A hotspot in biodiversity science
Info
Proudly presenting: iDiv’s new website! ✨ After months and months of working behind the scenes, it has recently (and quietly) replaced our old website, which was launched no less than nine years ago. 🫢 The relaunched website is the outcome of a thorough process to which many at iDiv contributed – a big THANK YOU to everybody involved! 💐 WHAT'S NEW? Besides new content, the new website offers several technical improvements, and better responsiveness, security, and accessibility. Check it out! ⬇️

New Nature paper published: ⚠️ The study led by The University of Manchester's Chris Knight shows how soil microbes are impacted by extreme weather events, offering new insights into the risks posed by climate change. 💡 As extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and freezes become more common due to global heating, understanding how soil microbes respond is crucial. Co-author Nico Eisenhauer, group leader at iDiv and professor at Universität Leipzig said: “Soil microbes are the functional backbones of terrestrial ecosystems. They do not only determine carbon and nutrient dynamics, they also determine plant, animal, and human health. However, these microbes are increasingly challenged by global change.” Read more about the study ⬇️

New study in Nature Ecology & Evolution questions common assumption about biodiversity ⁉️ Plant species can fulfil different functions within an ecosystem, even if they are closely related to each other. This surprising conclusion was reached by a global analysis of around 1.7 million datasets on plant communities 🌲 🌳 ☘️ from the world’s most unique vegetation database, ‘sPlot’, hosted by iDiv. The study was led by iDiv member Helge Bruelheide from Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg and Georg Hähn from Università di Bologna. 🤝 Read more about the study ⬇️
