Techno-Optimism is gaining momentum and It's great to feel optimistic about the future. I recently shared my views on the niche topic of Techno-Optimism and Effective Accelerationism (e/acc) in discussion with Tomáš Hrivňák and Denník N (in slovak only). Not as much about climate as the title suggests though. Before the recent AI boom, there was a prevalent idea in Silicon Valley called "The Great Stagnation," championed by the economist Tyler Cowen and tech investor Peter Thiel. In recent decades, we were experiencing scientific stagnation, with the pace of innovation significantly slowing down compared to previous periods. The Great Stagnation theory suggested that it had become much more expensive and challenging to come up with new inventions, highlighting a perceived slowdown in technological progress. Lot's of pessimism. Lot's of innovation on the "bits" (SW) space but not "atoms" (HW, materials, physics) space. Then the AI boom came, which stirred the debate about Techno-optimism as innovations in the AI field could impact other innovations exponentially - Law of Accelerating Returns (Ray Kurzweil). AI could potentially help us to accelerate scientific discovery, push the boundaries of our understanding in fields like human biology, physics and material science (and climate). And even faster than we expected. The Techno-Optimist Manifesto written by Marc Andreessen last year started a lot of discussions. Some perceived it as unrealistic or utopian and neglecting risk, others as a good representation of the exponential potential of new innovations and its net-positive effect on our future. I remain optimistic. New inventions and technologies will help us to address major global issues and stagnation as our whole civilization is and was built on technological progress and invention.

What Kind of Leader Are You? Before you answer, look deeper and ask yourself a fundamental question: Who am I? What am I really like? Reflection and self-awareness are essential tools for any leader. They help us understand ourselves, break free from our habitual patterns and re-connect with our core values. Hence, awareness is the gateway to maturity and wisdom. Yet, we often avoid confronting our true selves, hiding behind masks and facades, in our quest to be (seen as) effective leaders. Authentic and mature leaders always align their inner selves with their external actions. They integrate their past and present to constructively and boldly shape the future. #4 Key Reflections: #1 Self-access, profound self-understanding and self-awareness foster your understanding of others. Examine the beliefs that guide you in your daily life. These beliefs shape your perceptions, interpretations, decisions, and actions. Do you foster a culture of collaboration, for example, or promote competition in your organization? #2 Keep it real and bold: Objectively assess your habitual patterns and limitations! Understand what you’re trying to compensate for! Ask yourself what price you are willing to pay for staying true to your values, such as a sense of independence or safety. #3 Want More? Be More! Remember, you can only change yourself, not others. Continuous self-development is a must for conscious leaders. #4 The beliefs that guide our behavior are consistent across all areas of our lives, whether at work or at home. These realms are interconnected and will continue to influence each other. And finally, as Meryl Streep put it so wisely: "Power doesn't change people, it only reveals who they really are."

#Startup question: Can #AI coach help in preventing stress and burnout? We continue working on our innovative startup with Antonina Vashchilo. As a reminder, we, as professional coaches, have conceived a mobile application that will effectively complement the work of a live #coach. It will be a pocket assistant that will timely detect stress and burnout. After all, more than 20% of people in the world constantly require #mental #health support, and over 60% experience daily #stress and struggle to cope with it. The application's functionality will be based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that will analyze various client data. One of the questions that currently interests us is whether people will believe that AI is sufficiently professional to help them. There are objections, and here are the main ones: 🤔 AI is not human. Empathy, understanding, and emotional support, which are crucial in combating stress and burnout, require human interaction, emotional connection, and a personalized approach. Automated AI is still perceived as a machine. 🤔 AI doesn't see the entire context. Mental problems involve a range of emotional, psychological, and situational factors that are important for finding solutions. Some believe that AI is not capable of understanding and addressing the intricacies of their unique experiences. 🤔 AI has limited emotional intelligence. AI systems, including chatbots and virtual assistants, have limitations in understanding and responding to human emotions. They may struggle to interpret non-verbal signals, tone of voice, or subtle emotional nuances, which can affect their effectiveness in providing support. 🤔 Can AI guarantee confidentiality? As the use of AI technology is still in its early stages of development, there is no clear understanding of how much trust can be placed in AI with personal data. People are concerned that even with a signed confidentiality agreement, the system may misuse their data or even experience a data breach. Interestingly, AI itself is confident that it is unlikely to completely replace coaches in dealing with stress and burnout. It humbly believes that it can be a valuable complement to human support, as it has its advantages. These include round-the-clock availability of assistance, faster analysis of patterns and trends leading to stress based on a vast amount of data, and providing a set of proven self-help tools, such as mindfulness exercises and relaxation techniques. It should be noted that we not only consider all objections regarding AI's work but also have found solutions for many of them. Additionally, our application will focus not only on addressing the consequences but also on addressing the root causes of stress and burnout, emphasizing initial well-being. Would you seek help from AI, knowing that it will provide you with personalized solutions rather than standardized ones? What else could serve as evidence of its professionalism for you?

I had no idea it looks so bad! (1) The World Economic Forum reports that in Europe, startups founded solely by women raised just 1.6% of the total capital invested in venture-backed startups in 2023 – a figure that’s only slightly higher in the US, at 2.1%. The same research shows that in Africa, startups led by women accounted for only 1.5% of total funds raised between 2019 and 2023. (2) Women investors are certainly in the minority: PitchBook research finds that in Europe, women make up just 15.2% of decision-makers in investment firms with Assets Under Management (AUM) of €50 million or more. In the US, women hold only 17.4% of decision-making roles in firms with AUM of US$50 million or more. And on top of all this, as has been proven by LouAnn Lofton, #WarrenBuffett invests like a girl. 😉
