The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), highlights the urgent need to scale up the implementation and uptake of agrifood system solutions by enabling policies, innovation, and technologies and ensuring these solutions reach smallholder farmers. But what then is an agrifood system and why the urgency? An agrifood system encompasses the entire range of activities, processes, and infrastructure involved in producing, processing, transporting, storing, marketing, and consuming food. It includes agricultural production, post-harvest handling and storage, processing and transformation, packaging and distribution, marketing and retail, and consumption. Agrifood systems aim to provide nutritious food, support rural livelihoods, contribute to sustainable development, ensure environmental sustainability, and promote social equity. In response to this imperative, Green Farmlands' Green Basket initiative incorporates various components by collaborating closely with smallholder farmers in crisis-affected regions to prioritize agrifood systems solutions. Green Farmlands through the Green Basket initiative work to support agricultural production through training small holders farmers and providing them with the resources to increase production, thereby enhancing food security and nutrition. The initiative also reduces post-harvest losses by providing proper handling and storage techniques. The Green Basket initiative provides a vital platform, offering smallholder farmers stable market access and connecting them to urban markets and consumers. This facilitates distribution and marketing, enabling consumers to purchase fresh produce. The initiative promotes healthy consumption habits, supports sustainable agriculture practices, and reduces food waste and losses. The Green Basket initiative, promotes fair prices and market access for smallholder farmers, thereby contributing to social equity. The initiative also encourages environmentally friendly practices, ensuring environmental sustainability. The Green Basket initiative exemplifies a holistic approach to agrifood systems, addressing production, post-production handling, processing, distribution, marketing, retail, and consumption. By doing so, they enhance food security, support rural livelihoods, promote sustainable development, and ensure environmental sustainability and social equity. Implementing these key actions, we can build resilient agrifood systems that mitigate climate change, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable land use and help build a resilient future with food security for all.
