  • How does one analyze profitability accurately in a diversified, R&D-intensive biotech company? And what does one need it for?   These were the main questions answered by Joachim Esser, Head of Global Business Controlling & Commercial Excellence at QIAGEN, in last week’s lecture of our bachelor course in cost accounting. Our guest did a phenomenal job of explaining the importance of key concepts of profitability analysis that our students have been learning throughout the semester. And by visualizing the profitability analysis process at QIAGEN and linking it to QIAGEN’s underlying markets, business areas, and products, their practical application became clear.   Thank you very much for visiting us again, Joachim, and for introducing our students to this important topic and to QIAGEN. We look forward to your next visit to Münster!

  • Guest Lecture by SET Management Consulting: Maneuvering the Challenges of Scale-ups and Implementing an Effective Performance Management   Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Theresa Humpe, Sarah Markic, and Robin Wershoven from SET, who presented an interesting project from their current consulting experience that aligned perfectly with the contents of our master course “Performance Management & Strategy Execution”. In an interactive format, our guests engaged our students in a lively discussion centering around role responsibilities, suitable performance measures, and the impact of corporate culture on the performance management system.   Once again, we are happy that our guests from SET have concluded this year’s course and want to thank you for your ongoing engagement at our institute! We wish everyone a merry Christmas and our students good luck with the upcoming exams!

After three months of theoretical insights, we are now adding some serious practical spice: Our "Learning from Leaders" lecture series introduces the participants of our Onboarding module in business, a fundamental element of the Universität Münster's new Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, to executives from industry leaders in their respective fields. This year, Dieter Kahling, Alexandra Wessely, and Lennart Werner from Henkel not only provided use cases, but also linked them with core theoretical concepts our students had already learned about from my accounting colleague Martin Artz. That 'Team Henkel' honored each correct answer by the students with a popular giveaway didn't hurt the popularity of the lecture! ;-) The Onboarding group thanks our guests for their continued involvement in and commitment to the course and our school, which means a lot to us. Can't wait to welcome you once more next winter! But before we will meet again, there is serious list of further highlights waiting for our students (and us, their professors): We look very forward for the next lectures in our "Learning from Leaders" lecture series, which feature Flaschenpost co-founder Christopher Huesmann, Accenture's Alexander Lüring, Amazon's Florian Mair, Metro's Christiane Giesen, and RWE's Michael G. Müller!

  • Third time’s a charm - and once again our guests from Henkel did a phenomenal job of introducing the new cohort of bachelor students from our completely revamped business administration program to accounting in corporate practice!   Dr. Dieter Kahling, Alexandra Wessely, and Lennart Werner engaged our new bachelor students in a highly interactive session and provided many practical examples from their daily work in controlling. By linking theoretical concepts and their implementation at Henkel to the various Henkel products, they supported our students to deepen their understanding of the accounting function for our students. Also, the products were a popular giveaway during the lecture.   Many thanks to our guests for their continued involvement in and commitment to the course and our university, it really means a lot to us! It is always a pleasure to have you here and we hope to see you again very soon! Another special thank you goes to Thorsten Hennig-Thurau and his team at the Marketing Center Münster for organizing this great course and making it the special module that it is!

  • Fireside chat at LVM Versicherung Last Tuesday, interested bachelor and master students of our Insurance Management course were invited to the headquarters of LVM Insurance Münster to get to know the company, connect with employees, and to engage in discussions about topics such as thesis projects, internships, and career entry in a relaxed atmosphere. The event kicked off with an interesting and highly relevant presentation on the launch of LVM’s newly developed pet health insurance. The presentation nicely linked the development and launch of the new insurance product to various business functions such as controlling, marketing, and HR. The fireside chat concluded with time to network and discuss career opportunities at LVM in a relaxed atmosphere over dinner and drinks.

  • With a lot going on at Spotify over the past few years – from its push into podcasts to layoffs and price increases – Martin Artz explained how these decisions have affected Spotify’s business model through its cost and revenue structures and what the rationale behind these decisions was in an interactive lecture that sparked a lively discussion with and among students.   The lecture is part of the new onboarding module of our revamped bachelor’s program in Business Administration, in which a professor from each discipline introduces our new students to the theoretical foundations of his or her field of study. And last week it was our turn to do so on behalf of the Accounting Center Münster.   Each year, the lecture is complemented by a guest talk from a leading business professional to put what the students have learned into perspective. We are already looking forward to welcoming Dr. Dieter Kahling, Corporate VP of Sustainability Finance at Henkel, in Münster in four weeks! A special thank you goes out to Thorsten Hennig-Thurau and his team at the Marketing Center Münster for organizing this special lecture series and their efforts to ensure that everything is running smoothly! Finally, we would like to wish our new bachelor students a great start to their studies here in Münster!

Exciting News from the Journal of Business Chemistry! 📢 the October issue 2024 is out! now available online at https://lnkd.in/gUGPm4R This issue (Volume 21, Issue 3, 2024) focuses on the intersection of sustainability, corporate governance, data management in the chemical industry and M&A activities in the global battery industry. The first contribution of this issue is an interview with Prof. Dr. Martin Artz. He highlights the growing integration of sustainability in corporate governance, driven by regulation and customer demand since the Paris Climate Agreement. Key challenges include defining strategy, improving education, and developing effective measurement and governance systems. We thank Prof. Artz for taking the time and sharing his view on the influence of sustainability on corporate governance. The article by Dr. Martin Kirchner, Dr. Frank Martin Petrat, Marvin Graf and Dr. Oliver M. Busch, entitled „SUScube – An innovative approach to sustainability data management from practice“, presents a novel data management system that may be of interest to those seeking new solutions in this field. Evonik Oxeno has developed a Power BI-based dashboard, called „SUScube“, with the aim of addressing inefficiencies in managing sustainability data. The aim was to meet customer expectations for reliable and credible sustainability information while enhancing internal data usability. This system, based on a certified Life Cycle Assessment model of their production sites, serves as a „single point of truth“ for sustainability data, offering an efficient, user-friendly interface. Additionally, Tim Greitemeier, Carina Albrecht, Reba Brockington, Sebastian Eggers, Lars Hansner, Niklas Karl Kamp (Director at EY-Parthenon), Dr. Dr. Hauke Simon (Partner at EY- Parthenon) and Prof. Dr. Simon Lux contributed with their article: “International M&A transaction volumes along the battery value chain: Strategic investment implications.” This study examines international value streams in the global battery industry, focusing on mergers and acquisitions to track innovation strategies across key markets. Analyzing 913 deals from 2018 to 2022, the research highlights North America as the largest contributor to deal value, especially in 2021. The study also demonstrates that product manufacturers and enablers primarily drive these value streams, underscoring their pivotal role in the industry. Please enjoy reading the third issue of this year, we are grateful for the support of all authors and reviewers for this insightful issue.
