🔍 We need a butcher's shop! This was one of the most common suggestions we heard at Saturday’s pre-Christmas participatory meeting of citizens in Kouřim regarding the city’s upcoming strategic plan. Kouřim – a small town in central Czechia everyone has “heard of but never visited.” Yet, it has so much to offer! In addition to the well-known open-air museum, it hides architectural treasures such as buildings designed by architect Jurkovič. However, these gems are not marked in any way, so many people are unaware of them. Sadly, Kouřim is often overlooked, which was one of the topics discussed during the meeting in relation to the development of tourism. But it wasn’t just about tourism – citizens also discussed and shared ideas about construction, sports infrastructure, municipal facilities, and other topics critical to Kouřim’s future. Citizens had the opportunity to explore various thematic stations at their own pace, providing feedback and specific suggestions. The program also featured a lecture by a local historian Vladimír Rišlink on Kouřim’s history and tourism potential, as well as a discussion with a sports architect Viktor Drobný about the planned sports complex and the development of sports in the town. And, of course, there was time to enjoy mulled wine or tea, taste homemade Christmas cookies, and chat with fellow residents and city representatives. ☕🎄 💡 What occurred to us at Participation Factory? The town would deserve a proper hackathon filled with students, urban planners, and designers who could bring fresh ideas to revive Kouřim and showcase its hidden potential to the world. A great source of inspiration could be the hackathon we organized last year with the Institut plánování a rozvoje hl. m. Prahy, which delivered fantastic results. Working with towns that are just beginning their participatory journey is something we truly enjoy! We want to thank the Kouřim city hall, council members, local citizens, and our partners from M.C.TRITON, who are drafting the strategic plan, for their inspiring collaboration. 🙌✨

💥 Let's Discuss: Is Democracy Too Boring and Theoretical? How Should We Talk about Participation? Let’s be honest: “democracy” sounds good in theory, but how many people are actually excited by it when they’re stuck doing practical governance tasks every day with no time to spare? 💤 From our experience, a very few mayors or city officials decide to actively engage their citizens "because it is good for democracy." In their opinion, they have been elected in a democratic procedure, and that in itself should be sufficient. Thus, to attract their attention to the values of participation, they need to hear other arguments. The truth is, the whole “democratic ideal” can feel abstract and uninspiring. So, what’s the real hook? Maybe it’s time to focus on what really grabs attention—impact, efficiency, and the tangible results that come from participation. As the FiTI pilot project on participation in fisheries transparency wraps up, we’re thrilled to celebrate the progress made with multi-stakeholder groups (MSGs) and national governments in Seychelles and Madagascar. 🌟 Together, we developed action plans to boost stakeholder engagement, improve data transparency, and build capacity for more inclusive governance. From discussing and planning national and regional dialogue platforms to exploring ways to enhance public awareness through education and outreach, these efforts set the stage for sustainable, participatory fisheries management that aligns with both national priorities and local needs. 🎯🌊 The project also revealed important trends: participation often remains consultative and provides limited to no space for co-design and decision-making for stakeholders and the general public, institutional coordination is fragmented, and capacity gaps hinder meaningful engagement. 🚧 On top of that, logistical challenges like limited internet and budget constraints restrict community involvement. But the work doesn’t stop here! We’re optimistic that national governments and MSGs will carry this momentum forward, ensuring fisheries governance becomes a model of transparency and inclusion. 💡🛶 We're proud to have contributed to this project as part of our cooperation with Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI), reinforcing our commitment to transparent and open governance. It’s also a reflection of the principles we champion through People Powered—empowering inclusive participation for stronger communities worldwide. 💪✨
