REWIMET, the recycling cluster for economically strategic metals, is a network of companies, research institutions, and local authorities. The members process 5 million tons of waste annually, employ approximately 44,000 people, and generate annual revenue of 16 billion euros. Our guests had the opportunity to see firsthand how Primobius leads in sustainable battery recycling and meets stringent European sustainability standards. Why should you care about EV battery recycling? ♻️ There are many reasons to care about EV battery recycling. But there is one key main reason. As we transition to electric transportation, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) will increase, and so will increase the demand for EV batteries. And to power these batteries, we need lithium. With global demand for lithium set to more than double by 2030, Europe faces a challenge: it doesn’t have many lithium sources of its own, relying instead on imports from Argentina, Australia, and China. This reliance is risky and expensive. So, recycling EV batteries is emerging as a smart way for Europe to reduce dependency and build a more sustainable battery supply. Experts predict that by 2040, up to 60% of Europe’s battery materials could come from recycled sources. But how exactly do you recycle an EV battery? 💡 Here’s a breakdown of the main recycling methods used today: Pyrometallurgy: Batteries are heated to about 1,600°C to extract metals like cobalt and nickel. Downsides? It’s energy-intensive and not great at recovering lithium. Hydrometallurgy: Batteries are crushed, and chemicals dissolve the metals. Traditionally, strong acids are used, which are harmful and costly. But newer, safer solvents like DES are being tested to make this process more eco-friendly and affordable. Microwave-Assisted Recycling: Microwaves heat solvents quickly, reclaiming up to 87% of lithium in just 15 minutes. This method is faster, less energy-intensive, and potentially cheaper. Graphite Recovery: Batteries contain graphite for their anodes, but it’s often contaminated. Specialized processes, like those from startups like Talga Group, are emerging to purify and reuse this graphite, making recycling even more sustainable. These are five promising European startups innovating EV battery recycling: 👍 cylib (Germany): Developing an eco-friendly recycling process to recover all major battery materials efficiently. 👍 Hydrovolt (Norway): Europe’s largest facility, recovering key metals with a 12,000-tonne annual capacity. 👍 Li-Cycle (Germany): Processing lithium, nickel, and cobalt in Magdeburg, aiming to supply Europe’s EV market. 👍 tozero (Germany): Specializing in hydrometallurgy, avoiding harsh chemicals to recover lithium and graphite. 👍 Primobius (Germany): Offering modular recycling solutions capable of processing various battery chemistries efficiently. As recycling tech evolves, a circular supply chain can emerge—keeping battery production local, reducing carbon emissions from mining, and making EVs genuinely green.

🎉 A milestone for our company – the opening of our facility at Mercedes-Benz AG in Kuppenheim 🎉 After months of planning, hard work, and close collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, we did it: The first battery recycling plant in Europe based on an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process opened! 💪✨ Yesterday's opening event in Kuppenheim was a great success. We had many valuable conversations and celebrated the completion of our battery recycling facility with all the attending guests from business and politics, including the German Chancellor @olaf scholz Olaf Scholz and Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. With this facility, we help MB reaching its sustainability goals. We are thrilled that our fantastic light tower project has gone so well. It was another step towards a sustainable future and another milestone for Primobius, advancing our vision of recycling and sustainable resource use.
