  • Effect of Optimized RSSI Distance Estimation on Accuracy of RTLS System

    05/2012

This paper shows how the distance estimation based on RSSI parameter can be
optimized when our adaptive system reflecting the actual radio condition is applied.
The adaptive proposed method is evaluated in the real testbed consisted
on wireless sensors. Furthermore, we have showed the impact of the adaptive
distance estimation method on the accuracy of the localization system. For evaluation

The adaptive proposed method is evaluated in the real testbed consisted

distance estimation method on the accuracy of the localization system. For evaluation
we have implemented Multilateration and Weighted Centroid algorithm.
The results showed that adaptive method improves the distance estimation about
9% in contrast to commonly used method using pure signal strength. With the
proposed adaptive method we have observed localization error of 1.3 in office and
6.3 meters in the floor respectively.

  • Measurement of lowPAN Network Coexistence with Home Microwave Appliances in Laboratory and Home Environments

In Proceeding of BWCCA 2011 conference

Due to a low installation cost of communication
infrastructure, Low Power Wireless Area Networks (lowPAN)
presents an efficient solution for home and building automation.
The lowPANs operate in a microwave radio band that is often
shared by several home appliances. Laptops, wireless routers,
cordless phones and microwave ovens occupy the 2.4 GHz band
without any channel allocation and thus interoperability with

The lowPANs operate in a microwave radio band that is often
shared by several home appliances. Laptops, wireless routers,
cordless phones and microwave ovens occupy the 2.4 GHz band
without any channel allocation and thus interoperability with
the lowPAN systems presents a significant challenge. Therefore,
we have performed several laboratory experiments to study
the coexistence of lowPAN devices with WiFi equipped laptop,
WiFi router and microwave oven. The performance evaluation
was based on a measurement of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR)
metric. Results shows that presence of the home appliances
in the lowPAN environment significantly affects the lowPAN
communication efficiency. Furthermore, we have deployed
Zigbee based wireless network in the home environment to
study the communication performance in area perturbed by
common home radio interferences and obstacles. The lessons
learned from network deployment are also presented within
    the paper.

The doctoral thesis is focused on a design of a novel anchor free localization algorithm
for wireless sensor networks. As introduction, the incremental and concurrent anchor free
localization algorithms are presented and their performance is compared. It was found
that contemporary anchor free localization algorithms working in the concurrent manner
achieve a low localization error, but dissipate significant energy reserves. A new Boundary
Recognition Aided Localization algorithm presented in this thesis is based on an idea to
recognize the nodes placed on the boundary of network and thus reduce the number of
transmission realized during the reference nodes selection phase of the algorithm. For
the position estimation, the algorithm employs the multilateration technique that work
effectively with the low number of the reference nodes. Proposed algorithms are tested
through the simulations and validated by the real experiment with the wireless sensor
network. The novel Boundary Recognition Aided Localization algorithm is compared
with the known algorithms in terms of localization error and the communication cost.
The results show that the novel algorithm presents powerful solution for the anchor free
    localization.
