🔋 Exciting Insights from last week's Advanced Battery Power Conference There have been 2 days full of battery innovation and research at Münster with many talks, interesting speeches and high attendance numbers (>1,100). We FEV Europe GmbH had a stand at the booth and were able to hold many interesting discussions thanks to Bernd Hömberg, Prof. Martin Winter and Dirk Uwe Sauer. Here are my key findings: 📌 The most important prerequisites for EU competitiveness in the battery sector are low energy costs and industry funding. Current support from public authorities needs to be improved. In particular, EU research has made some gains in the development of solid-state battery cells, but CN consortia of cell suppliers will follow quickly 📌 Future cell formats will be mainly prismatic and cylindrical parallel, pouch with lower share 📌 Cell chemistry is evolving: LFP is further gaining traction; sodium-ion is becoming more interesting and NMC remains the choice for high energy applications. Interestingly, Solid-State technologies not have been in main focus beside the interest of the Chinese Suppliers forming a consortia… 📌 Main safety issues of last years due to thermal runaway / propagation are under control at system level, energy density vs. fast charging under discussion and cost reduction expected 📌 2nd life applications will be a niche; recycling and reprocessing will play an important role at the end of a battery product's life as customers in all sectors expect best performance 📌 Recycling is complex and not yet standardized, overcapacity is expected in the EU, but with little know-how; we can assume that the cost of battery cells will have to be increased in the future due to recycling, which will affect the attractiveness of the technologies; with the greatest negative impact on LFP, as the recycling of LFP is complex and the recycled raw materials are of low value 📌 the European gigafactories are starting operations, but initially see themselves as (fast) followers of the established suppliers => Battery production remains a challenge 📌 CO2 footprint of Li-Ion batteries is decreasing further to already <30kg CO2 / kWh with using renewable energy     Further I had the honor to lead a session for "battery application" together with Jörg Huslage with four interesting presentations 1️⃣ "Premium Platform Electric (PPE): development of superior charging performance" by Bernhard Rieger 2️⃣ "Battery-in-the cloud for modelbased adaptive control strategies" by Dr. Gerald Rämisch 3️⃣ "Safety Requirements of Stationary Energy Storage Systems for the North American Market" by Juergen Boeck 4️⃣ "Application Driven Differences in Design and Operation of Large-Scale Batteries" by Susanne Lehner 🙏 Thanks to all participants, speakers and organizers for the great event! #Battery #cell #fev

Trying to measure “Innovation Strength” of OEMs in 2023 (!), and showing the top sellers in the BEV group - published today by Handelsblatt While I cannot change the Handelsblatt material and I find it really well done I suggest to call it “Electromobility Innovation Ranking” - see below *** why. A few details are needed. ➡️ The source of the ranking is the institute lead by Stefan Bratzel, Prof. Dr.: Center of Automotive Management (CAM) ➡️ the 2023 BEV Sales ranking on the right is straightforward ➡️ the column on the left is listing GEELY as leader for 2023 ➡️ interesting how neither Tesla or BYD took the top spot on the left, and where they are placed for 2023. ➡️ the long term ranking by innovation reads: 1 Tesla 2 Volkswagen Group 3 Geely 4 BYD 5 Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) *** ➡️ Methodology for the 2023 ranking: CAM individually evaluated 512 innovations in electromobility for the past year alone that ended up in the sold product. Chinese manufacturers have developed 45 percent of these product and technology innovations and brought them to series production. Last week the 28th Automobil-Elektronik Kongress brought many exciting thoughts around SDV Challenge and potential innovations. Here below my personal highlights and thoughts: - Top OEMs like #BMW, #Renault and #Stellantis shared common concerns: HW complexity is exponentially growing, security measures are increasing with it as well - Only a fraction of today’s SW platform is standardized, making integration effort a very hard challenge. - Open-Source SW is not for free and majority of the integration and qualification effort is repeated. - There is a clear need to generate a Safe SW platform driven by clear Stack Maintainers. - Francis Chow gave a great speech about how Open Source can help to face the aforementioned challenges and talked about Red Hat effort towards Safety. - SW will define the HW: OEMs need to define early in advance what to isolate and where to place it in the E/E architecture (safety and power constraints) #Semiconductors vendors highlights: - As NXP Semiconductors we shared our view on how the SDV efforts should be spent on brand differentiation, building strong partnership and enriching the ecosystem to accelerate development time. Great presentation Ray! - Qualcomm brought the challenge of fusing Infotainment and ADAS domain, highlighting the importance to implement the “freedom from interference” principle into their design. - Infineon presented the crucial role of power semiconductors in SDV, showing how the new E/E are only possible with safe & secure computing and high speed networsk. - Another key aspect for SDV is networking capability, indeed Rosenberg highlighted new options beyond copper wiring, presenting the advantages to build vehicle networking backbone based on glass optical-fiber. Last but not least, it was very interesting to see both #AppliedEV, T-System and #AuroraLabs demos based on both NXP Semiconductors S32G and i.MX devices! It was a pleasure for me to learn from key expert and understand how much work there is still ahead of us to concretely shape the future of #SDV !

Just being part of a very interesting event: “Automotive Crisis or e-Mobility Opportunity” organized by ChargeUp Europe with interesting speakers: Peter Badik, MEP Herbert Dorfmann, MEP Susana Solís Pérez, @Moumen Hamdouch and Wolfgang Ademmer at the #EuropeanParlament. Main discussion point is the question (again): do we have enough public charging points or not in place? One interesting statement was, that in Europe we have 1/3 of countries, where public charging infrastructure is growing, 1/3 of countries with an okay amount of public charging infrastructure and 1/3 of countries, where we are lacking behind in regards of public charging infrastructure. Hello Bochum, hello CAR Center Automotive Research! ☝ It was an honour to join CAR Director Prof. Dr. Helena Wisbert and speak at their annual New Mobility World & Symposium. What a great setting to focus on the transformation of the entire automotive sector – and on how Škoda Auto is steering our course as a thriving brand. 💚 The ongoing transformation of our industry is currently again at the centre of public debate and also in the spotlight of the conference. “Electromobility – Royal Road or Dead End?” was the deliberately provocative title I chose for my keynote. Spoiler alert: Of course the long-term future is electric – simply because that powertrain uses energy most efficiently. Fighting climate change remains a top priority. My point was not to advocate for any change to European deadlines but to put the focus on the #customers. They are the ones who must buy into #emobility in order for legislative deadlines to be achieved. As a manufacturer, we are doing our part, including by launching six new fully electric models in the next several years. This includes introducing the Škoda #Elroq later this year in the popular compact SUV segment. The city SUV crossover Škoda Epiq for around 25,000 euros will follow soon after. Society and governments also need to continue doing their parts to make e-mobility more attractive, including by expanding #charging infrastructure. ⚡ The customer is our priority in this era of transition, which is why we intentionally offer a choice of powertrains: highly efficient ICE models, mild and plug-in hybrids, and a growing range of BEVs. This is core to our strategy of providing the best mobility solutions based on customer preferences. 🚘 I was grateful to hear many industry colleagues at the CAR conference also talk about customer-centricity. Volkswagen Group China Technology Company and CARIAD China are developing an electronic 👉architecture in cooperation with Xpeng. My learning from the post of Albert Pujol is, that unfortunately companies in the #automotiveindustry do not fully understand, what the potentials of #artificialintelligence could be specifically in operational areas of their businesses. Current discussions and informations are circulating almost entirely around Generative AI and LLM's. Generative AI is just one (important) part within the world of AI. Other topics like Deep Learning, Machine Learning, NLP etc. are (almost) being left out. And I agree with Albert Pujol: what are 10.000€ to 30.000€ worth compared to the potential benefits that can be created? AI-based digital assistants (Digital Colleagues) can also be a solution, which does not require a 'big investment' and can make a huge difference on improving performance. You need an example from operations? 60% cut in throughput time (cutting the the time, where no value has been added to the product) 50% cut in work-in-progress (means 'inventory' - means 'improving cash') 110% increase of value added time in production process => liquidity/cash improvement Overall result: cutting the number of extra shifts less temporarily workers needed => EBITDA-Improvement Do you need more?
