#COP29 ⚠️ The COP has had too many scandals of undue influence. We urgently need to regulate conflicts of interest in climate. 🚨 Since the Paris Agreement in 2015, we haven't stopped calling for an end to undue influence from polluters and oil-rich countries. This remains a top priority, as oil and gas majors have dramatically increased their spending on misleading public relations and lobbying. 🛢️ Polluters – including the fossil fuel industry as a whole – commonly exert disproportionate, moneyed influence over policymaking that often results in diluted climate policies. This needs to change. World leaders must take a more aggressive approach to staying true to their commitments to meet the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement, and UN bodies must urgently regulate conflicts of interest. Addressing climate corruption is essential to keep climate goals alive. The integrity of the entire global climate framework is at risk if we do not take urgent steps to protect the COP process from undue influence. 🔴 The Azerbaijani COP team is using the COP 29 to strike new oil and gas deals. As part of an undercover investigation, Global Witness recorded Elnur Soltanov, the CEO of #COP29 and a board member of Azerbaijan's state fossil fuel company, promoting investment in oil and gas during COP events. The investigation reveals how Azerbaijan seems to be “using its position as host of COP29 to facilitate discussion of new fossil fuel deals at the annual UN climate conference.” Soltanov, COP chief executive and the man in the video, also sits on the supervisory board of SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s state oil company. Only last week, we published a report with the Anti-Corruption Data Collective warning that a lack of guardrails to safeguard COP from fossil fuel influence is jeopardising crucial climate goals (including the 1.5°C target). Our warnings are now facts. We need stronger integrity and anti-corruption measures at future COPs, including better criteria for selecting host countries and corporate sponsors, and stricter measures to prevent conflicts of interest from derailing climate talks. We urge the UN Climate Change to implement measures that ensure future hosts prioritize the common good over their personal agendas. #G20TakeAction: In 2014, G20 countries came together to adopt the historic High-Level Principles on Beneficial Ownership Transparency. At the time, G20’s commitment was a triumph for transparency. Now, 10 years on, Transparency International takes stock of where G20 and some of the regular guest countries stand – and what’s still needed to stop the flow of dirty money. How are they getting on? We have analysed it here ➡️ http://anticorru.pt/36t

There is a serious risk that #COP29 will be co-opted by Azerbaijani political elites, oil and gas companies, and lobbyists to promote a pro-fossil fuel industry agenda. Read the article from our Climate and Environment Lead, Brice Böhmer ⬇️ http://anticorru.pt/36p

#COP29 ⚠️ The upcoming Conference of the Parties 29 climate summit in Azerbaijan is at high risk of being co-opted to promote a pro-fossil fuel industry agenda. Our new report, published with Anti-Corruption Data Collective, warns that a lack of robust integrity and anti-corruption measures in the UNFCCC arrangements for COP has opened the door for Azerbaijan’s government to use the summit as diplomatic cover to advance its domestic oil and gas interests and secure new fossil fuel deals. ➡️ Read more: http://anticorru.pt/36i
