1.
Thema Mundi 04:10
The sky and the earth are connected Wisdom from above A sign in the sky is an omen Meant for the earth Oh Falling further Sinking deeper Falling further Into the ether The stars in their place To rule over fates Though we obey We fall just the same The road rises to meet you A moment before we are returned Return
2.
Capricorn 04:07
Came of lowly birth into a world with nothing at all A life of crawling 'round in the dirt but destined for more Warrior you'll prevail by the path you travel alone So take another turn of the wheel, there's nothing to lose Called forth On that lonely road March on Further into the unknown Journey through the desert at the edge of all that is known Walk into the shadow of death and take your reward Called forth On that lonely road March on Further into the unknown Held by divine birthright Bathe in golden light When the stars align A bridge will rise Lights will show the way In the pale moonlight Bow down Comes a king who wears no crown How now See the fool lay his life down Lord knows I tried But trying is not enough Somewhere I died No, no, no Oh well
3.
Novus Homo 03:41
Come up into present time Reborn in a racing mind For all my many lives before This one helped me to find myself When my soul was tired And I felt like dying I found a host to hide in 'Coz you are older than you know Now I understand my lesson Things will be so different this time When my soul was tired And I felt like dying I found a host to hide in 'Coz I am older than you know And I can show you how to learn To be alone Already the world's become terrifying So how can I wait while it falls to ruin, no What would it take to save from dying Knowing how to know wont come for nothing, no When your soul is tired And you feel like dying Find a host to hide in We are older than we know And I can show you how to learn I can show you this whole world I can show you the universe Oh
4.
Came from the heavens Falling fast to oblivion Fear falls away Hastens the day The pieces burn away Lessens the pain Spiral further in time Human move to your final form No, no, no You wont feel anymore Have a good journey home Mercy for all the helpless ones I know the mind is a prison Pay the toll for your mortal soul I've found a gate to heaven Feeble calls as the gurney rolls We know that hell is no different Take your bow as the curtain falls All our sins are forgiven Fly me back to the sun I ought to know by now Untethered from everyone I ought to know by now I found my way too soon To heaven's gate Too soon
5.
Mirrorpool 03:16
Το νερό Θα σε καθαρίσει Ψυχή μου O' emptiness A pale reflection Water into Earth makes mud Makes murder O' emptiness The skies themselves fall down Silence from above Curse the stars and beg for freedom Dive into the mirror pool
6.
In the darkest reach Where nothing grows Where the spirits keep you safe below When you stir from sleep Slumbering in your throne Ruler of a kingdom of ash and bone Wish on a star and watch it fall Those elder gods have been dead so long In a fevered dream Heard murmured words To receive the wisdom of the holy ghost Take the sword of spirit and strike them down Ring the bell, awaken Return his crown Wish on a star and watch it fall Those elder gods have been dead so long Have I always been cruel Did I lie Who on earth would care at all if I live or die
7.
Still waters Pale moon Tidal overture Of planetary rule Cancer, rise anew Oh! Keeper of memory Surrender, turn your new key Erasing your own history Descending back through the gate Oh no Fuck If fortune wears her frown Neither the brave or the fool are remembered for long If wisdom could fit in the palm of your hand Divining the future while babylon burn Why pray for peace when the damage is done War in the east while the west sleeps safe and sound If time is a circle then it's just begun The future, the present, the past are now as one Bathe in the tide Let it wash over you
8.
Centuries gazing at the stars Waiting for a sign from above We know many souls have withered in the dark In the name of the onward march Empire burning The wheel is turning We know we are doomed to live alone So come down now Don't look down from above So come down now We all must fall to earth Everything that is and ever was Staged upon the pale blue dot We are wandering forever in the dark 'Til our world is coming apart History is written Thousands forgotten We know we are doomed to the unknown Breathe slow Come home When we falter we are shown a glimpse of the divine We have stardust in our bones We are fallen ones We live but we are doomed to die alone
9.
The Law 03:58
Lord, I've been a fool Now I see it Clear as day revealed How much I wasted I know what I know But now I see it was all for nothing A quarter to midnight Now it's coming Don't call it defeat I'll drop this body I know what I know But I found peace knowing where I'm going I know what I know But I found release in my own unknowing Time will heal all your wounds And time will dispel all of your illusions Here for but a moment before we return to the stars Every man and woman is a star who knows we return to nothing This is the law of the universe

about

Since we last heard from Dawnwalker with 2022’s brooding House of Sand, they’ve sought many new avenues of inspiration. “I visited with astrologers, tarot readers, psychics and spiritual healers,” says bandleader Mark Norgate. “I took up a regular meditation practice and read up on all manner of esoteric spirituality. I wanted to explore the outer reaches of human thought on the nature of our universe in a way I never had before.”

Throughout The Unknowing references abound to ancient astrologers and the early days of the sciences all the way up to new age gurus, L. Ron Hubbard, Alastair Crowley and the Heaven’s Gate UFO cult. Each song is like a story centred around those who claim to have unlocked some hidden knowledge of the universe. The result creates a kind of tableau of human knowledge - superstitions, sciences and magical belief systems alike. Lead single “Cancer (Rising)” is a galaxy-brained moment of realisation of one’s own place in the cosmos. “Capricorn” appears to be about a knight who believes he has a great destiny written in the stars, only to find that a cruel twist of fate awaits. “Fall to Earth” is a powerful ballad about an astronaut who watches the earth from space knowing they cannot survive their return home. There is a sense of destiny and cosmic futility all at once, two sides of the same coin - a knowing and an unknowing.

Musically, the album treads new ground for Dawnwalker and not least of all because of their cast of talented new collaborators. On vocals is Sofia Sourianou (Deathbloom, Lurein) and on bass Luke Fabian (ex-Pupil Slicer) who play pivotal roles in the new direction. There is a conscious move away from post-metal towards something more prog, spacey and ambient. There is an overall de-emphasis on guitars, which allows space for more keyboards, synths and atmospherics than ever before. Its organic production was primarily captured by Stanley Gravett at London’s analogue-focused Holy Mountain Studios. It was then mixed for a natural, warm presentation by Scott McLean (Healthyliving, Ashenspire) in Edinburgh. By eschewing modern heavy metal production techniques, the album may recall the cosmic prog and krautrock of the 70s albeit pitted against a modern rock songwriter’s sensibilities. There are certainly references points one could easily name, but ultimately The Unknowing is a concoction of Dawnwalker’s own creation.
