A bowl of warm soup can mean so much in the cold weather. 🥣🧡 As temperatures plummet, our #NEIGHBOURHOODFirst community programme has recently mobilised 100 young volunteers to give out #homemadesoup to the needy in Yuen Long. Since July, our team of volunteers has been reaching out to over 1,000 elders, market vendors, cleaners, and security guards working tirelessly behind the scenes to serve our community. Now in its 12th year, this initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our community partners. Among them are #SocialWorkOfficer of Social Welfare Department Ms Ling Wai-yu, Principal of #TinShuiWaiMethodistCollege Ms Wong Sau-lin Stella, Principal of #HoDaoCollege (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) Mr Chau Chi Man, and #YuenLongDistrictCounsellor Mr Cheung Wai-sum, who joined our launch ceremony to show support to our young volunteers. 🙌 Through small acts that warm hearts, NEIGHBOURHOOD First continues to foster a spirit of neighbourly care and connection. | Cooking is caring for elders living alone |   For elders living alone, dining out or grocery shopping can be challenging, especially as temperatures drop.   To spread warmth and support those in need, talented youth from the NEIGHBOURHOOD First Roundtable Committee organised “Cook and Care with NEIGHBOURHOOD First,” a culinary and frozen meal design competition sponsored by Lee Kum Kee.   Since October, participating youth have been trained in cooking techniques, safety protocols and nutrition knowledge, culminating in a competition held at the The HKFYG Jockey Club Media 21 Kitchen. In the finals, the Shau Kei Wan Youth S.P.O.T team won with their heartwarming dish: Braised Chicken with Arrowroot, Potato and Carrot.   The winning recipe will soon be transformed into 640 frozen meals by #CattyandTael, and distributed to elders living alone through 6 Youth S.P.O.Ts.    Embodying the spirit of NEIGHBOURHOOD First, this initiative demonstrates how small actions can create a ripple effect of change in the lives of those in need.   #HKFYG #NEIGHBOURHOODFirst #YouthSPOT #YouthVolunteering #CommunitySpirit

| Optimising cross-border health services to meet growing medical needs | How do Hong Kongers perceive cross-border healthcare? Youth I.D.E.A.S. surveyed 600 Hong Kong residents aged 18 to 74 to find out. | Championing youth innovation and entrepreneurship | We were thrilled to unveil the 12 winning projects of the 2024 Qianhai Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao-Taiwan Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Hong Kong Division) yesterday. Organised by the Qianhai Authority and hosted by the Qianhai Service Group and the HKFYG, this year’s competition attracted 534 participants and 249 projects, spanning #artificialintelligence, #biotechnology, #newenergy, #advancedmanufacturing and more. We were honoured to have the award ceremony graced by Mr Clement Woo Kin-man, Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs; Mr Zhang Guolai, Second-level Inspector, Youth Department, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; and Mr Stephen Liang, Assistant Executive Director, Hong Kong Trade Development Council. #KokoxiliPhotonics won gold in the #EnterpriseGrowth Category for its high-speed, energy-efficient photonic chips, which drive advancements in AI technology, 6G network, and beyond. In the #StartupTeam Category, the gold award went to #NovelTec for its general-purpose intelligent chassis (GIC) featuring wireless charging, L4 autonomous driving and voice interaction. The winning teams will receive up to RMB 80,000 and incubation support to kickstart their ventures in #Qianhai. #Change is on everyone’s lips, but are you ready to embrace it when it happens? A new study from Youth I.D.E.A.S. reveals that, in the face of the #economictransition, only around 20% of the 600 working youth surveyed have considered a #careerpivot. Key findings from the survey include: 🔍 60.3% of respondents are not optimistic about Hong Kong’s economic prospects, yet 84.0% of them are willing to stay in the city to pursue their careers 🔍 84.5% believe that the economy needs transformation, and 87.2% agree that nurturing local talent is key to economic development 🔍 However, only 19.7% have considered a career pivot, as many remain uncertain about their future direction The findings underscore that while youth recognise the need for change, they lack the confidence to take action in the volatile economic environment. To better support them and address the challenges they face, we recommend: 📌 Fostering collaboration between applied sciences universities and companies to provide technical training aligned with future industry needs 📌 Introducing Belt and Road-related degree programmes to develop expertise in emerging markets like Southeast Asia and the Middle East 📌 Expanding the scope of the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) to include more online courses for working youth seeking further education How should we #upskill, #reskill and #futureproof our young talent to navigate the economic transition? | Making young voices heard 🗣️ | Last Friday, we had the privilege of engaging youth in a #policydiscussion featuring Ms Alice Mak Mei-kuen, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, at “Policy Address Online @M21.” Held at The HKFYG Jockey Club Media 21, the event brought together 200 secondary students from nearly 30 schools, as well as university students and young professionals. During the interactive session, Ms Mak elaborated on the youth development initiatives outlined in the newly released Policy Address, including the “Youth Post” hostel and the GBA Youth Employment Scheme. She also exchanged views with students who voiced their opinions. When asked how young people could contribute to policy development, Ms Mak highlighted that secondary students as young as 16 can now nominate themselves to serve on two district youth committees, as part of an initiative aimed at fostering youth involvement in community affairs.
