Really nice of e27 (Optimatic) to republish a previous article which I wrote in 2018. It was a season where I was deeply involved in mentoring startups. It was also the age of no AI, where I had to write the best I could. In essence, a startup mentor: *Guides, not dictate, how you run your company *Does not get paid, so reject those who want compensation *Is more than a friend, and focuses you objectively *Listens and not humblebrag *Goes beyond business and understands you as a person *Keeps information confidential and not abuse it This pay-it-forward long-term relationships with startup founders and mentors should be revived in our ecosystems. Success of a Startup: Right Time, Right Place. Bill Gross, drawing from his extensive experience launching startups in the Idealab incubator, writes that the decisive factor for success is not the uniqueness of the idea, the level of the team, the quality of the business model, or even the availability of capital, but rather the timing of the launch. In other words, riding the wave of success means choosing the right time to launch. According to Gross, timing is the critical factor in 42% of cases, making the choice of launch time paramount for the success or failure of a venture. Examples that support his idea include Airbnb and Uber. In the case of Airbnb, alongside a solid strategy and idea, a crucial element of the company's success was its timely launch. Airbnb launched its platform during an economic downturn when people were compelled to rent out extra space to earn additional income. Similarly, Uber's success can be attributed to a combination of a brilliant idea, a well-thought-out business plan, and impeccable timing. During the economic downturn, many people were looking for ways to earn extra income, and Uber capitalized on this demand. Research involving over 3,000 startups showed that approximately three out of four startups fail due to premature scaling. This underscores the importance of aligning investments with a market that is truly ready to support them. Of course, Gross's idea does not claim to be the definitive explanation for startup success. The latest term describing how founders of companies that scale up, should continue to behave as they have behaved since day one, being involved in the company the way that got them to success in the first place. The alternative: "Manager Mode." Delegate to your subordinates and empower them to help run the company to allow the company to scale. The old "Hire good people and give them room to do their jobs" philosophy. The knock on “Manager Mode” it seems, is you put your company in the hands of people who are ultimately going to kill it. There is no need for black and white here. You don’t need to choose. You can do both and probably should. 🔑 Because here is the really important point. Here is the thing that has people advocating for this new “Founder Mode”. And it doesn’t apply just to startups that have made it. 𝘿𝙊𝙉'𝙏 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙮𝙚 𝙤𝙛𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙧. Whatever “mode” you adapt, never retreat so far from the front lines that you lose touch with what really matters – the customer. That’s what we’re really talking about here. The original “Founder Mode” worked because it had you right in front of the customer, hearing exactly what they thought. "Manager mode" goes bad when you only hear the customer through others. The Q3 2024 Israeli capital raising preliminary report is out with some positive trends/ momentum, which is pretty remarkable, given the war. 🔹 Israeli startups raised $2.43 billion in the third quarter of 2024, across 99 rounds, representing a 32% increase compared to the same period in 2023 (pre war). Excluding the large transactions (6 transactions of over $100 million), the investments in the third quarter amounted to $1.33, a 5% increase compared to the previous quarter. ♦️ Despite the growth, Q3 2024 saw a 20% decrease in funding and a 17% drop in deal volume compared to Q2 2024, highlighting volatility. 🔹 In contrast to the dominance of the cyber sector in the previous quarter (62% of the total capital raised), in the third quarter the scope The transactions amounted to about 14% of the total of all rounds. SSI Inc. $1 billion round accounted for 41% of total Q3 investments. ♦️ Foreign investor participation remained strong, while local investor activity declined due to geopolitical and economic uncertainties. Innovation truly is a state of mind at Bina - Bridge Innovate Nurture Advance and it was an honor to be part of launching the “BinAi” club, focused on empowering Bina's team with advanced Gen AI tools. Huge thanks to everyone involved, Oshrat Horowitz, Sharon Fireman, Reut Mashiach, Hezi Sztainberg, Ph.D.,Orel Yaverbaum and Merav Marom, for their dedication to bringing this vision to life. During our workshops, we explored the transformative power of research and scientific writing Gen AI tools like Elicit, Connected Papers, QuillBot, Bit.ai, and Scite. We also had an interesting discussion about implementing enterprise Gen AI tools like ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude for enterprises, highlighting their potential to supercharge productivity and drive innovation across the board. However, as we discussed, with these advantages come responsibilities: ensuring accuracy, addressing privacy concerns, and balancing AI’s role alongside human creativity and expertise.
