𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗯𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀... Perhaps afraid of public backlash from their core support, German sports executives seem to hardly exploit the potential of non-price sales promotions, such as adding accompanying concerts and fireworks to the matchday experience or introducing matchday giveaways to increase stadium attendance demand. That's certainly different in Major League Baseball (MLB), where team owners use such promotions on average for about every third match. And there's one giveaway that undoubtedly stands out: Bobbleheads. Yes, you've read this right. 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀! I love bobbleheads. I mean, who doesn't? Right? Here are five things you need to know about MLB bobbleheads. 1️⃣ I'm not an expert, but 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁: Jeffrey Cisyk and Pascal Courty, from whose empirical results I generously draw here. 2️⃣ According to Jeffrey, MLB teams, on average, 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵, and giveaways are relatively common. 3️⃣ You wonder why? Distributing giveaways (e.g., bobbleheads) 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗟𝗕 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱, on average, by about 10%. 4️⃣ Different strategies exist, and giveaways are not always guaranteed. It's common to distribute giveaways on a 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 or to fans who bought special tickets. 5️⃣ Intriguingly, with bobbleheads, 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 (𝗶.𝗲., 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆), successfully nurturing demand and, thus, making some decent profit. Why's that? While bobbleheads, which are relatively inexpensive, attract new spectators (ticketing income), both new and existing fans might arrive earlier to matches (e.g., concessions income) to grab their figure. 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝟮 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗱𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸? Last week, several websites released season ticket rankings for Bundesliga 2, and I shared some initial thoughts on this topic on Monday. Supporting the notion of imminent growth, many stories highlighted the increase in season ticket sales. For instance, Germany's leading sports magazine, kicker, noted that 13 Bundesliga 2 clubs sold more season tickets than last season, while four maintained their previous numbers. Only SV Darmstadt 1898 e.V., it stressed, distributed fewer tickets, suggesting that the club may have missed the mark. However, I believe this observation needs more context. As I mentioned in my previous post, Darmstadt still distributed the most season tickets relative to its stadium capacity—a staggering 73 percent. Considering that away team fans typically receive a maximum of ten percent of all tickets, it's clear that matchday tickets are a scarce commodity in Darmstadt. For a club with a relatively limited seat supply, such as Darmstadt, this scarcity can be problematic. Higher margins are achievable when distributing matchday tickets if seat demand is likely to exceed supply. Occasional visitors also spend more time in the stadium, and no-show rates are lower, meaning ancillary revenue is likely higher. While I am not privy to the club's ticketing strategy or whether the decline is due to reduced spectator interest, from my perspective, it makes sense that distributing fewer season tickets could be a strategic decision when finances are tight following relegation. In this regard, selling out the opening match against Fortuna Düsseldorf suggests the club is (as yet) already better off than with a new season ticket sales record. In the slide below, I rank the 18 clubs by the total number of distributed season tickets (left panel) and the relative share (right panel). Theoretically, Darmstadt has it right, and if it had been my call, the club would have distributed even fewer season tickets. Or am I missing something?

How (un)profitable are German soccer clubs?⚽️🇩🇪 The DFL has released the income statements of all 36 Bundesliga teams for the 22/23 season. Below are the numbers for the teams that played in the 1st division. Key facts: - 16 profitable - 16 lost money - 2 teams broke even (Leverkusen and Wolfsburg) Highest revenues: - Bayern: 812 mio € - Dortmund: 498 mio € - Leipzig: 396 mio € The average profit margin for Bayern is about 4%, comparable to the aerospace and defense industry (5%). The average profit margin across all public markets is 8.5%. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝟮, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁... Bundesliga 2 kicked off its 50th season last weekend with mostly packed stadiums, highlighted by a sold-out match between Köln and Hamburg. Other stadiums, including those in Berlin (48,591 distributed tickets) and Gelsenkirchen (60,534), also saw high attendance. Consequently, roughly 83 percent of all available tickets were distributed to fans, similar to last season's average. For those who follow my LinkedIn posts, this evidently strong interest in Bundesliga 2 should come as no surprise. The league attracted more fans than France's Ligue 1 last season, and this year, I anticipate ticket managers will distribute over 9 million tickets. This could theoretically position Bundesliga 2 to surpass Italy’s Serie A in attendance, though this remains a long shot. 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 A significant portion of these tickets are season passes, which are in high demand. According to Kicker, 13 out of 18 Bundesliga 2 clubs sold more season tickets than last season, while four maintained last season’s numbers. Only Darmstadt saw a decline, though the relegated club still distributed about 13,000 tickets, which translates into the largest percentage considering the club's relatively small capacity. Overall, the 18 clubs issued approximately 294,000 season tickets. Before the first match day, the ticket count was already around 5 million, representing about 51% of the available home (team) capacity. This excludes matchday tickets, which last year accounted for roughly half of all tickets. For context, these 5 million tickets are only slightly fewer than the approximately 5.4 million distributed in the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗳𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗴, 𝘁𝗼𝗼 However, the distribution of season tickets presents challenges. Season ticket holders typically miss three to four matches per season and tend to arrive later. Additionally, season tickets come with significant discounts, leading to smaller profit margins. 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 Given these factors, one might question why clubs are issuing so many season tickets, especially if the demand for seats is that high. Perhaps the demand isn't as high as it seems. Survey research suggests that a primary motivation for purchasing a season ticket is not necessarily to attend every match or to receive a discount but to support the team financially and feel involved. Therefore, attendance demand, as indicated by season ticket sales, may be overestimated. Ticket executives likely recognize this and prefer the secure income from season tickets over the potentially higher but less certain margins from matchday tickets. As we'll likely see in the next weeks, this tendency is stronger in Bundesliga, though.

How fast football goes. 🚀   That's now 2 Champions League wins in a row for Stade Brestois 29 after their historical result vs. FC Red Bull Salzburg yesterday (4-0 away) and an initial win vs. SK Sturm Graz.   With each win equalling €2.1 million income in UEFA's new distribution model, Brest are already ensured to receive at least €4.2 million for this season.   This is:   ➡️ 8.75% of their total budget (estimated at €48 million)   ➡️ 6 months worth of wage bill (estimated at €700k per month)   There are still 6 games left to play in the "league phase".   And it doesn't include potential performance bonuses related to their ranking at the end of this phase and a potential qualification for the playoffs or round of 16.   What's even more impressive is that they managed to achieve this without overinvesting in the squad.   The #1 financial risk post-European qualification is to build a squad designed for Europe and to end up with a massive player wage bill and without a renewed qualification at the end of the season.   Brest's 2024/25 summer transfer window according to Transfermarkt:   ➡️ Transfer income: €6.4 million   ➡️ Transfer spend: €(12.2) million   ➡️ Net transfer balance: €(5.8) million   That included a couple of purchases (Baldé, Doumbia, Ajorque) as well as smart loans such as Sima from Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and Faivre from AFC Bournemouth.   Knowing that they had shown a +€5.1 million positive transfer balance during the previous season.   Congrats to Grégory Lorenzi and his team for the amazing work. 👏

How we manage to do this successfully at many tennis tournaments is a matter of experience: 🔹 Focus on REVENUE-GENERATING activities The most important thing for us is that we achieve clearly defined, measurable and data-based goals with event organizers. Goal number 1: MORE REVENUE, of course. Who doesn't want that? We are passionate about this topic. And that's why our focus is always on revenue-generating activities. What do we mean by that? 1️⃣ Pricing strategy & dynamic pricing The price structure at the start of the pre-sale is the key. Dynamic pricing is an important component here. We have our own algorithm and clear criteria by which we measure when we are optimally sold out and how we adjust the pricing based on buyer behavior in order to maximize sales. 2️⃣ Campaigns: We know which campaigns work and which don't. We like to transfer the things that work well to different tournaments and test new things constantly. In both cases, the key to success depends on the ability to measure the results. Whether dynamic pricing or campaigns. Nothing is based on feeling. Data-based, measurable. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝟮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗹𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱? This Friday, Bundesliga 2 will kick off its 50th season with 1. FC Köln hosting Hamburger SV. For some, this feels like a Bundesliga match, one of many highlights this season, which will feature duels between fan favorites like Fortuna Düsseldorf, Schalke 04, and FC Kaiserslautern. Rumors suggest it might be the best Bundesliga 2 season ever. Again. Whatever that actually means. In terms of stadium attendance demand, this could be true, though, as Bundesliga 2 could surpass last year's spectator record of 8.8 million. This season, the 18 clubs can provide a total of 10.9 million seats, slightly more than last season. If utilization matches last year's level of about 83 percent, a new record is due next year. In fact, clubs could even afford to distribute slightly fewer tickets. However, there is no indication of such a potential decline in attendance demand. On the contrary, many clubs, including Greuther Fürth, Hertha BSC, and FC Magdeburg, have sold more season tickets than last year. Schalke 04 has already sold out all home matches in the first round. Additionally, Fortuna Düsseldorf’s 'Fortuna Für Alle' campaign will offer free tickets for four matches next season. It's when the athlete's commitment to #training and effort is tested by a moment and an opportunity where an easier path is a possible choice. Example - 5 am - alarm goes - it's time to go to training . Is the level of the #commitment of the athlete GREATER THAN the resistance of the moment, e.g. nice and warm in bed, too early to get up etc. Example - 4 pm - time to go to football practice but there's a new game on XBOX that the player's social group are all playing and enjoying. Is the player's commitment GREATER THAN the resistance of the moment, e.g. playing with friends, hanging out at home online. Interesting to note that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐛𝐲 +𝟐% 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓/𝟐𝟔 𝐭𝐨 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖/𝟐𝟗 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞.   The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga announced yesterday that they had surpassed the billion-Euro mark selling their domestic media rights to pay-TV giant Sky Deutschland GmbH and global sports streaming service DAZN, while ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE secured live rights for free TV.   2021/22 to 2024/25: €𝟒.𝟒 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥, €𝟏.𝟏 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧.   2025/26 to 2028/29: €𝟒.𝟒𝟖𝟒 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥, €𝟏.𝟏𝟐𝟏 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧.   The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 thus continue to have the second-strongest national media contract among all football leagues.   DFL CEO Marc Lenz said: “𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑢𝑙𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑘𝑒𝑦 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑔𝑎 2. 𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ, 𝑤𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑙𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐, 𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 - 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 36 𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑏𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑓𝑖𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒.”   In my opinion, that's a rather 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 sign in a macro context of flattening domestic media rights in European football, knowing that:   👉 The current deal with Sky and DAZN had seen a decrease from €1.16 billion to €1.1 billion AAV (average annual value).   👉 S&P Global reported in a note from September 2023 that a concern for the league was Comcast's commitment to the German market after almost a year of speculation that Sky Deutschland GmbH could be spun off.   Another positive sign is that they managed to bounce back from this decrease without going the private equity way, with various discussions and sell-side processes held over the past 3 years:   ➡️ 2021: First attempt at selling a 25% stake in the Bundesliga's international media rights - Bridgepoint, CVC and KKR all reportedly in the running.   ➡️ September 2022: Sell-side process led by Nomura and Deutsche Bank on a 20-25% stake in the Bundesliga's media rights (domestic and international).   ➡️ May 2023: Vote against plans to sell a 12.5% stake in the Bundesliga’s media rights business by the 36 clubs. ➡️ December 2023: New discussions about external investment being held for a few months before clubs closed the door again. Yet, the league successfully managed to conduct this tender ✅

Well things are spicing up in the German sports market! DAZN are suing the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga - their current major sports partner in the market, due to actions that they deem to be anti-competitive behaviour. From what I understand (in short): The Bundesliga wanted bank guarantees after DAZN placed the highest bid for the biggest share of live matches in the next rights cycle - beating out it's market competitors in Sky Deutschland GmbH by a reported €300m! DFL then asked for a bank guarantee for the deal in 24 hours following the bid - which wasn't outlined in the tender and DAZN were unable to turnaround in such short time. The DFL is saying that DAZN were behind on existing payments which caused them to put this clause forward.
