Building on the milestones like the Aalborg Commitments (2004) introducing local targets, the Basque Declaration (2016) promoting systemic change, and the Mannheim Message (2020) calling for Local Green Deals, the Aalborg Conditions lay out the framework needed to implement this sustainable transformation! "We need a common voice because many of the challenges we face are the same as in other cities. We have to act in the short-term but make a better framework for long-term planning and the Aalborg Conditions speak to that," notes Lasse Frimand Jensen, Mayor of Aalborg and Vice President of ICLEI Europe. Cities like #ICLEIMember Wrocław 🇵🇱 are demonstrating that preparation 📒, innovation 💡 and collaboration 🤝 are the keys to resilience. In a recent article with Open Access Government, Jakub Mazur, Deputy Mayor of Wroclaw [Wroclove] and Member of ICLEI Europe’s Regional Executive Committee, shared how the city is shaping its first-ever urban food policy. This initiative aligns with the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy and reflects Wrocław’s broader goal: ensuring food security and equitable access to healthy, sustainable food – especially in moments of crisis. Wrocław’s approach mirrors the principles outlined in the Aalborg Conditions: ✅ Local governments need the enabling conditions to advance policies that lead to a climate-neutral, just, and resilient Europe. ✅ Partnerships across cities, regions, and EU frameworks are crucial to building sustainable food systems. As Mazur emphasises, "Food security is not a challenge that can be solved in isolation, which is why partnerships that involve strong cross-city cooperation, and efforts to bring food to the forefront of the policy arena, are valued at all levels." As Poland prepares to hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union starting in January 2025, the moment is ripe for cities like Wrocław to amplify their leadership.
