Ethical questions raised by the use of Artificial Intelligence 🤖🔍 Does AI have to be ethical, and can we even entirely fulfil this ambition? Which ethical criteria does the EU AI Act request? 🤔 The ethical implications of AI are intensely discussed, and various ethical questions arise in the context or the use of artificial intelligence. As the technology condenses and scales processes formerly made by humans, it is worth considering that it could also reproduce and amplify human faults. While AI as a technology comes with a broad range of ethical dimensions, the #AIAct in particular asks for the following ethical criteria (in a narrow sense): 🛡 data governance ⚖ (absence of unwanted) bias and non-discrimination 🔍 transparency Dominant within the AI Act are technical criteria, such as performance, #robustness or #cybersecurity. As the core of ethics is reflected in questions such as: “How should I live? How should I treat others? How should limited goods, how should burdens be distributed?” the AI Act itself can though be seen as an inherently ethical regulation. This shows e.g. ➡ in the prohibition of AI systems which influence subconsciously ➡ in the prohibition of AI systems which categorize based on protected properties ➡ generally in the AI Act’s risk-based approach, setting strict requirements to those AI systems that could potentially harm human safety or security. Based on this risk-based approach, the regulation classifies AI systems from “minimal risk” to “unacceptable risk” – with clear rules to protect citizens' rights. 💼 High-risk applications, whether in already regulated sectors such as medicine and machinery, or in risk-associated areas of use such as critical infrastructure or HR, must meet stricter requirements to ensure trustworthiness. For “limited risk” systems, transparency obligations apply, while “minimal risk” applications have no obligations. And private use of AI? Also exempt from requirements. But how do you know which risk category your AI system falls into? 🌐Teamwork and innovation: In our AI Community of Practice at TÜV Rheinland, we pool our expertise to push the boundaries of AI 📢 To drive innovation and share new knowledge, TÜV Rheinland has created the Community of Practice for Artificial Intelligence (AI CoP). This multidisciplinary and cross-functional, and self-organized working group promotes the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and application of AI principles through regular meetings and workshops. 🤝 At TÜV Rheinland, we take a dual approach to artificial intelligence: product-centric and process-centric. The use of AI ranges from internal efficiency improvements, product enhancements, to the testing and certification of future AI systems and the use of AI in testing processes. This strategy is currently reflected in some 200 projects within the AI program. Significant portion of those AI projects focus on text recognition and document analysis. The aim is to develop AI as a core competence within the Group. 💡 Last week, a hybrid meeting took place where colleagues presented updates from various areas and projects. Highlights included the recently launched AI training initiative for all employees worldwide and an update to our internal AI assistants in the TUV-GPT Hub, which now also enables the secure uploading of documents. 🤖 Looking to the future, we see the development and application of artificial intelligence as an immense opportunity to increase efficiency, open up new business areas, and make a significant contribution to safe and sustainable digitalization. 🔎 With our AI Community of Practice at TÜV Rheinland, we want to use the full potential of AI responsibly. Der Vorstand grillt! After-Work-Event bei TÜV Rheinland in Köln 🌭🔥 Diese Woche fanden sich ca. 650 Mitarbeitende voller Vorfreude zum ersten After-Work-Grillen im neueröffneten MEET&eat im Seehaus in Köln zusammen. Mit guter Laune im Gepäck trafen sie auf unsere Vorstandsmitglieder Michael Fübi, Katharina Baran und Philipp Kortüm, die Grillklassiker und Beilagen an unserem Kollegium verteilten. Unter der Hilfestellung unseres Kasino-Teams inklusive Küchenchef Miguel Contreras wurde für kulinarischen Hochgenuss und beste Unterhaltung gesorgt. Das MEET&eat beeindruckte dabei als perfekte Location – ob an den großen Tafelrunden, in gemütlichen Sitzgruppen oder am virtuellen Feuer. Es war ein Fest, das die Verbundenheit innerhalb unserer TÜV Rheinland Familie feierte und bis in die Abendstunden in fröhliche Gespräche mündete. Welcome to the new apprentices at TÜV Rheinland Group! 🎉 This week the two-day program "New at TÜV Rheinland for apprentices" took place in Cologne. It was a pleasure to welcome all participants personally. The apprentices were treated to a varied program with tours of our laboratories, including the photovoltaics lab, materials testing and the microbiology lab. They also had the opportunity to conduct interviews with key contacts in our company and gain exciting insights into the world of TÜV Rheinland.🌐 We are currently training a total of 61 talented people across Germany, 35 of them in Cologne. We are proud to support our new trainees as they embark on their careers. The annual "New at TÜV Rheinland for Trainees" welcome event is now in its fifth year and shows how important a successful start for our trainees is to us.
