#EmpfehlungderRedaktion: Die Redaktion empfiehlt den Beitrag "Establishment of reliable relative price predictions for high-strength steel members“ von Ir. Loris Saufnay und Ass. Prof. Jean-François Demonceau (beide University of Liège, Urban & Environmental Engineering Department) Sie finden den Beitrag (in englischer Sprache) in der neuen Ausgabe der Zeitschrift „Steel Construction“ 3/2024: https://lnkd.in/eFPxeDRG In recent years, significant improvements in steel structures have increased yield strength and reduced structural weight. However, the manufacturing costs rise with yield strength due to more demanding production techniques and higher alloy content. This makes designers and engineers hesitant to use high-strength steels, as their economic benefits are unclear. Determining reliable relative prices is essential to demonstrate these benefits. Few studies address this, so this article aims to establish price-strength relationships for different section types to help practitioners choose cost-effective steel grades. Using existing price lists, it identifies key factors that influence prices and economic advantages. #SteelStructures #CostAnalysis #MaterialScience Weitere Beiträge in dieser Ausgabe: • Damping approaches in nonlinear seismic time history analysis for large mobile equipment with uplift (Dipl.-Ing. Mirjam Kloos, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hamid Sadegh-Azar) • Lateral torsional buckling of I-section simply supported beams with stepped height (Dr. Duy Khanh Trinh, Dr. Dinh Hoa Nguyen, Assoc. Prof. Hung Cuong Bui, MSc. Minh Tuyen Nguyen) • Snow loads on multi-span roofs (Dr.-Ing. Ina Pertermann, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ramgopal Puthli) • Slip-resistant connections subjected to freeze-thaw cycles (Alfonso Fuente-García, Prof. Miguel Ángel Serrano-López, Carlos López-Colina, Fernando López-Gayarre) - #OpenAccess Fig.: Determination of realistic grade extras for future emerging section grades (source: Saufnay/Demonceau)

“Never judge a book by it's cover” Most people are probably familiar with this quote, but it is often much more difficult to put it into practice. Because we all have experiences and prejudices that sometimes lead us to make hasty judgments. The scenario from Kenan Aggül post for example: Do we confuse directness with unfriendliness? What our philosophy at #Nexwave is: Approach everyone with an open mind, or at least try to. This approach creates the most beautiful constellations in our team. #Openness #Nojudging #Stayopen #Recruting

DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics
Flying slower for the climate: BILD quotes our institute's director Dr. Björn Nagel who was interviewed as an expert for the freshly published Deutscher Bundestag's report on Technology Assessment (https://lnkd.in/etBcWk56). 80 is the percentage by which aviation's climate impact could be reduced, for instance by flying slower and/or lower. As the research of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. shows, the solution for reducing aviations climate impact drastically and fast cannot be found in single innovative technologies, or energy carriers, but instead, there are many puzzle pieces that need to be put together in the best possible way. More concretely this means, that we are looking at technologies, how to integrate them into future aircraft, at energy carriers, but also at operation, including different trajectories, flight networks, aircraft manufacturing, life-cycle, etc. The list is long. Big projects like EXACT offer relevant and comprehensive research findings and it is a sporty endeavour by many of us and our partners. The ultimate goal: drastically reducing aviation's climate impact fast, while being economical. So our globalised community can stay mobile in the future, too. That's why impact, technological and lifecycle assessment are crucial. So decision-makers in both, politics and the industry can take decisions based on data. It is good to have a clear idea, which consequences a certain measure will most likely have. This is exactly what our digital framework ALICIA is about. A framework with which we already support the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz and Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr in the „Arbeitskreis klimaneutrale Luftfahrt“. The results and our ALICIA dashboard can be checked out at the ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace (https://lnkd.in/e6ZWiFMW)! academy for humanitarian action (aha)
You can now register for the Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V. course "Introductory Workshop on Racism and Postcolonial Power Structures" via our website. ❗ Please note that the course will be in #German. Addressing the #power system of racism and its entanglements with other phenomena such as sexism, homophobia and transhostility, ableism, etc. is essential in order to shape #equal coexistence in society and reduce power #inequalities globally and locally. Development cooperation and humanitarian aid in particular are based on colonial power relations. In this workshop unit, #racism will first be defined and its mechanisms of action identified. In which structures does racism operate in the German context and globally? To do this, we will look at historical backgrounds and analyse post-colonial power systems. Where do we find these power inequalities in the working context of international #humanitarian aid and development policy? How and where is colonial continuity evident? Finally, #postcolonial and racist patterns of thought and narratives in our own work will be examined. Racism in images, in one's own language and in communication and #cooperation with partners in the Global South will be analysed in a practical way in order to find strategies for action and approaches for change. The course is targeting staff members of humanitarian organisations who are active in #project work as well as communication and #media work. You will learn reflecting on how postcolonial and #racist thought patterns are structurally anchored in the field of humanitarian #aid and in your own areas of work, questioning and examining how the findings are transferred to your own work context. Further more you will develop initial ideas for action #strategies and approaches to change in your own work context. The course is planned as 2-day training in person in German, taking place on 9 and 10 September 2024 in Bochum at the Akademie der Ruhr-Universität gGmbH and includes regular breaks. Sign up for a fee of 475€ on our aha course #website: https://lnkd.in/ecu93zaC

ESPO (European Sea Ports Organisation)
🚨 Urgent Call for a Unified European Transport Network! 🚨 Isabelle Ryckbost, Secretary General of ESPO, expresses deep concern over proposed changes to the EU budget framework that could decentralize funding and weaken the European transport perspective. With member states gaining more control over how they allocate EU funds, there’s a risk that critical infrastructure projects, like port improvements, may be overlooked in favour of national interests. The TEN-T Regulation sets important standards, but if only major cross-border projects receive direct EU funding, we might regress to fragmented regional policies from the 1980s. The Hague Program on International Cyber Security
Join us tomorrow afternoon/Thursday 16 October, 16:00-17:00 (CET), online for our next monthly seminar! This week we welcome Lennart Maschmeyer for a talk on his new book Subversion: From Covert Operations to Cyber Conflict: https://lnkd.in/e49ArzBx In Subversion, Lennart Maschmeyer provides a powerful new theory and analysis of an age-old concept. While a strategy of subversion offers great strategic promise in theory, it faces an underappreciated set of challenges that limit its strategic value in practice. Drawing from two major cases—the KGB's use of traditional subversion methods to crush the Prague Spring in 1968 and Russia's less successful use of cyberwarfare against Ukraine since 2014—Maschmeyer demonstrates both the benefits and weaknesses of the approach. While many believe that today's cyber-based subversion campaigns offer new strategic opportunities, they also come with their own challenges. Because of these disadvantages, cyber operations continue to fall short of expectations—most recently in the Russo-Ukrainian war. By showing that traditional subversion methods remain the more potent threat, Subversion forces us to reconsider our fears of the subversive potential of cyberwar. Visometry – VisionLib & Twyn
On Tuesday, 19.11.2024, @Jens Keil, Head of Customer & Product Experience at Visometry, will showcase #Twyn, our #AR quality control software, during a TechTalks webinar organized by TeDo Verlag. AR with Twyn is ideal for identifying deviations in #qualityInspection: an interactive target/actual comparison, in which the CAD model is visually superimposed on the component, enables to identify deviations immediately. In the webinar we will demonstrate how Twyn can be used to simplify the quality process. In particular, Jens will show how Twyn can be combined with measurement technologies to make quality processes more efficient. Jens will present how Twyn can be used in #welding and jig & fixture construction. No matter how large or complex the parts are, Twyn always allows quality inspectors to check, verify and ensure full geometric compliance and decide whether a subsequent measurement with a metrology system is required. This makes it much faster to determine whether rework or correction is necessary, or whether a part can be released for the next stage of production. The webinar "Inspect before you measure": More efficient #quality processes in welding and jig & fixture construction through Visual Inspection with Augmented Reality” will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, at 2pm.
