Sadly I couldn’t find anything written or said on one of the most important aspects of #ProductMarketing (PMM) - #Feedback on Product Marketing collaterals. So this is my post on behalf of all #PMMs who suffer the pain of “Vague Feedback”. Before you read ahead, I urge everyone - Please give PMMs pointed feedback. PMM is one function that hates vagueness especially when it comes to feedback. Some examples of bad feedback -  ❌This needs work. (“What work? Is it missing business benefits? Or problem? Or sentence restructuring? Or what?”) ❌The headline needs to be more punchy (“Should I add emojis?” FYI - I AM NOT A CREATIVE WRITER) ❌What is in it for customers (“Our entire product!”) ❌This looks too complex. Tone it down (🤔) ❌This looks too basic. Make it advanced (🤔) ❌Everybody provides the same solution. How are we different? (“First please create meaningful differentiators in the product. Once we have it, PMMs will happily plaster differentiator everywhere”) ❌And this is the classic since the boom of ChatGPT - “Add AI/Generative AI everywhere even though it doesn’t make sense”. (“Have you done market research? Customers want simple products to do simple things and get them through the day!”) So what are a few examples of good feedback -  ✅Instead of “This needs work”, please mention what can be done to make it work. E.g. “Although the starting is enticing where you have covered problems, business benefits can be articulated in three categories - CSAT, ROI, and Customer Support. This will increase the readability” ✅Good example - “This headline is missing business benefits around customer experience. As the target audience is in CX, let’s focus on CSAT or any other relevant metrics.” ✅Another one - “The persona for this page is technical users - Let’s add some tech differentiators that are really helpful to this persona. Or This page is for business users - Let’s talk about low-code solutions, cost-effectiveness, and project management by keeping the language simple.” I guarantee you, that if we PMMs get good pointed feedback we can close the project at lightning speed and deliver in a flash. But when we get vague comments, it demotivates us to work on that project anymore. Here's a scenario that hits a little too close to home for many PMs: Marketing sees amazing metrics 🔢 and pushes for Increased marketing spend. Product is laser-focused on user onboarding and retention, questioning the ROI. Sales has a whole different vision, prioritizing features that streamline their process. The result? Deadlock. No one agrees that resources aren't allocated, and growth 📈 stagnates. So, how do we break the cycle and build a united growth front? Enter the quantitative growth model. This isn't some magic bullet, but it's a powerful tool for aligning everyone around a holistic view of what drives growth. Few things that I have learnt in my time in product marketing is that As a product marketer, you are the CMO of your product. Period. User and buyer personas, journeys, positioning and messaging are all great, but if you cant distill the reason why the customer would want to buy from you, or what marketers call reasons to buy, everything else is useless Content dissemination is far more important than content creation. As a product marketer, you need to constantly investigate and identify new channels to reach your buyer Buying committee and your internal product champion is more important than the C Suite Who talks about you is way more important than what is being talked about. If you can get a customer or a thought leader to take a stand a for you, it makes a big difference And ground events are the best platform available for a B2B product to build a brand.

Have you ever questioned your product's "aha" moment? PMs & PMMs may set product launch metrics on a faulty "aha" and never question them later. This could mean the team is celebrating the wrong wins. Let's take a real example: Loom. The founders thought that the aha moment was fairly obvious, i.e. → When a user records a Loom video. Thus, if they were measuring time-to-first-value (TTFV), it would be calculated as: = Time between the sign-up and recording of the first Loom video. But they found an issue with their initial "aha moment." Hear it directly from Loom's co-founder, Shahed Khan: <quote> "The team thought that signing up to Loom and recording a video would be the “aha” moment to the product’s value. Data and feedback showed that it wasn’t. In actuality, people’s first videos were just a test to play around with what the product could do. From there, they began measuring adoption metrics starting from a user’s second video. Consequently, they learned that it wasn’t until someone received their first view on their Loom video that users would see the value in their product and continue using it." </ end quote> Changing the aha moment to the "first view" could dramatically affect the TTFV. This could change the perception of how the product is performing and necessitate different tactics. But this isn't just limited to Loom. In recruitment software, the aha moment won't be when recruiters post a job. It's when they receive their first valid application. In an email marketing tool, the aha moment isn't when the user dispatches an email. It's when they receive opens, orders, or referral traffic to their website. Tldr: Set the aha moment for the actual job-to-be-done, not the proxy action. -- Have you ever dealt with misleading "aha" moments?
