The following are the top five reasons why you should create your own funnel visualization report instead of the funnel exploration provided by the #GA4 user interface to get the best results: 1) You can not adjust the conversion window between steps in the GA4 Funnel exploration report. Complex funnels with multiple steps might require analyzing user journeys across varying timeframes. The inability to adjust windows can make it challenging to understand the complete picture and identify bottlenecks at specific points in the funnel journey. When creating your own funnel visualization report, you can adjust the conversion window between steps, which might be more suitable for your website to represent your users' behaviour accurately. For example, If you know users typically browse for a few days before purchasing, you can set wider windows between browsing and purchasing steps in your funnel report. . . 2) The default funnel visualization is based on the events and parameters that are automatically tracked or that you have set up manually. If you haven't set up tracking for specific events important to your user journey, they won't be included in the funnel visualization. Now you may go ahead and start tracking the specific events, but it won't change the historical funnel visualization data. If your event tracking is not set up correctly, it may skew your funnel visualization. Now, you may go ahead and correct the event tracking setup, but it won't change the historical funnel visualization data. You can, however, work retroactively on a custom funnel visualization report. . . 3) The default funnel visualization offers limited customization options, making tailoring the report to your specific needs challenging. Your website or app may have unique steps and interactions not covered in the default visualization. The default funnel visualization might not cover all aspects of your website or app's user experience. Creating your own funnel visualization allows you to customize the steps, events, and parameters, providing a more accurate representation of your user's behaviour. . . 4) Cardinality and data sampling can both impact the accuracy and reliability of the funnel visualization report in GA4. When you create your own custom funnel visualization, you can make sure that the data is not subject to cardinality and data sampling before you visualize it. For example, you can use the data stored in BigQuery to create funnel visualization. . . 5) A custom funnel visualization can provide a more in-depth view of your users' behaviour and their progression through the funnel. This can help you identify bottlenecks, drop-off points, and areas for improvement that might not be evident in the default Funnel Visualization provided by GA4.

🚩🚨 ☠️ Before You Trust #GA4 Attribution Paths, Watch Out for These 6 Critical Flaws! 👇 1) GA4 Attribution paths are based on only "known touchpoints". A touchpoint is an exposure to a marketing channel. GA4 identifies a person through their web browser and device. For example: If a person visits your website via Chrome browser on a desktop PC and then later makes a purchase via the Safari browser on an iPad, GA4 can report that they are actually two people who visited your website. The first person visited your website via the Chrome browser on a desktop PC but didn't make a purchase. The second person visited your website via the 'safari' browser on an iPad and made a purchase. Clearly, this is not true, but that's how you may be reported. So, the attribution paths reported by GA4 will be based only on known touchpoints. . . . 2) GA4 Conversion paths report attribution for only "online touchpoints". For example: If a person sees an ad on TV and then later makes a purchase via a paid search ad on a desktop PC, then GA4 will give all the credit for the purchase to the paid search ad. If you are heavily involved in online and offline marketing, you can not trust your Attribution Paths report. . . . 3) GA4 does not always record and report attribution across devices and browsers. While GA4 offers advanced features ('User ID', 'Google Signals', reporting identities) for cross-device and cross-browser tracking, it is not foolproof. The effectiveness of these features depends on user behaviour (e.g., logging in for 'User ID' tracking), the use of Google accounts (for Google Signals), privacy settings being used, users' consent, etc. . . . 4) Filtered reports can omit certain touchpoints on attribution paths. Data filters in GA4 can exclude or include specific event data, which would affect the touchpoints recorded in attribution paths. If certain events or data are filtered out, they will not appear as touchpoints in the attribution paths. Consent mode can also filter out a lot of data, making your attribution paths unreliable. . . . 5) Data sampling issues can skew the attribution path data. Depending upon the nature of a user's query, GA4 may choose to analyse the complete traffic data set or only a subset of traffic data. When the selected sample is not a good representative of all of the traffic data, analysing a subset of data will not produce the same results as analysing all of the data. In that case, GA4 samples the event data badly, and you cannot rely on its reported attribution paths.  . . . 6) Not all touchpoints are equally valuable. Some touchpoints are more valuable than others, regardless of their position on an attribution path in terms of influencing the key events. However, rule-based attribution models (like 'Last Click Paid and Organic Channels' and 'Last Click Google Paid Channels') do not take this factor into account when distributing conversion credit, making attribution paths less reliable.

💡 Here is how you can create an AI Traffic Channel group in #GA4. 👇 Since AI chatbots are becoming significant website traffic sources, grouping AI-referred traffic into a single channel has become very important. AI traffic in GA4 is currently categorized under "referral" via dozens of different referrers. A custom channel group helps separate this unique traffic type for better data analysis. An AI Traffic channel group in GA4 can be used as primary or secondary dimensions in reports and for creating audience conditions, allowing for a more detailed and flexible analysis of AI-referred traffic. . . The channel group can also be applied retroactively. When you create a new channel group for AI traffic in GA4, it will automatically be applied to all historical data in your property. This means you can immediately analyze past AI-referred traffic without waiting for new data to accumulate. . . Follow the steps below to create a new AI Traffic Channel group in GA4: Step-1: Navigate to GA4 Admin > Data Display > Channel groups Step-2: Click on the three dots menu next to the default channel group and then click on 'Copy to create new'. Step-3: Rename your new channel group. Step-4: Click on the 'Add new channel' button. . . Step-5: Name the new channel 'AI Traffic'. Step-6: Add the following condition to define your new custom channel: Source matches regex ^.*ai|.*\.openai.*|.*copilot.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*gemini.*$ Step-7: Click on the 'Save Channel' button. Step-8: Click on the 'Reorder' button and then drag the AI traffic channel just above the 'Referral' channel. By placing the AI traffic channel above the referral channel, you ensure that AI traffic is correctly attributed before being potentially miscategorized as general referral traffic. . . Step-9: Click on the 'Save group' button. Step-10: Navigate to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Step-11: Scroll down to the data table and then change the primary dimension to the new channel group you created earlier. Step-12: If your GA4 property is recording traffic from AI websites, you should see AI traffic being reported via the 'AI traffic' channel. . . 🚦 How to Prevent a (not set) Backlog in Your #GA4 Reports to Minimize "(not set)" Issues. If you want to minimize (not set) values in your GA4 reports, make sure that the values of your custom dimensions are supplied by "logged" event parameters. Otherwise, you will create the (not set) backlog in your reports. . . A logged event parameter is one that is already being tracked and reported by your GA4 property. For example, the 'page_title' parameter is a logged parameter (check the screenshot below). . . You can also create a custom dimension without a logged event parameter, but this is not considered good practice. When you create a custom dimension without an existing logged event parameter, it will not have anything to populate it with. This could lead to a high number of (not set) values in your reports, making it difficult to understand user behaviour or trends. . . Depending on your website traffic volume, by the time the event parameter is logged, you may already have a significant number of (not set) values in your reports. When you create a custom dimension without a corresponding event parameter, any data collected before adding the parameter will appear (not set) in your reports. This is called (not set) backlog, which can be substantial for websites with high traffic volume. To minimize the impact of the (not set) backlog, make sure that the values of your custom dimensions are supplied by "logged" event parameters.

Nine guaranteed methods to overcome the daily #GA4 BigQuery Export limit... One of the biggest complaints I often hear from GA4 users is hitting the daily BigQuery export limits. Standard GA4 properties have a BigQuery export limit of 1 million events /day for daily (batch) exports. But that still may not be enough for many businesses. Here are my solutions. 1) Re-evaluate your tracking requirements. Do you really need to track all events at such granularity at the GA4 property level? Audit your GA4 property once again and find and remove events that are not business-critical information. Track fewer events.  . . 2) Send more information via parameters than via events, as it can help reduce the event volume. This is because parameters are not counted as separate events, which can help you send more data without hitting the event limit. . . 3) Find and fix duplicate events to reduce the event volume and avoid hitting the event limits. Duplicate events are events that are sent multiple times to your GA4 property. Various factors, such as technical errors, user behaviour, or bugs in your tracking code, can cause them. . . 4) Specify the data streams and/or events to exclude from daily export that you don’t really need, thus potentially overcoming the daily export limit. . . 5) Use streaming export, which allows you to send more than 1 million events per day. The number of events for streaming export is not limited. Make sure that your BigQuery project has enough storage space and quota to handle the streaming export. You can incur additional costs for using streaming export. . . 6) Use a third-party tool to export GA4 data to BigQuery. These tools can often handle larger volumes of data than the native GA4 BigQuery export. . . 7) Track different parts of the website via different GA4 properties. This involves creating multiple GA4 properties, each with its own BigQuery export. Each GA4 property will have its own separate limit of 1 million events per day. That way, you can send more than 1 million events per day without exceeding the export limit. . . 8) Utilize server-side tagging solutions. Filter and aggregate events on the server before sending them to GA4. For example, you could combine multiple small interaction events into a single larger event before sending it to GA4. Process and transform data on the server to reduce the number of parameters or event types being sent to GA4. This allows you to consolidate data before it reaches GA4. Imagine tracking every button click individually. With server-side tagging, you could combine all button clicks within a timeframe (e.g., 5 seconds) into a single "user interaction session" event. This significantly reduces the total event count exported, potentially bringing it under the 1 million limit. . . 9) Upgrade to GA4 360 if everything else fails. GA4 360 has a higher BigQuery export limit of billions of events per day.

Google AI Overview (AIO) tracking in Semrush vs. Ahrefs. I'm a fan of both tools, but there are core differences worth highlighting. Semrush launched AIO tracking on September 3rd and Ahrefs on October 7th – with the Ahrefs database still fully populating. Here are the main differences from my POV and what I like best about AIO tracking within each: *Semrush* • Device type Within Semrush, you're able to toggle by desktop/mobile to see AIO inclusions. On mobile, you generally see less compared to desktop. AIOs on mobile appear quite differently (in terms of showing the link for a source), so I'd expect CTR to be lower. It's helpful to see this insight in Semrush. Ahrefs has device filtering, but I believe this is constrained to search volume. • SERP screenshots This feature is a major standout for Semrush in general. For every keyword in their database, they keep screenshots of SERPs for ~30 days. So I'm able to see what the actual search results look like for an AIO. This can be extremely helpful. • Speed of release It is commendable how quickly Semrush released AIO tracking in their toolset. They probably have the most extensive set of features being tracked in their Organic Research report out of any tool, being a key point of difference for them. • AIO traffic value When filtering by a feature, they have a traffic value metric assigned for that traffic. For instance, the overall value metric for Investopedia for AIOs on desktop in the US is $2.6M, being a helpful figure to share with clients. Ahrefs has a similar metric, but I don't believe you can get this to show when filtering by specific features. *Ahrefs* • Country comparison While both tools have the ability to filter features by country, I quite like how I can click on the locations list in Ahrefs and very quickly see AIO traffic for all locations and specifically what it shows for others. e.g. I can see at a glance that NZ has AIOs appearing for Investopedia. • Ranking in the AIO itself Being different to the SERP screenshots tool for Semrush, all the data is stored in Ahrefs for each of the data points more intricately. So much so that you can see where your website appears in the top 3 results of the AIO itself. You can technically do this with Semrush, but it requires viewing the screenshot. • Position assignment Ahrefs assigns the AIO as position 1 within their dataset, whereas Semrush currently shows it without a position assigned. I suspect Semrush will have reasoning behind this due to managing historical performance, but I do like the Ahrefs approach considering standard AIOs do appear at the top. • Specific date comparisons Within Ahrefs, you can select very specific dates and see how AIOs have changed. I'm a big fan of this feature, especially when completing product grid analysis for eCommerce stores. Note: if either tool thinks something isn't correct in this comparison, please feel free to comment with a screenshot showing otherwise and I'll revise.

📊 Now you can see top-performing ads with EU reach AND lifespan in the free Meta Ads Checker. 💡 TL;DR: - Get the web app: https://lnkd.in/eXMqrP6N - FREE to use (and likely to break 😉 - Over 1700 people used it so far 🔄 What changed? - I got lots of great feedback on this web-app: Thank you 🙌 - One recommendation was to combine reach and lifespan of an ad - for EU ads, you now have a sortable table which shows you ads by most impressions and highest lifespan - you can easily copy-paste the ad URLs for further analysis 📈 How to get the most out of this: - Try with bigger accounts! - When the ad account you are trying to check only has 19 ads, it will most likely not work 🙃 - Hundreds of ads are a good starting point - fair split of US and EU ads (as I am reading out the EU transparency guidelines) - the API takes time. E.g. you will see EU reach of 19k impressions, while in reality the ad had 22k impressions. --> The API lags behind (but is still good enough to see ads with high reach) 🔍 Search for ads of your direct competitors (best case: global players) and see the ads with the highest reach and longest lifespans. If you are not using Custom Channels groups in #GA4 then your marketing attribution is all wrong.   A Channel group is a rule-based grouping of marketing channels.   GA4 can report the performance of a marketing channel via several different referrers.   For example, GA4 can report traffic from Facebook via a dozen different Facebook referrers.   If you are not very careful, you may just take the traffic from 'facebook .com / referral' into account while interpreting reports.   GA4 is not going to automatically consolidate all of the Facebook referrers' data and report it to you as Facebook traffic.   This is something you would need to do it manually. So you would need to identify all the traffic sources which belong to Facebook.   Then, you would need to consolidate the data from different traffic sources into one custom Facebook channel.   The same goes for Google ads and other marketing channels. . . If you are using UTM tracking parameters, you would benefit from custom channel groups. UTM parameters are great for tagging specific campaigns and tracking their performance within a channel. However, they can become unwieldy for complex marketing setups with numerous campaigns. With custom channel groups, you can define rules based on a combination of UTM parameters (source, medium, campaign, etc.) and other dimensions, such as referrer or device category. This allows you to group similar campaigns or traffic sources with specific UTM combinations under a single, more manageable channel. Custom channel groups are not reliant on specific UTM structures, so they can adapt to future campaign tagging strategies. . . Let's say you run multiple email marketing campaigns with different UTM parameters. Using custom channel groups, you can create a single "Email Marketing" channel that combines all these campaigns. Within the "Email Marketing" channel, you can still analyze data by individual campaign using UTM parameters in your reports. . . Here are some additional points to consider: >> Start with a well-defined strategy for how you want to categorize your channels. >> Regularly review and update your custom channel groups as your marketing efforts evolve.

A new attribution setting? Meta made some big announcements related to optimization improvements, and Incremental Conversions was one of them. Meta says that when this was tested, advertisers saw an average improvement of more than 20% in Incremental Conversions. This could help cut out the fluff, though it’s not clear how it would be much different or better than optimizing for click attribution. But, I'm very likely missing some details that will make more sense later. I’m also confused by how Meta calls this an attribution setting, but they explain how this is in contrast to optimizing for volume. So, is this a new attribution setting to go along with click and view attribution? Or is it a performance goal option in addition to maximize number or value of conversions? It was a short description, so I won't hold it against Meta that I'm confused. I'm easily confused, especially without access to a new feature -- or at least some screenshots. I'm not too worried about it. We’ll see soon enough. Meta says that Incremental Conversions will start rolling out in the second half of the year.
