Today, in celebration of #WorldMenopauseDay, I wanted to share a story of my personal menopause journey. Menopause is so stigmatized that it has taken me a couple of years to feel comfortable enough to share this. But until we talk about symptoms, we won’t break the stigma, and we can’t help women – who will all go through it – or their partners, who will experience it alongside them. I’d also like to give a BIG shout-out to my colleagues at OPEN Health for their support, especially with the shorts and bandana look! The first time… The first time that I felt such rage, I deliberately blocked the route of a man who’d driven the wrong way in the supermarket car park. I felt that he just shouldn’t get away with it. The first time that I felt such despair, I locked myself in the garden, taking the door and window keys with me. It’s hard to return when you’ve made such a fuss, and you don’t really know why. The first time that I felt such anxiety, I was in the supermarket and was trying to decide between broccoli and cauliflower - I was nearly in tears, and I was rooted to the spot trying to decide. I stood there for at least five minutes, growing more and more anxious. Really, broccoli or cauliflower. Who cares? The first time that I felt so hot, I assumed that I had COVID or was about to have a heart attack. Who knew you could get so hot, so quickly. I now wear shorts, whenever I can, and take a colorful bandana with me everywhere so I can dab my face. The first time I felt so sick, I assumed I’d eaten something I shouldn’t have – now I know that I’ll experience the equivalent of morning sickness for a couple of days every month. The first time I had such a dreadful headache, I thought I was having a migraine or even a stroke – now I know to take painkillers with me everywhere. The first time words failed me, I thought it was stress or dementia. I knew it wasn’t a cost-effectiveness accessibility curve, but I just couldn’t remember what it was called. Luckily, I’m senior enough for people to laugh it off. My particular type of word loss provides the first and last letters, and the approximate word length, but that isn’t always enough. For instance, ‘elegant’ and ‘elephant’ are certainly not interchangeable, especially when describing how someone looks before a night out 🙄 I really didn’t know what was happening to me; I thought I was having a nervous breakdown. Finally, I went to the doctor and eventually my various symptoms and issues had a name…peri-menopause🥳 I had no idea that the symptoms could be so extreme, so overwhelming, so all consuming. But I am lucky – I am now, on the very poorly named, hormone replacement therapy; it tops up rather than replaces – and my symptoms are mostly controlled. I was lucky that I had an inkling of what was wrong, I went to the doctor and got the help I needed. Lots of women don’t seek help, or don’t get help when they seek it. If you have symptoms that are new, go to see your GP.
