📊 How diverse is German science? As you will see, this question is not always easy to answer. Read here how some researchers are trying to change this in order to create a (data) basis for increasing diversity 👉 https://sohub.io/zqjj 🌏 One thing is clear: Germany is host to a large and diverse community of researchers from around the world – in fact, the country is number 2 worldwide as a destination for international academics. However, owing to the country’s history, neither the German census nor universities and funding organisations collect data on racial or ethnic diversity. But how can you increase diversity in science if you have no data about how diverse science actually is? 🤔 This fascinating article explores Germany’s deep uneasiness with collecting ethnicity data and the paradoxes that arise from that. The lack of data makes it difficult to measure changes or achievements in ethnic diversity issues – a prerequisite for policy changes. ⚖️ Find out in this article how some researchers are trying to deal with this challenge!

More support for migrant entrepreneurs: the Migrant Accelerator is promoting a more diverse German start-up scene. Find out how here 👉 https://sohub.io/0hl5 ✋🏻✋🏾 AI that better recognises different skin tones? 🏳️🌈 A health app for the LGBTQIA+ community? These are just two of the German start-ups founded by entrepreneurs with a migration background. The Start-Up Accelerator – which has been funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) since April 2024 – wants to compensate for disadvantages experienced by first- or second-generation immigrants. Mentoring as well as access to networks and funding open doors for “migrantpreneurs”, most of whom originally came to Germany to study. The approach is successful: one in five founders now has a migration background. 🙌
