From #ERC2024 Best Poster Winner Sara de Sousa: In preparation for the EERA ERC poster competition, I watched several YouTube videos on #betterposters (https://ow.ly/oawh50U46gG and https://ow.ly/xnsJ50U46gM) and decided to adapt the traditional academic layout to authentically represent my arts-based participatory inquiry. Using Canva instead of Powerpoint, I added eye-catching and emotive graphics to draw attention to the counter stories of my participants. The hardest task was refining 252 pages of writing to a one-page visual summary. The skill of creating a poster is in the use of space to convey key messages from your findings without losing impact – don’t underestimate how long this takes(!) I wanted to ensure my methods were portrayed visually, so I used images of the non-stick collages and photos created by my participants. This helped bring the study to life on the poster. It has been a steep learning curve, and one I intend to build upon in future, as I enjoyed the process of poster creation and the rich conversations it generated in the exhibition hall. Winning was the cherry on the cake, and I am grateful to the panel for awarding me the prize. I look forward to seeing everyone’s posters in Belgrade next year!
