Honoured to meet Frans Riemersma in person and Scott Brinker virtually at the recent Swiss Martech Summit 2024 and represent x-elance. With my background in integrated #MarTech / #SalesTech tool-suites, their research highlighted an important second strategy: feature requirement-driven composability. 💡 1️⃣ In the first strategy, the vendor platform and it's certified third party apps and plug-ins ensure integration. A good example for midsize and larger organisations is Salesforce and the Salesforce AppExchange platform with almost 6.000 components, solution packages and apps. An example for small and medium business where the vendor integrates much functionality (including and beyond Martech/Salestech) is Zoho and it's Zoho One suite. A downside of this strategy is that the customer purchases an overpackaged solution and for innovation depends on vendor time-to-market. 2️⃣ In the second emerging strategy, the integration responsibility shifts to the customer, enabling to lead with innovation. To achieve feature requirement-driven composability, the below steps have to be considered: 1. Embrace a feature-led MarTech and SalesTech strategy, instead of tools and suites-led 2. Select the functionality your business strategy requires tomorrow and in the future 3. Translate that functionality into features 4. Per feature, find different composable apps that encompass that feature's functionality 5. Assess their composability and the future outlook of the app vendor 6. Select the best apps; consider two or three alternatives 7. Build one or a few test-stacks 8. Test the composability and integration of the test-stacks 9. Select the production apps and stack 10. Implement the (pilot-)stack ✳ At both sides of the spectrum, interesting developments are taking place. Marketers seek additional functionality and efficiency to drive up ROI. Both strategies have their advantages and challenges with regards to functionality, integration, innovation and cost. A Martech/Salestech-strategy might also be a balance of the two, where a composable stack complements an integrated suite of vice versa. ✳ What is the best balance for your organization, depends on how open you are to understand the pros and cons of both strategies.
