Our The Landbanking Group conservation product is launched at COP16 Colombia! We’re thrilled to introduce the latest Landler release—making financing #biodiversity conservation easy and accessible worldwide, for any ecosystem. Biodiversity and thriving #ecosystems provide the #resilience businesses, #economies and societies need in the face of #climatechange. It’s not enough to #restore or protect #nature in selected areas; we need to #fund intact nature on a #scale that is up to the challenge! This is why we've developed, in close #collaboration with our partner African Parks Network, an innovative method to #measure, manage, and #monetize conservation effectiveness by #land stewards who protect nature. Our approach consists of issuing #biodiversityunits that represent the Ecological Integrity of a defined area. Land Stewards create them by uploading their land onto Landler and #investors purchase them, contributing to nature while creating #financial value. The first successful example of such units is African Parks’ Verifiable Nature Unit (VNU). Recently, African Parks has announced the first-ever transactions of Verifiable Nature Unit for the Majete Wildlife Reserve, issuing 144 VNUs to the AWE for Nature Foundation and 58 VNUs to the SUN Institute Environment & Sustainability (Deutsche Post und DHL Foundation). The AMES Foundation has also pioneered this new approach by generating 14 biodiversity units in their Dabchick Wildlife Reserve. Our #monitoring method uniquely balances scientific rigor with scalability and accessibility. Traceable to specific 1 km² areas globally, it offers a scalable solution for monitoring #conservation goals such as protecting 30% of each country or ecoregion. Furthermore, designed to be simple and inclusive, the method requires only an area's polygon and #indicator species data, collected through various means, including citizen #science data. This approach ensures #transparency and equitable benefit sharing, making conservation efforts more accessible and effective for all Land Stewards. Every conservationist is now able to upload their areas to Landler and generate biodiversity units. They will be stored in the conservationist's Natural Capital Account and can then be sold to any investor. Every investor is now able to purchase these units from any project originator. In other words, they can now invest in measured, verified, positive nature outcomes. Moreover, biodiversity units can be used as underlying for nature-linked financial instruments such as bonds or loans. During #COP16 in #Colombia, I had the opportunity to attend an event organized with the participation of the Forest Stewardship Council delegation. The first event, part of the "7th GLF Investment Case Symposium" organized by the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), featured FSC's new Executive Director, Subhra Bhattacharjee, who gave an outstanding contribution to the panel "Priorities and Solutions for a Global Biodiversity Finance Roadmap." I’d like to highlight part of her message: "Nature provides countless services that we often overlook or undervalue. 🌱 From bee pollination to the preservation of diverse ecosystems, these contributions are priceless but often go unrecognized in our economic systems. To truly protect these resources, we must assign value to what isn't bought or sold. Non-market valuation allows us to acknowledge the importance of nature’s services, even without a direct market. This is a crucial step toward meaningful conservation. 🌿 At the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), we believe in a simple principle: stewardship over exploitation. This philosophy doesn’t just apply to forests—it’s essential for all aspects of biodiversity. Another deadline extension: Now the deadline is Sept 16th for this incentive that pays small businesses up to 60% of costs for solar, storage and EV charging ~ $30 million total, up to $50,000 incentive per small business recipient. (Called "Apoyo Energético") Note: They wouldn’t have any problem at all getting enough people to sign up for this program if they change the criteria so that any solar company can install the system, rather than only very small solar companies. That’s the main problem. This specific round of funding was announced privately in 2022, publicly in February 2023, and didn’t actually happen until May of 2024. The original deadline was June 24th, then extended to July 9th, and now extended again to September 16th. Had the program been available for all solar companies to participate from the get-go, many of the program recipients could have had solar+storage actually installed and online before the peak of hurricane season in September. Now, none of them will. The idea was well-intentioned to limit this program only to the very small solar companies, to try and give them more business & help their businesses grow. But the purpose of disaster mitigation funds (this program is funded by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development CDBG funds) is to help mitigate the loss of life and suffering after catastrophic weather events. That’s the purpose, that’s the focus, and those are the metrics by which success or failure are measured. So, my advice for us to learn from this: 1. For future similar programs, let’s learn from this mistake. Let’s be very honest, blunt and transparent about why this specific program was 1-2 years late in happening in the first place, and now why it’s being 1-3 months late in getting people to signed up. Let’s not repeat these very specific errors again. It’s about disaster mitigation, so if we’re not actually accomplishing the mitigation, let’s blow it wide open, identify the problem, fix it, and do much much better going forward. 2. Right now, they should change this program so that any solar company can participate. All of Puerto Rico is an empoverished society, so any economic development on the island is good for the island. But US Congress did not allocate $20 billion in HUD funding to Puerto Rico for economic development purposes. They allocated it for disaster recovery and mitigation purposes. Those of us who have worked closely with these funds are well aware of the systemic programs that have caused the entirety of these funds to produce drastically less results than announced & promised, with whatever results happen at all being drastically delayed. Let’s fix it. Please.

The Paraguayan Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development through the National Directorate of Climate Change (DNCC), thanks to a project implemented by the Global Water Partnership South America with the support of the NDC Partnership, is in the process of developing a proposal for the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) System of the mitigation measures presented in the update of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in 2021. At COP16, Nación Verde presented “Guardians of the Monarch,” a reforestation project aimed at restoring the habitat of the monarch butterfly in key areas such as Michoacán, Baja California, and Sonora. The loss of these ecosystems has put the migration of this iconic species at risk, as it relies on these spaces to survive and reproduce. So far over a million trees have been planted and 3,000 hectares are being protected, working hand in hand with indigenous communities. With the ambitious goal of planting millions of trees and restoring 30,000 hectares in the wintering sanctuary, the project also seeks to raise environmental awareness in local communities, integrating conservation as part of their development. Through reforestation, it contributes to ecosystem regeneration and ecological balance, essential for ensuring the future of this species and regional biodiversity. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 Making the impossible possible…   We are thrilled to announce the registration of Verra Project 2084, also known as the Sur del Meta Conservation Project REDD+, and fondly named "Sur del Meta, bosques de PAZ, Sustento de Vida” by the communities. This monumental project, initiated in 2018, embodies the spirit of making the impossible possible.   Taking place in the conflict zone of Sur del Meta, Colombia, this project spans four municipalities bringing together 950 families and covering over 40,000 hectares. Despite not yet being credited, it is one of the zones with the lowest deforestation rates and reduced violence compared to neighbouring areas.   Why is this project crucial? At its core, it addresses the intertwined issues of deforestation, poverty, and violence. Through #carbonfinance, we've aimed to ensure that conservation provides more benefits to these families than any other activities contributing to deforestation and conflict. It's a peace and empowerment project, paving the way for a better future.   As we move towards verification, we're committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and equity in the carbon market. We're collaborating with the Universidad Santo Tomás Seccional Villavicencio to build capacity for geo-referencing and biodiversity monitoring, alongside Conservación Internacional Colombia and with the support of CORMACARENA and local authorities. This partnership will allow us to create a biodiversity baseline aligned with the project's verification.   Economically, this project empowers the local community. We will soon apply our SDG Transparency Financial Framework, shedding light on governance systems and educating the community in financial management. The Paraguayan Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, through the National Directorate of Climate Change (DNCC), thanks to a project implemented by Global Water Partnership South America with the support of NDC Partnership, is advancing in the construction of progress and impact indicators to monitor the implementation of the mitigation measures established in the sectoral mitigation plans of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). On June 11, the “Workshop for co-construction of the goals and indicators of NDC mitigation measures” was held with the participation of representatives of several key public and private institutions. The objective of the workshop was the presentation and socialization with interested parties of the process of defining indicators for 23 mitigation measures. This represents the beginning of a constructive and participatory process to establish the national Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification system (MRV) of mitigation actions. During the last half of 2023 and first half of 2024 I embarked with Oscar Paz Rada towards to bring more clarity in terms of climate change metrics of the NDC goals of the Bolivian Updated NDC, which it should help to establish more clarity and transparency as well as to lie down a clear pathway in order to generate its first and subsequent Biennial Transparency Report. It is necessary to clarify that this publication would not be possible without the financial support of the project Andes Resilientes of Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and the fruitful discussions and help of the APMT, which is the Climate Change Office of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. What if mining concessionaires could be part of forest conservation and land reforestation efforts? Recently, at the FEDEMIN event in the Peruvian rainforest, I presented "Mining concesion conservationist Proposal" to bridge the gap between conservationists and mining operations in the Peruvian Amazon, specifically in Madre de Dios. This initiative, in collaboration with PASKAY, RA Engineering, FEDEMIN, and local government officials, integrates miners into programs like the UNITED NATIONS REDD+ initiative to combat land degradation and deforestation. The goal is to expand mining concessions to include conservation areas, engaging alluvial mining concession administrators in Madre de Dios to contribute to land rehabilitation through tree planting and native species preservation. By incentivizing the preservation of standing trees for carbon capture and selling carbon credits, we can foster sustainable mining practices in the region, transforming the relationship between mining and conservation in the Peruvian Amazon. #Conservation #Mining #Sustainability #PeruvianAmazon #LandReforestation

Small-Scale and Artisanal Mining: Engines of Sustainable Development in Peru Small-scale and artisanal mining play a crucial role in the economic and social development of Peru. These activities directly generate employment for over 500,000 individuals and indirectly benefit more than 2 million people. They positively impact remote communities, transforming them into development hubs. However, to fully realize the potential of small-scale and artisanal mining, progress is needed in three key areas: 1. Formalization Since 2002, the Peruvian government has initiated various formalization processes, but much remains to be done. The requirements are complex and costly for most miners. Simplifying these processes and providing technical assistance will enable miners to access benefits such as better marketing, credit, and improved working conditions. 2. Technology and Production Many artisanal miners use rudimentary techniques that hinder productivity and harm the environment. Training and technological transfer are essential for enhancing extraction and processing methods sustainably. 3. Trade and Remediation Informal miners often sell their output at low prices to intermediaries. By facilitating access to formal markets and certifications, miners can secure better prices. Additionally, promoting environmental remediation by closing abandoned mines will benefit surrounding communities and enhance the sector's image. In summary, small-scale and artisanal mining hold significant potential for sustainable development in Peru. By advancing formalization, technology, trade, and remediation through an integrated approach involving the government, companies in the private sector, and communities, we can turn these economic engines into examples of responsibility and progress for both the country and the world. The door has opened to the Symbiocene and we are leaving behind the Anthropocene. Did you miss the Symbiocene Summit at London Climate Action Week? Don't worry, we have a recap video for you! Last week, my Co-Founder Kalpana Arias from Nowadays On Earth and QueerBrownVegan produced our first-ever summit and it was a huge hit with the London community. Our idea from last year hosting evening mixers blossomed into a larger project to expand the overreaching power we have to create dialogues that move beyond the normal discussions around environmentalism and bring together our separate interests to connect with each other. A lot of people talk about intergenerational collaborations, but the Symbiocene isn't about speaking on it but rather embodying it through our actions and beyond the panel stage. Our presenting partners, Stephanie Dillon& Citizen-T, have continuously believed in our mission. We also had supporting partners like Ecosia & Icarus Complex Magazine. This was the most unique activation during climate week that brought together artists, activists, and storytellers through different realms of geopolitical spheres from social, racial, and environmental movements, we brought people together to teach the importance of being friends. With over 30+ programs, 50+ speakers, and 3+ musical performances alongside booths that carried resources and moments of interactive tours, the Symbiocene team produced this summit within less than 6 months.
