4-page TRAVEL PULLOUT Special Advertisement Supplement Wednesday, October 30, 2019 IF you’re looking for a quick dose of winter sun on an island that oozes charm then youmust check out Madeira. And since the island is in the same time zone as us, it’s amazing howmuch you can cram into one day and night... 10am START your day with a visit to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. It’s incredibly beautiful, with lots of Asian influences and exotic plants from around the world, and it has breathtaking views over Funchal harbour. > montepalacemadeira.com 12pm MAKE your way down towards the harbour, where you can marvel at the sheer scale of some of the ocean liners, some of which dwarf this relatively small port. Then break for a relaxing lunch at the Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva Restaurant. Enjoy fine cuisine with 360-degree views overlooking the ocean. Certainly one of the finest dining experiences on the island, and not to be missed. > ninidesigncentre.com 2.30pm GET your designated driver (or taxi) to take you along the coast to the magnificent Cascata dos Anjos, a waterfall that cascades across the old coastal road. It’s a very pretty little spot, and is great for photo opportunities as the sun starts to go down. It is also great for cleaning the car if the road is open to cars. 4pm ANOTHER fantastic spot slightly off the beaten track, but well worth the trip for a sunset mojito (they sell a LOT of rum here!), is Maktub Paúl do Mar – a cosy little surfer bar with a relaxed, eclectic vibe. 8pm HEAD back to Funchal Old Town, and stroll around the narrow cobblestoned streets. Finish your day with supper at Santa Maria Restaurante, set in the wonderful surroundings of a former elementary school. The restaurant serves delicious seafood and traditional dishes. Service is excellent and prices reasonable – it’s an amazing experience. > santamariafunchal.com >>WHERE TOSTAY: Belmond Reid’s Palace There’s only one place to stay to soak up the true flavour of Madeira.
