When we think of UNESCO, we tend to think about ancient historical sites or precious natural lands. However, this time UNESCO made a decision that can be considered a milestone for producers, artists and organisers. A wide range of cultural customs and practices are protected under the organisation’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. After the initial application in November 2022, techno, along with five other German traditions, has recently been placed under UNESCO's protection. UNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage as mainly the forms of expression that are cultural and directly related to human creativity and traditions, which are passed down through the generations and are in a state of never-ending evolution. This includes customs, knowledge, abilities, and performing arts like theater, dance, and music which are meant to be preserved and kept alive. "Kraftwerk, African-American DJs, and producers like Underground Resistance from Detroit, made a significant contribution to the creation and spread of techno culture," stated Lutz Leichsenring who is an executive board member in Clubcommision. He continued by saying, ‘The decision will help us ensure that club culture is recognised as a valuable sector worthy of protection and support’. As a Berlin-based company, we are extremely happy to hear these news as Berlin’s Techno has nourishes and inspires us everyday doing our work, as it does many other people. 🖤

Happy International Women’s Day from the DJOID Family! We are very happy to be living in a time when we see more and more female and queer DJs, musicians, producers, and music industry professionals every day. We want and appreciate a gender-equal music industry, not only today, but every day of the year. Over the years the number of female and diverse artists, DJs, and producers increased considerably. We have female DJs who have become some of the biggest names in the industry now. However, despite the increased interest and the success of female/diverse DJs, musicians, and producers, there is still a long way to go in the music industry. Here are some statistics for us to think about; In 2023, DJMag’s Annual Top 100 DJs list featured only 3 female DJs in the top 30. In 9th place was Peggy Gou, number 18 was Charlotte de Witte and number 30 was Amelie Lens. According to the IMS Business Report 2023, the bookings of the top 100 male DJs grew 1.7 times faster than their female counterparts. What are your thoughts on these? Do you think the industry is evolving or is going into more of a vicious cycle? The rise of female DJs is about more than just tearing down obstacles and achieving gender equality. It is also about the responsibility of appreciating and honoring the enormous creativity and talent that women bring to the music business. Happy March 8th! DJOID
