Condia (formerly, Bendada.com) just published a piece I had initially titled, "AgTech Investment in Africa is Climate-tech Investment" In brief, it's about how LPs and GPs are climate financing agri-tech startups in Africa, a sector that has historically received peanuts from venture investors over the years. Climate Tech as a market opportunity from the The World Bank’s point of view Imagine investing $1 and getting $12 back—climate adaptation isn't just an environmental imperative, it's a $2 trillion market opportunity waiting to be unlocked. 📈 The harsh reality? While extreme weather events intensify and global temperatures soar, we're severely underinvesting in our resilient future. The numbers tell a stark story: developing countries need $300 billion annually by 2030 for adaptation, yet global adaptation finance flows reached only $46 billion in 2020. Even more telling—just 1.6% of all adaptation funding comes from private investment. The gap is massive, but so is the opportunity. 🌡 📊 The Business Case Is Clear: Climate adaptation investments yield a 4:1 return, with a market projected to hit $2 trillion annually by 2026—solutions exist, but capital is lacking. 🌏 The Challenge Ahead: Developing countries need $215-387 billion annually for adaptation, but current funding falls short, emphasizing the need for developed nations to meet their $38.4 billion yearly commitment. The transition to a climate-resilient future requires unprecedented collaboration between governments, businesses, and investors. According to a research by Standard Chartered Bank, $1 of invested in this decade, will yield an average of $12 in returns. In that scenario, the business case for adaptation is becoming impossible to ignore. Current efforts to tackle #biodiversity loss, #climatechange, water scarcity, and food security are often disconnected, shows new IPBES report. I consider this paper a premature Christmas gift! The collaborative effort of a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) agriculture team as well as solar energy experts of BayWa r.e. Global r.e. provides results that should make everyone hopeful🌈: We show that the much-needed transition to #regenerativeagriculture can benefit greatly from a #solarbooster. 📢Farmer profits can double or triple during the transition to regenerative agriculture, if they also engage in Agri-PV on about 10% of the land they farm. This is a very significant finding. It is modeled for three different farm sizes in Germany. Of course, real-life results will differ farm by farm, project by project. But the order of magnitude with which revenue from solar leases & services and/ or investment boost the farm profits during the agricultural transition makes this a very attractive option to consider. The results show that there is at least a quintuple win-win-win-win-win: ✅Farmers win, obviously, from increased profits and reduced financial risk of their transition to regen Ag ✅Soil health & fertility wins, improving also drought resilience and reducing erosion risk ✅Green electricity production wins, providing carbon free power to increasing demand ✅Solar developers and investors (which can also be farmers, co-ops or communities) win as well ✅Rural communities win, if we design systems in a way that benefit rural value creation   What a great perspective for 2025 – let us roll this out!  📢   Thank you for this great collaboration Benjamin Subei, Paul Plötner Max Havermeier and #TorstenKurth of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for the agricultural modelling. Climate hazards could cut corporate earnings by up to 7% annually by 2035, finds World Economic Forum report with PIK Director Johan Rockström. One of the greatest risks to profit losses: increasing heatwaves. Without resilience strategies, extreme weather events like heatwaves will cause companies significant profit losses by 2035, shows the report "Business on the Edge: Building Industry Resilience to Climate Hazards". Climate change as an investment opportunity? Yes, of course. Next to our transition investments (renewables, storage, etc) we need to build a world of climate resilient settlements, infrastructure, supply chains. And we need to do it now! Those who think ahead will be able to profit from an immense opportunity. Those who don't understand that, will be hit by the risks. In a new report, the OECD - OCDE discusses "adaptation investments" in a detailed new report. It is directed primarily at governments, but I would argue that where governments look, markets follow. Highlights from COP29 Azerbaijan 21 November - Race to Resilience in Action Faster Together Now approaching the end of its third year, the RtR campaign is making steady progress, with 41 partners in 164 countries working to fulfil their commitments. Collectively, they have reached a significant milestone by designing and starting to implement action plans for protecting the lives and livelihoods of more than 2 billion people most vulnerable to the climate crisis. Driven by the shared vision of a more resilient future, these partners are committed to scaling up their efforts, with the ambitious pledge to increase the resilience of 3.26 billion people by 2030.
