A strong set of results posted by maib, Moldova's #1 bank and a Horizon Capital investment. The robust performance comes despite rapidly falling interest rates and resulting pressure on margins. These results were seeded back in 2022, at a time of extreme geopolitical uncertainty, when the bank made 2 non-obvious choices: (1) to stick with core lending, supporting our customers, despite lower rates on loans vs. T-bills (which were yielding ~22% at the time, much more than loans), thereby passing on the temptation of quick, easy profits, (2) to accelerate investments in technology and workflow automation. Today, with yields on T-bills falling abruptly, maib's bet on customer lending is paying off. The investments in tech, in turn, led to much better and cost-efficient delivery, including ~60% of all loans and ~70% of all deposits being now disbursed "in-app". I still recall the fastest consumer loan would take a week, at best, and a ton of papers to sign, when we invested. Now, it litterally takes a second.
