When I relocated to DXB to join a local bank in 2018, Revolut already had a waiting list for prospective customers in the country, but it took them a while to be vetted by local regulators. After Mubadala joining its cap table, Revolut may now shake the UAE retail banking market as: - local customer base is mostly comprised of younger generations that do not see any value in a bank branch. Some of these prospective customers come to the UAE already having a Revolut account in their home country. A local twin account with dedicate pricing and servicing may be a key success factor; - incumbent’s product portfolio is plain vanilla, and non-banking offering is constrained by a very narrow understanding about what customers want; - limited offering in investing/WM with a consistent net outflow from local banks to investment/trading platforms globally. To counter that, local banks went into a me-too rush in whitelabeling Saxo Bank trading platform, but with serious limitations in the product line-up, including lack of crypto; - while cost/income ratio of local banks is significantly lower than in Europe, the outdated core banking infrastructure makes serving a current account quite expensive, not to mention additional services built on a host of platforms not always properly orchestrated; - minimalism in branding of local digital banks is not supported by lean digital processes, creating several pain points to customers engaged is specific requests, particularly when they leave the happy path; - local banking UX/UI is usually below par, with most players lacking a customer centric process to design their digital experience. Best local players could only try and copycat Revolut UX/UI, but without their strategic clarity, nor the sustaining product line-up.

Very happy to announce the closing of a $4M priced equity round led by AlbionVC with participation from existing investors a16z crypto CSX and CMCC Global. This brings our total seed funding this year to $7.2M. I'm also honoured to have Jay Wilson and Shiau Sin YEN joining the board of directors. Both bring a wealth of experience to our team. The announcement is timely. Stablecoin market cap has reached an all-time high today of over $190B. Stablecoin transaction volumes more than doubled that of Visa in the first half of 2024. And they are increasingly not just a crypto product for crypto users. Over 1/3 of consumers in Latin America have made a purchase using a stablecoin. That is ASTOUNDING. It's clear that the next generation of financial services and markets will be built on internet-native, permissionless digital dollars (i.e. stablecoins). I expect the market cap to reach several trillion by 2030. Our role at OpenTrade is to build critical components for this burgeoning ecosystem; stable, secure, compliant stablecoin lending and yield products that can be embedded directly in the digital wallets and apps businesses and individuals use to manage their financial lives. Over the past year we have seen our business perform very well and expect to see that accelerate in 2025. Almost weekly now, new customers and partners of OpenTrade products are being launched. Whether we’re powering USD and EUR savings products for hundreds of thousands of consumers in Colombia via our partnership with Littio, enabling compliant retail access to the risk free rate through our partnership with WOO X, powering institutional yield products for investors in the EU and APAC through our partnerships with SCRYPT, Trakx, and InvestaX, it’s all part of the same mission, the same mega trend, the same future. Q2 and Q3 were our first two quarters in full production. Over that time we’ve grown total outstanding loan principal over 100% and have processed over $100M in transaction volumes. Customers report that they love the product and their usage is growing. The pipeline has more than doubled and its growth rate is accelerating as we’ve gone from pure founder led sales to a growing team of rock stars. We've also launched several new products and support for a new network ( Avalanche). The platform continues to function extremely well, with zero major production incidents, withdrawal times averaging less than 24 hrs and most processed same day, and more and more customers fully integrating via our improved API.  Our network of financial counterparties continues to grow; we are now in production with some of the largest Financial Institutions in the world, enabling us to offer same day liquidity, access a huge range of off-chain assets to expand our product suite, and build trust and credibility with customers. Needless to say, the future is extremely bright.

In venture investing, it's easy to forget that hype must eventually seed real fundamentals, which must grow into free cash flow (or the promise of it). There's nothing new under the sun, and this reality informs our approach to hot sectors at Sovereign's Capital: What's the real and growing market need? What's the scarce resource where value accrues? And what protects a company's progress when it works? We endeavor to back leaders who can discern good answers to these questions. When excitement fades, we believe the founders who will win are the ones who continue to build with excellence during the Hype Cycle's Trough of Disillusionment. During the web3 craze, a confluence of technologies created excitement for the reinvention of computing. But when the dust settled, investors asked fundamental questions: What real problem does this solve? Does web3 do it better than less complex tech? And where's the governance? While the hype died, progress continues today, thankfully with much more focus on real solutions. To be clear, I'm not a hype-hater. We need hype to create the surface area for real technological innovation. But in the hype, Ben Graham's charge to be "Intelligent Investors" is wise -- we must appeal to the conviction of our theses and mental models rather than emotion (with humility, since that's easier said than done in VC's fog of war.) One company we've admired for how they've navigated the hype is OpenEden. Jeremy Ng, Eugene Ng, and the team are using web3 to make yields from real-world assets, starting with Treasuries, more accessible through a delightful UX. When we invested years ago, we were impressed with their big vision combined with incremental and prudent execution. They were building to address a felt need, and in partnership with Singaporean regulators. Since then, they've built an institutional grade product, complete with Big Four audits and the only "A" rating from Moody's for a tokenized real world asset. Today they're managing over $50M in total value locked, and we expect that to grow. Well done to the team, and it's an honor to be partnered! We now stand on the Peak of Inflated Expectations in the midst of AI's Hype Cycle. We believe the more visceral problems being addressed, and AI's more natural adoption patterns, make it an easier place to find real solutions than during web3's craze. And yet we're asking similar questions: What proprietary elements of your app let you win as inputs become increasingly commoditized? How does your picks-and-shovel solution fit into the future architecture of AI? And in your thesis of the future world, how does your solution serve the TAM that doesn't yet exist and is hard for most people to see today? If you're a faith-driven Seed or Series A founder energized by the excitement of AI, the desire to build something enduring, and the redemptive potential of AI for human flourishing, we'd love to meet you.

I'm delighted to announce the launch of the TempoCap Liquidity Indices, which, on a quarterly basis, track the largest European VC-backed exits since January 2020. We are tracking three main types of exits: all cash, cash and shares, and public listings.   We struggled to find this information in a single place or in a comprehensive format, so we decided to compile it ourselves from a range of data sources. Of course, we may have missed some exits, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if we have.   Here are a few notable trends from the data: 🔴 On all cash exits: A limited number of these were above $1 billion in Europe over the last nearly five years - we counted only five. Out of the top 15 cash exits, six were companies from the U.K., four from Germany, three from France, and two from Scandinavia - including the largest, Tink. 14 out of the top 15 exits were to strategics (with only one PE buyer), and 60% of buyers were U.S. companies. The average time to exit from the founding date was ten years. 🔴 On exits for cash and shares: There have been a limited number of these above $1 billion in Europe over the last circa five years, too —we counted only four. The U.K. had five companies out of the top 15, and interestingly, two each came from Poland and Germany, while the largest, Wolt, is Finnish. Again, 60% of buyers were from the U.S. The average time to exit from the founding date is nine years. 🔴 On public listings: Here, all 15 listings were above $1 billion—but some didn't stay above that level post-IPO, and three are no more! Out of the top 15, seven (or nearly half) came from the U.K., three came from Germany, and the largest, UI Path, came from Romania. The average time to IPO from the founding date was 11 years. 🚨 EGYM attracts nearly $200 million in primary funding from L Catterton and Meritech at a valuation of over $1 billion 🚨 I'm excited to announce that EGYM / EGYM | DACH / EGYM Wellpass has recently secured nearly $200 million in primary funding from L Catterton and Meritech Capital, valuing the company at over $1 billion. The fundraise last year with Affinity Partners marked a significant achievement for EGYM: we were profitable, debt-free, and maintained a big chunk of the fundraise in the bank, all while experiencing rapid growth. That meant that we no longer relied on investor funds for survival; instead, we could take the time to focus on building relationships with the best possible investors to support EGYM's mission. Phew 😅 that was quite a relief as a founder, and the next round ended up happening much faster than expected. We are a fitness technology company: In my research, I identified L Catterton as the ideal partner for EGYM on the fitness and health side, given that they are the world's largest fitness investor. For the technology piece, Meritech Capital stood out as the best fit, given its deep understanding of SaaS and its success stories with leading companies like Facebook and Salesforce. Therefore, I started reaching out to both firms with the intent of building a long-term relationship, which has turned into a round of funding. I had the pleasure of meeting Marc Magliacano, a Managing Partner in the L Catterton Flagship Fund, and was impressed by his extensive experience in fitness investing. His deep industry knowledge will be invaluable as he joins our board. On the Meritech side, I was equally impressed by Paul Madera, a co-founder of the firm. His sharp questions and focus on the important elements of our business convinced me that he is the right fit for EGYM. The EGYM team has earned the trust of what I consider to be the best possible investor partners for our mission to get to where we are today, and we are much more capitalized than we were planning. However, this trust now comes with even greater responsibility.
