly loved how Art shows his skills and expertise. - Clear frameworks to guide his work - Careful and thorough analysis - Concise recommendations - Well developed execution plan Well done!! Amazing job!! If you are looking for a job in climate, try this same approach. 1️⃣ Identify a company and role that interests you 2️⃣ Deeply research the company, and come up with a perspective about what is working and what needs improvement 3️⃣ Draft and publish a work product that showcases your knowledge and expertise to help the company achieve its goals 4️⃣ Distribute your work on social media, and (most importantly) email your work to the company and others in the sector with the goal of starting a conversation This is quite a bit of work, but companies (particularly startups) want / need help. So, share your passions, skills, and experience!

We are glad to welcome team number 14 in our Climate Founders portfolio: Hula Earth! 🎉 🌍 💚 The climate crisis and biodiversity loss are described as sibling crisis with strong interdependencies. Therefore we decided to jump into biodiversity topics and start with the foundational layer: proprietary data. As biodiversity is incredible complex, the first steps to take action are about understanding nature by collecting data to an extend never seen before and a proper analysis of this data. This will help to take action, avoiding negative measures in the supply chains for agriculture related companies and to funnel investments in restoration and nature positive measures. Think about food companies, fashion companies, cosmetics companies and many more. They are strongly depended on mother nature's output. More than half of the global GDP depends on nature. $44 trillion economic value. Those companies have a strong motivation to invest in a good relationship and health of their by far most important supplier and they already start to invest. Hula is here to accelerate that. Combined with political actions like the European Nature Restoration Law to restore 20% of degraded land & sea by 2030 and similar laws in UK and other countries we currently create a chance for nature and biodiversity to recover partly. But we probably don't have many chances to do it right, as time and money are limiting factors, therefore a good understanding of what we do and how we funnel money will be crucial to succeed. Hula Earth found a fantastic mix between accuracy with their BioT-Sensors and scalability with satellite data. This combination can be able to create the data foundation we need, as fast as possible in high quality. Thank you Florian Geiser & David Schmider for your trust! The facts might not be news for climate enthusiasts, but they are sobering. *Did you know that excess rainfall, often caused by warmer air, is a result of the air holding more water vapor at higher temperatures? The relationship between temperature and water vapor was described back in 1834 in the Clausius Clapeyron law. It's not a linear progression; at 1C warming, the air can hold 7% more water vapor, increasing further with each degree. Brace for wetter times ahead, especially up North! *The current geological period, "the holocene," is an exceptionally long interglacial due to a unique orbital configuration. Humanity could enjoy a stable climate for tens of thousands of years if we don't disrupt it - but we are. The irony and tragedy of this situation are evident. Congratulations Seqana!! Progress in the area of soil carbon measurement and verification is both very challenging but also key to establish soil carbon sequestration at the core of value creation in agriculture - which in return would pave the way to make a significant contribution to global greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere. Cutting measurement costs by up to 50% meeting latest standards means to overcome one of the biggest hurdles for adoption. ".....the climate finance gap cannot be filled without drastic increases in private capital, which some estimates suggest will need to account for at least  $2.61 trillion per year (WRI)" The VCM (voluntary carbon market) amounted to a bit over $2bn (0.08% of the capital needed). Even if corporate offsetting grew 20x it would still be a tiny fraction of the total need for investment in climate action. And please let me remind you, the nature based solutions portion of the VCM delivers many more benefits than just carbon: water security, food security, biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, livelihood and culture. Each of these ecosystem services are each extremely valuable in their own right (we just happen to be terrible at pricing them!). We can.....no....we must grow the NBS portion of carbon markets 100x (that will then provide 10% of the total needed. Remember, a large portion of emissions (close to 30%) comes from degradation and deforestation - stopping this is more important than reducing emissions from a factory. And when it comes to emissions from human activity, just because you outsource the cleaning of your office to a cleaning firm, it does not mean there is no cleaning going on. It means that there is efficiency in the system. Economic activity will always have some emissions (a lot of emissions, for some sectors for decades to come, actually). We have specialist firms, which deliver climate action, at scale, to compensate, at planetary level.

So far, it seems, these lower-tech companies have been able to scale quickly. Vaulted Deep, for instance, launched at the end of August last year and has already delivered more than 2,400 tons of carbon removal.
