What challenges prevent women from pursuing a career in the maritime industry? This question inspired us to work with the Global Maritime Forum to create a survey and corresponding analysis in the TURTLE seafarers database. Women represent less than 2% of the global seafaring workforce. Their involvement is crucial to combat the maritime industry’s increasing talent shortage. Read the report which reveals the key barriers preventing women from pursuing a career at sea, based on the insights of over 3,300 seafarers. Tackling the key challenges together is crucial to creating a more inclusive and attractive maritime industry, especially for women and people from the Global South. This work aligns with our commitment under the #AllAboardAlliance's Diversity@Sea initiative to bring about real change in the industry. The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping is dedicated to decarbonizing the shipping industry through collaboration, applied research, and regulatory reform. In this context, ammonia has been identified as a promising alternative fuel for shipping in the medium to long term, with ongoing developments in ammonia-powered marine engines and ship designs. The Center has conducted a survey asking over 2,000 maritime community members, including 1,465 seafarers, to understand perceptions and concerns around using ammonia as a marine fuel. Key takeaways from the study include: ▪ The maritime community is generally open to ammonia as a marine fuel: 58.6% of respondents are willing to sail on or work with ammonia-fuelled vessels; 24% are unsure, and 12% would not. ▪ 59% of seafarers and 57% of ashore personnel are willing to sail on or work with ammonia as a fuel. ▪ The acceptance, however, is followed by requests for relevant safety training, safety standards as well as the development of safer ship designs. ▪ Respondents emphasized the importance of knowledge of ammonia's impact on humans, the environment, firefighting, and emergency response procedures. We at TURTLE consider it very important to keep our seafarers well-informed about new technologies and the training requirements associated with them. Therefore, we were pleased to support the Center's initiative and provide our TURTLE seafarers with the opportunity to participate in the survey and share their views.
We are proud to launch our latest report entitled ‘Investigating maritime community perceptions of ammonia as a marine fuel’. To better understand the maritime community's perceptions of ammonia and key safety concerns, the Center surveyed over 2,000 respondents from across the shipping industry. The pool of respondents represented both seafaring and ashore professions and covered a range of different ages and shipping segments. The key takeaways from our report are: –– The survey found that the majority (approximately 59%) of respondents from across the maritime community were willing to sail on or work with ammonia-fueled vessels. –– Respondents' acceptance of ammonia as a marine fuel was conditional on appropriate training and certification. Top training priorities included management of ammonia leakage, emergency response and firefighting, maintenance and bunkering, and regulation. –– Respondents' primary safety concerns regarding ammonia as a marine fuel included toxicity and human health, leakage and emergency response, maintenance and storage, and air pollution. The results from the survey can support the maritime industry to develop the regulations, guidelines, and training requirements that will create a safer working environment for the maritime community working with ammonia as a fuel. Research briefing published: Alarming trends in illegal recruitment fees in the maritime industry Building on last year's corruption survey, TURTLE and the Institute for Human Rights and Business present a follow-up survey on illegal recruitment fees, which shows that despite the Maritime Labor Convention's ban, illegal fees are still demanded by one in three seafarers. In 2024, 28% of seafarers faced such demands, with fees ranging from 500 to 5,000 US dollars. Shockingly, 80% of seafarers did not report these fees, often unaware of their illegality. Key findings suggest a widespread impact across all ranks and nationalities. There needs to be a direct link between shipowners and seafarers so that seafarers have a safe gateway to their employers. As can be seen from the comments on the survey, this is also what seafarers are demanding. Read the research briefing now! #notorecruitmentfraud #worldmaritimeday #turtle #seafarerempowerment #seafarers

As proud members of the All Aboard Alliance, we're committed to increasing female representation in maritime. While women remain underrepresented in seafaring, we're making strides with an above-average share of female seafarers on our platform. Master Eda is an example of the talent and leadership that is driving our industry forward. Her journey inspires the next generation of seafarers and demonstrates the immense value of diversity on board. For shipping companies looking for top talent: The future is here, and it's diverse. Let's move towards a more inclusive maritime industry together. #MaritimeIndustry #RoleModel #Diversity #Inclusion #WomenAtSea
