What grandfathers and senseis can learn us about leadership 💡 One year after launching the introverted leadership training program at Telenet, I'd like to share the top 10 recurring themes. Let's dive into number 5: What does an introverted leadership style look like? This question arises in our program because, in Western European culture, leadership is often associated with traits we consider to be extroverted strengths. However, this is not universally true. For instance, in Japan, the image of a calm, wise “sensei” might represent a more natural form of leadership than that of a charismatic general commanding his troops. This brings us to another strong image: that of the grandfather. Consider the differences between how a parent and a grandparent guide a child. A parent might apply a more directive style (e.g., “Don’t do this”), while a grandparent often takes a different approach: - He doesn’t instruct the child but listens attentively and asks the right questions, encouraging the child to find solutions independently. - He allows the child to approach him with questions by creating a safe environment where difficult topics are not taboo—topics the child might not dare to discuss with their parents. - He always remains calm and helps put things into perspective. To me, the sensei and the grandfather styles feel more natural than most of the leadership advice I have received in the past. These styles are based on one-on-one connections, deep trust, and genuine discussions that get to the essence of issues. The company recently released Q1 2024 results showed revenue of N752.9 billion, up 32.5% compared to N568.1 billion for the same period in 2023. However, it reported a pre-tax loss of N575.69 billion, a sharp reversal from the N162.9 billion profit reported a year earlier. South African mobile giants MTN and Vodacom are key players in Africa's telecom industry. MTN, spanning 17 African countries, and Vodacom, present in eight, collectively serve over 450 million customers as of end 2023. Vodacom boasts 186 million customers, with 23% in South Africa, while over 80% of MTN's impressive 294.8 million subscribers are spread across other African nations. Interestingly, MTN Nigeria outperformed South Africa in contributing to MTN's service revenue in 2023. Exciting developments shaping the African mobile landscape!
