Meet the behind-the-scenes heroes of the COP29! The success story behind COP29 is driven by a team, but not just any team – it’s a big family. With the support and contributions of UN representatives, led by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, combined with the hard work of every team member, the conference was successfully carried out. 🌍 COP29 Breakthrough: Article 6 Finally Agreed Upon 🌍 After nine years of negotiation and numerous roadblocks, nearly 200 countries at #COP29 have achieved a landmark agreement on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This historic deal sets the framework for robust international carbon markets, allowing nations and private entities to trade and credit mitigation outcomes while ensuring transparency and integrity. Key Highlights of the Agreement: ✅ International Carbon Markets: Operationalisation of Article 6.2 and 6.4, clarifying rules for trading Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (#ITMOs). ✅ Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (#PACM): Methodological standards finalised, with the first issuances expected early next year. ✅ Dual-layer Registry System: A compromise balancing decentralised data with optional issuance capabilities to support developing countries. ✅ Transparency and Reporting: Stricter reporting requirements to prevent double-counting and build trust in global markets. This agreement is far from perfect—some concerns remain over safeguards, inconsistencies, and transparency. However, it marks a pivotal moment for scaling carbon markets and encouraging collaboration across borders. With the groundwork now laid, the focus shifts to implementation. 🌍 Climate Change & Animal Migration: A Visual Journey 🌿 Did you know that animals can often sense environmental shifts long before we do? As climate change continues to reshape ecosystems, both humans and wildlife face new challenges. So, how do animals adapt and where do they go to survive? 🔍 This fascinating map showcases the migration paths of mammals, birds and amphibians across North & South America as they seek out more hospitable climates: 🟪 = Mammals 🦬 🟦 = Birds 🐦 🟨 = Amphibians 🦎 Researchers from the University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy analysed the migration routes of 2,954 species, using climate models tailored to each species’ unique needs. By employing “electronic circuit theory” flow models, they mapped out pathways connecting current habitats with potential future ones. The results are striking, revealing key refuges in regions like Canada, Ecuador and Argentina. 🌱 What Can Be Done? Conservationists and land managers have several tools to help animals adapt to warming climates and maintain connectivity: 🚧 Removing barriers like fences 🛤️ Constructing wildlife overpasses and underpasses on major roads 🔄 Rerouting infrastructure such as pipelines & power lines to minimise habitat fragmentation 🌿 Why It Matters: Understanding these migration patterns empowers conservationists and policymakers to protect crucial corridors and refuges, boosting the chances for species to thrive amid climate shifts. 🤔 What if we had similar migration models for other parts of the world, like Europe or Asia? How might that reshape conservation strategies globally?
