🌿 LLF Visit to Greater Tumucumaque and Beyond 🌿 Our team recently conducted a field visit to gain deeper insights into the vital work being carried out by Iepé - Instituto de Pesquisa e Formação Indígena and Imazon as part of the Greater Tumucumaque program. Spanning São Paulo, Santarém, and the Indigenous territories Parque do Tumcuumaque, Rio Par d’Este, and Zo’é, Belém, and Brasilia, our stay offered a view into the biodiversity of the region and the efforts of its communities and Ideflor-bio and FUNAI - Fundação Nacional do Índio to protect it. We extend our deepest gratitude to the communities, partners, and stakeholders who welcomed us so warmly. Special thanks to APITIKATXI, APIWA, AMIWA, and TEKOHARA for inviting us to their annual assemblies, sharing their knowledge, and fostering open discussions. The breathtaking landscapes we encountered, from dense rainforests to the Cerrado, serve not only as habitats for extraordinary biodiversity but as key elements in addressing the global climate crisis. 🌄 Exploring Apolobamba: A Jewel of the Andean Highlands 🌄 Our recent journey through the Madidi legacy landscape led us to the remarkable Apolobamba Natural Area of Integrated Management - home to Indigenous communities, wild vicuñas, and vital peatlands. 🦙🦅 Together with our implementing partner Wildlife Conservation Society Bolivia, we had the privilege to meet with the Indigenous authorities of the Marca Cololo de Antaquilla - Pukina Nation, @SERNAP park guards as well as the Regional Association of Vicuña Management Communities. Imagine being able to survey an entire rainforest's biodiversity from just a few drops of water… 🧬 That's exactly what we've achieved using eDNA in our latest project with Conservation International and Legacy Landscapes Fund in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains. We’re helping set new standards for biodiversity monitoring as we embark on a monitoring plan in this critically important ecosystem, home to a variety of endemic flora and fauna. Our kits couldn’t be simpler to use, enabling non-expert teams to collect data in remote areas - paving the way for more informed conservation strategies from the ground up. Our findings so far are incredibly exciting, and give promise for much more to come: 🗺️ 500+ species detected across 400,000 hectares 🐻 17 threatened IUCN Red List species identified including Asian black bears and Sunda pangolins 🦜 High bat and bird diversity complementing camera trap data 🔍 Uncovered previously unknown species populations to the area, reshaping our understanding of this vital ecosystem But this is just the beginning - and we're excited to see how this baseline data will shape long-term conservation efforts and investment decisions over the next 15 years in the Cardamom Mountains. ➡️By enabling comprehensive assessment of biodiversity outcomes, we’re helping to ensure every dollar spent drives maximum conservation impact. 🌍 15-Year Funding Partnership Announced! 🌍 Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF) is proud to announce a groundbreaking, 15-year partnership to support the Grande Tumucumaque Program! This transformative initiative, officially launched last week in Santarém (PA), will support a harmonized management between Indigenous communities and State Conservation Units in preserving one of the world's most ecologically vital regions. The Greater Tumucumaque landscape, nestled in the North of Brazil's Pará state in the Guiana Shield, is a globally significant area known for its biodiversity and vast tropical forests. Alongside other protected territories, it forms the largest continuous expanse of tropical forest on the planet, providing refuge for countless endangered species. Through this partnership, LLF has joined forces with Nia Tero, the Iepé - Instituto de Pesquisa e Formação Indígena, and Imazon to deliver $15 million in funding over 15 years. This includes a $10 million grant from LLF, complemented by $5 million from philanthropic donors, embodying our public-private funding model. 🌿 Biodiversity at its Best: Central Cardamom Mountains Teem with Rare Wildlife 🌿 Exciting news! A groundbreaking new study by Conservation International and the Cambodian government has revealed incredible biodiversity in the Central Cardamom Mountains, one of Southeast Asia’s most pristine wild landscapes. Using 147 camera traps, researchers captured images of over 100 species—including the endangered pileated gibbon and the critically endangered Sunda pangolin. These findings underscore just how precious and irreplaceable this region truly is. For Legacy Landscapes Fund, this discovery confirms the importance of preserving and protecting landscapes like Central Cardamom. Last week at #COP16, Legacy Landscapes Fund hosted an event addressing an essential aspect of conservation: the need to safeguard human rights. Conservation interventions, while vital for biodiversity, can have unintended impacts on communities, Indigenous peoples, and even rangers in the field.    As a dedicated funder of area-based conservation, LLF recognizes these challenges and is committed to addressing them through a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). LLF’s ESMS framework actively identifies, avoids, and mitigates risks to support the rights of all stakeholders, including communities and ecosystems. At last week’s event, partner organizations shared their experiences with the ESMS, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in implementing robust safeguards.    We were joined by DLA Piper, a global law firm that has developed a web-based human rights due diligence tool. This platform will assist the conservation community in identifying and mitigating human rights risks using legal tech, data analytics, and AI. With resources tailored for nonprofits, rangers, Indigenous peoples, and local communities, the tool will support a rights-respecting approach to conservation worldwide.    Thank you to DLA Piper and our partners for joining us in fostering a culture that respects both nature and human rights. Last week during #COP16, Legacy Landscapes Fund joined a panel discussion hosted by African Parks on the Verifiable Nature Unit (VNU), a pilot initiative aiming to scale outcomes-based conservation funding across 1.4 million hectares of African landscapes. LLF’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Director, Ilka Herbinger, shared insights on the importance of verifiable outcomes in mobilizing funds from the philanthropic, corporate, and public sectors and stressed the importance of also considering the social impacts of conservation.    The VNU framework aims to develop a structured "currency for nature" to advance conservation as an economic activity, providing diverse stakeholders with measurable conservation results. Throughout #COP16, one message has come through loud and clear: biodiversity funding must be programmatic and long-term. Short-term or "stop-and-go" funding disrupts implementation, leading to setbacks in biodiversity protection and eroding the trust and stability that local communities rely on. Consistent, long-term funding is critical to ensure that conservation initiatives can adapt, grow, and create positive impacts over time.    Today, we shared a stage with our comrades in durable conservation finance – Enduring Earth. Stefanie Lang and Jennifer Morris were center stage to present the Legacy Landscapes Fund and Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) models and talk about how they create mutual support and synergies on the ground.      With so many monumental problems discussed during COP, it was refreshing to hear positive perspectives from three countries receiving funding from both LLF and PFP. Indigenous Peoples are guardians of some of the world’s healthiest forests. They’re providing an invaluable service to the world by protecting these areas from mining, logging and other threats. But conservation costs money.  By putting biodiversity finance directly in the hands of Indigenous Peoples, this new initiative from Legacy Landscapes Fund will help ensure these communities have the resources they need to continue guarding the world’s forests.
