AB 2223 in California may have died yesterday, but the work isn't over. The bill would have permitted hemp cannabinoids in METRC, which would have lowered the COGS of many CPG cannabis products (that aren't flower or THC rich extracts) in California dispensaries. Opposition from small licensed DCC cultivators and extractors ultimately might have killed the bill, along with the lack of a viable enforcement plan that would have removed the products from independent retailers. The theme of state-level hemp regulations persists: over-regulation benefits larger companies equipped with extensive legal and lobbying teams to ensure compliance and scale operations to counterbalance the reduced margins required for compliance. Meanwhile, without proper enforcement, unlicensed entities would still persist in distributing sketchy products in the retail market. Speaking as a narrowly focused individual, I believe we should segment out low dose beverages to be more regulated like alcohol than state licensed marijuana. Lot's of good back and forth here on this interesting post on fats. The issue of seed oil has finally risen to point where natural CPG firms that use seed oil are starting to lose customers. And someone commented that brands which include seed oils are "not investable". I have pioneered better for you fats for 25 years starting when I founded Nutiva back in 1999. Hi Oleic Sun is a valuable oil we should consider in the right formula and situation. It's VERY low in Omega-6. Mostly Omega-9. It can be grown in the USA and should replace high Omega-6 oils which are such a problem ala corn, cotton, soy, canola and regular sunflower oil (rich in Omega-6). It's important for brands that use oils to share a test of their finished products covering the fat profile broken down by saturated , omega-3, 6,9 etc. Here is a chart for folks on sunflower oil in the comments. PS Note that due to many reasons olive oil is becoming very costly and low supply can't meet the demand. Many olive groves in Europe are dying from drought and poor land management.

Def a click-baity headline - but somewhat true... Anytime a legislator uses the word "hornswoggled" - you start to understand how this happened. BUT I've always maintained - if you're in the cannabis industry and NOT considering hemp, you're prob making a mistake. Just like in trad'l retail - manage your various channels with different strategies. Don't sell the exact same thing for cheaper online (duh - but I feel it needs to be said). Ideally, sell something completely different - the majority of the buyers of Hemp D9 shoppers are NOT regular dispensary customers. Maybe even a diff brand name (as I’m guessing CURA is doing ) _________________________________ Like Curaleaf (H/T Boris Jordan ) Curaleaf, America’s largest cannabis company... is launching a line of beverages with a low amount of Delta-9 THC. AND they're going against the US Cannabis Council on this. “We would prefer that it’d be one regulatory framework for all cannabinoids,” Jordan said. “We’re at that point in time right now with the hemp industry where there needs to be some rules put around what you can and can’t put into these products.” Boris is on the record as saying he thinks THC beverages will ultimately be the biggest category LT... Implicit in that statement is the expectation that current non-cannibas users will move heavily into the category (NOT that smokers will stop & move to drinks). bc as any marketer worth their salt knows - it is SOOOOOOO much harder to get people to change behavior. If you can give them something very close to what they're getting now (but better), your chances are a gajillion times higher for success (+/- 1%). So getting drinkers today to try a THC bev that they can buy where they already shop... and have a nicer buzz, and an even better morning... That's kinda what's happening in the THC bev space rn. _____________________________ Yesterday was a set-back - prob driven by the USCC and other special interests. Unfortunately, it also hurts consumer access - and likely props up the illicit market. As we've seen in NY - our current law enforcement isn't resourced to deal with something that has proliferated over the past year. And honestly, is that where they should be spending their time? On something, adults have shown they enjoy and with few / no issues (NOT talking about gas station gummies).

In the first quarter of 2024, with federal cannabis-reform efforts not yielding any practical changes, Curaleaf made a strategic decision to enter the hemp market. This is a trend we are starting to see. Cannabis can only be sold in the state it was produced and only allowed to be sold through dispensaries (in a hand full of states such as #california it could be sold through a delivery service). Intoxicating products that derived from hemp, are legal to ship across state lines, are available via e-commerce and mainstream retail channels. As well the producers of the products do not need to comply with burdensome licensing requirement and predatory taxation. A lot of politicians say that they support small businesses, but for small cannabis businesses to be able to properly compete, they need to have access to the same distribution channels as #hemp. The DEA’s proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use. The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect. Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. Its not a mistake if we learn from it. What makes cannabis medicinal anyway? Prescriptions? No. Physical exams? No. Increased expense and decreased availability? Definitely not. Its the quality stupid. Regulations matter. COAs aren't perfect but they are a tool for honest brokers. Border patrols keep out ditchweed. Dispensary oversight by officials who can tell the difference keep retailers honest. If regulatora take their eye off quality control, bad actors will try to meet demand with bad product. Thailand, where all legal cannabis will be considered medical, has a chance to focus on quality - as many cultivators have been heeding the call to create top notch medical cannabis. Lets learn from the missteps of others and invest in oversight of supply. Then demand will fall in line and prove sustainable in due course. What keeps consumers coming back will be the building blocks of a robust export sector: quality you can trust.
