We are rapidly approaching the deadline for the #ParisAgreement, yet progress remains far from sufficient. This year's COP will be crucial for shaping future discussions on #climateaction, particularly in the realm of finance. Especially the topics such as new climate finance goals, the current international financial framework, and strategies for designing Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDC) that facilitate investment in climate-resilient infrastructure. Having recently participated in the Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD), I had the privilege to shared Indonesia's perspective on how the Ministry of Finance can play a proactive role in supporting the development, financing, and implementation of NDCs. It is disheartening to note that only 29% of respondents in a 2021 survey conducted by Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action reported actively contributing to NDC development in their countries. I shared the stage with other prominent speakers including, HE Svenja Schulze, HE Marina Silva (Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Brazil), Amar Bhattacharya and Warren Evans. The discussion at the PCD also brought to light contrasting views on the responsibilities of developed versus developing countries in financing climate action. While emerging nations advocate for greater support from historical emitters, developed countries hold a different perspective on this crucial issue. I am proud to stand in solidarity with other developing nations in advocating for a fair and inclusive approach to designing the new climate finance goals. It is imperative that the specific needs and priorities of developing countries, such as the imperative for a #justtransition, are taken into consideration in these discussions. Addressing the $1.6 trillion investment gap required to shift from brown to green energy is essential for achieving sustainable growth and climate resilience. Indonesia is committed to leading by example in mobilizing transition financing through initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and the Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) Country Platform. Additionally, we are actively updating our Indonesia Taxonomy for Sustainable Financing and supporting the development of the ASEAN Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance Version 2 to promote transition activities. On a global scale, Indonesia is playing a significant role in various climate forums as the Co-chair of CFMCA and actively participating in the #G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group and G20 TF-CLIMA. As we navigate the complex challenges of #climatefinance, cooperation and collaboration among nations will be paramount in achieving our shared #climategoals.

Second round of #hearings for designate-commissioners has concluded. I've closely followed the crosscutting cluster of the ecological transition. Here's a wrap-up of key insights from three crucial hearings: 🌍 Wopke Hoekstra - Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Hoekstra emphasized the need for a fair taxation system for super-rich capitals, expressing willingness to bring this to a G7 level. This shows a strong understanding of inequalities and unfair wealth distribution that needs addressing. Also Ribera appeared on the same page. If this is shared among the new Commission I strongly belieave is thanks to the recent #taxtherich proposal that Brazil has submited within G20. He seemed open to social leasing schemes for #EVs (similar to those in France) and even in other areas. Hoekstra also declared he would look into specific subsidies for EU-produced EV schemes. A bold commitment: No more #EU money for #FossilFuels subsidies by Member States. This includes a need to ensure indirect subsidies on frameworks relying on fossil fuels are also addressed. 🔵 Stéphane Séjourné - Industry and Single Market Séjourné stated, "Simplification will be key, but this does not mean deregulation." It remains to be seen how Macron's right-hand man will deliver on this commitment. He approached issues from a market-based perspective but made some notable statements in support of the transition to EVs: - There's predictability: it won't be a jump in the dark. - If sales go up, it won't be a problem for the sector, so the priority is to boost demand 🌿 Teresa Ribera - Clean, Just and Competitive Transition Ribera made progress on #fossilfuels compared to other hearings, stating, "If our economy depends on fossil fuels that we do not produce, we won't be competitive.". She mentioned the “transitioning away” formula resulted by #COP28. Thouht, what is clear is that the Commission is not ready for a phase-out. On #nuclear, Ribera's statements is on the same page with #DanJorgensen about "no EU public funding on nuclear," indicate that nuclear energy won't have as much space as some have speculated. She also referred more specifically to State Aid regulation. Ribera showed awareness of the Jevons paradox (efficiency=lower marginal costs=demand increase=more final consumption) when asked about decoupling resource use and emissions from economic growth (GDP). She didn't close the door on this complex issue. A rare "NO" was given to an ESN MEP claiming the #GreenDeal was at fault for rising energy prices. Ribera firmly stated, "High volatility in energy prices is inarguably linked to fossil fuels." These hearings reveal a complex landscape of climate and energy policies in the EU. While some bold commitments were made, challenges remain in implementation and balancing various interests. The winning rules for Financing Net Zero - Climate Finance for Climate Action I herewith proudly present our new climate finance for climate action project with Springer-Palgrave MacMillan. The winning rules for Financing Net Zero - Climate Finance for Climate Action The global push to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 requires foremost one thing: shifting the trillions to transistion finance, carbon emission replacement and - where unavoidable - carbon emission reduction. Without structured, sector-specific financial support, achieving global climate goals of net-zero by 2050 will remain out of reach according to World Bank. Therefore now our project to fill this gap, written by financial specialists and scientists to educate the market. Transition finance presents a unique opportunity to scale sustainable solutions, but only if we address key hurdles such as, taxonomy harmonization and the creation of new energy markets, and market infrastructure that responds to global AND regional needs. S-Curve Economics CIC, a new non-profit organization dedicated to advancing understanding of the economics of the low carbon transition, goes live today with its new website, scurveeconomics.org We believe that with a better understanding of processes of change in the economy, policy and diplomacy for the transition can be targeted more effectively. Whatever political will, money, time, and effort that can be mustered will be better spent, and progress will be faster. I’m happy to be launching S-Curve with a great team: Caroline Humphries, Joe Morrisroe, and Anna Murphy. In the lively ecosystem of action on climate change, this is our niche, and we will be closely connected to others working with the same aim. Just as each new technology is a combination of components from other existing technologies, the same is true of ideas, and the same is true of organizations. We’re grateful to our friends and colleagues in the EEIST project consortium, the UK government, WRI, UCL IIPP, and many other organizations for having helped us on our journey to this point. We are looking forward to working with partners on four projects already underway, with more to come in future: -         The Economics of Energy Innovation and System Transition project (with a new policy brief out today: ‘A positive tipping cascade in power, transport and heating’)   -         Systems Mapping for Power Sector Reform in China (also part of EEIST)   -         The Breakthrough Agenda Policy Network, a new partnership forging a common vision for more effective climate change diplomacy, starting with a focus on steel and trade   -         The Coalition for Capacity on Climate Action (C3A), a World Bank initiative supporting finance ministries, in which we coordinate work on the theme of innovation. This could slow their ability to attract capital looking for sustainable investment opportunities. While taxonomies serve as a valuable foundation to guide complementary policies to promote sustainable finance, it is important to recognize that they are not a panacea. What does the Trump victory in the US mean for #climateaction globally? That's up to the rest of us to decide now. My advice: Let's fight even harder, and smarter! In another valuable contribution, Carbon Brief asked scientists. Most call for other countries and non-state actors to step in and step up. And of course they are right. It is easy to despair right now, for scientists and activists (this one included). What makes things particularly difficult is the fact that those most affected are those least #responsible. But giving up is simply not an option. Too much is at stake. For all species. Lets abuse Trump's win to turbocharge #action everywhere else. However: Important now is to REALLY step up the fight - and to realise that more of the same will not get us anywhere near our targets in the time. Particularly with Trump in the white house. One key step-up opportunity is the #border - and with it, a focus on consumption-based emissions. The Trump administration has already announced how they plan to fight with #tariffs. Let's give them that fight by adjusting for GHG. The EU has provided the groundwork with #cbam. Others can and must go further. The right implementation will strengthen developing countries as the pricing of consumption-based emissions by rich importing nations will create the mechanism needed to #finance the global transition. How can we make forest restoration investible and bankable? What is still required to make restoration an attractive business opportunity? How to overcome perceived and real barriers and what are policy incentives still needed? These are relevant and urgent questions as natural ecosystem restoration is one of the largest-scale and most cost-effective near-term opportunities for climate mitigation! To get a better understanding of the current state of play, recommending an insightful new paper by Instituto Arapyaú, highlighting the so-called "pre-competitive actions" that ought to be embraced. The report primarily focuses on #Brazil, but lessons and insights are also applicable to other countries across the entire equatorial green belt, from #Colombia to #Indonesia, from #Peru to #Tanzania, and so on. These and other countries can learn a lot from initiatives in Brazil, ranging from #agroforestry systems - such as Belterra Agroforestry - to native silviculture and large-scale #reforestation initiatives - such as re.green. The report in both Portuguese and English aims to facilitate the necessary advances in the institutional environment, from market building, governance oversight, standardization of operations, fiscal incentives, #carbon markets, payment for ecosystem services, land tenure, concessions, #finance mechanisms, social cohesion, research and development, to alignment with national climate policies, and so on. In my capacity as a Instituto Arapyaú Board member, my gratitude to constructive dialogue and insightful sessions with key leadership in the restoration universe. The report is the result of rich discussions and exchanges with representatives from, among others, Belterra Agroforestry, Assessoria Biofilica, Biomas, eB Capital, IPÊ - Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, Banco Itaú, Itaúsa, MOMBAK, Patria Investments, Rabobank Brasil, re.green, Safra, Santander Brasil, Suzano, UBS, and Vale. In line with Triodos Bank's science based target to reach net zero by 2035, we initiated a climate change engagement project with the goal to encourage companies in our Impact Equities and Bond portfolios to set science-based GHG emission targets, in line with the 1.5°C trajectory. "Our approach is two-fold. One, we focus on companies that are still in the early stages of establishing a climate change strategy. These companies can greatly improve their approach by setting targets that are science-based. Two, we focus on the highest emitters in our portfolio, as reducing emissions for this group can substantially and efficiently decrease the emission intensity of our portfolio," explain investment analysts André d'Ursel, Luc van Haaren, and Lilia Feghiu.
