Let’s go Salen into the future! #Electrosnythesis, that is, converting substrates to useful products with the help of electricity, benefits from the introduction of #electrocatalysts that mediate between the electrode and the species in solution. Metal #salens, modular in their design and thus easily tunable, have been found useful to avoid high overpotentials and to increase the turnover numbers. Yet, using them as solution species makes downstream separation more complicated, costly, and time consuming. Zach N. and Shelley Minteer (University of Utah) highlight key advancements in the immobilization of metal salens for tackling this issue. Using different electrode immobilization techniques, such as polymerization and covalent attachment, straightforward separation and recycling of catalysts is made possible. With key examples ranging from water oxidation over CO2 reduction to organic electrosynthesis, this Review aims to help finding other applications, stimulate research into flow reactors and syntheses at scale. Our Pick of the Week, out #OpenAccess in #ChemElectroChem as part of their Anniversary Special Collection: "Utility of Immobilized Metal Salens as Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells and Organic Electrosynthesis" https://ow.ly/E5FV50Utuln

Turning #smoke into data? E-Cigarettes, while enormously popular especially among teenagers and young adults, are still under investigation for a clearer picture of their health implications. Characterizing the full spectrum of compounds in #cigarette emissions has been challenging due to the limitations of conventional analysis methods. Alex Yong-Qi Gao, Natalia Gasilova, Jan-Christoph Wolf (Plasmion), Luc Patiny, Menin Laure and Maria Pavlou (EPFL) employed concentric dielectric barrier discharge ionization #MassSpectrometry to perform a rapid, untargeted puff-by-puff analysis of (e-)cigarette emissions. This innovative approach allowed them to identify 225 compounds across various chemical classes, including acids, carbonyls, and aromatic cycles. In just two five-minute runs, a wealth of data could be generated which the team analyzed, revealing a broader spectrum of compounds and highlighting differences between liquids from different brands. This method not only enhances our understanding of the #chemical landscape of e-cigarettes but also sets a new standard for rapid and comprehensive analysis in this field. Our Pick of the Week, published #OpenAccess in #AnalysisSensing: "Rapid Untargeted Puff-by-Puff Analysis of (Electronic) Cigarette Emissions by Concentric Dielectric Barrier Discharge Ionisation Mass Spectrometry" https://ow.ly/6yCJ50Up33T #ECigarette #Smoking #Chemistry

💫 Thrilled to share my cover for Chemistry Europe featuring fingerprints as a central metaphorical idea! *second in a row, wow😅 This cover accompanies a fascinating study on decoding the stereochemistry of a cyclic lipodepsipeptide of bacterial origin. By matching its NMR proton–carbon spectral fingerprint to a synthetic library of analogues with defined stereochemistry, the researchers developed a smart and efficient approach. Breaking the lipopeptide macrocycle via selective ester bond hydrolysis limits the required synthetic effort to a library of linear lipopeptides, making the method both resourceful and widely applicable. Huge congratulations to N. Geudens, J. C. Martins, and their team from Ghent University for this groundbreaking work! Thank you Essam Hebishy for sharing this! We also have a #Sound #Science journal in our Chemistry Europe portfolio: #chemistryselect https://lnkd.in/eHjMw6Me
What is a Sound Science Journal? #Sound #Science journals publish research on common but important issues, with a focus on quality rather than perceived novelty or (citation) impact. #Examples of research outputs include replication studies, incremental results, datasets, and case studies, as well as confirmatory research and negative results. Sound science journals typically prioritize the scientific validity and technical accuracy of research over its novelty or potential impact. Here are some key requirements: 📌 Scientific Validity: The research must address a significant question using appropriate methods and analyses. It should follow community-agreed standards relevant to the field. 📌 Reproducibility: Results must be reproducible, with sufficient replication to ensure observations are not due to chance. 📌 Ethical Soundness: Research must adhere to ethical guidelines and standards. 📌 Technical Accuracy: Data and methodologies should be accurately reported, with clear and detailed descriptions. 📌 Transparency: Full disclosure of methodologies, data, and potential conflicts of interest is essential. 📣 Sound science journals advance collective knowledge by making sure there is a home for every paper that is scientifically valid, technically accurate, reproducible, and ethically sound, so that no valuable research gets lost. These journals often accept studies that may not be groundbreaking but contribute valuable data, confirmatory results, or negative findings, ensuring that all scientifically sound research is available to the community. Check out some of these Journals in our Wiley Forward Series Open Access Portfolio. https://lnkd.in/gbdSSr3a https://lnkd.in/ggwr9xxJ
