With more and more open-weight models being released and fine-tuned by their communities, proof has been made that lightweight models can be run by individuals for specific use cases as efficiently as with a huge American hyperscaler. On the other hand, governments and bigger private institutions could rely on this principle but with even bigger models adapted to their infrastructure. Swisscom is definitely showing the way!

Consolidation of the Swiss banking sector: issues and challenges Union Bancaire Privée (UBP) announced today that it has entered into two exclusive agreements with Société Générale under which UBP will acquire Société Générale’s private banking activities based in Switzerland (Société Générale Private Banking Suisse), as well as those based in the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands. Both transactions are expected to be finalized by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The Swiss banking sector is experiencing accelerated consolidation, marked by a steady decline in the number of private banks. In 2021, this figure crossed a symbolic threshold, falling below the 100 establishment mark. There are multiple reasons for this consolidation: - Regulatory pressure: Increasingly strict regulatory standards are significantly increasing banks’ operating costs. Low interest rates: Low investment returns are penalizing banks’ margins. - Digital transformation: The investments needed to modernize information systems and offer new digital services are significant. - Increased competition: The banking sector is subject to intense competition, both nationally and internationally. The challenges of mergers and acquisitions: While consolidation is a response to these challenges, it is not without risk. Mergers and acquisitions raise many questions: - Cultural integration: Bringing together two corporate cultures can be complex and generate resistance. - Maintaining quality of service: The new entity must be able to continue to offer quality service to its customers. - Achieving financial objectives: The profitability of the transaction must be there. - Successful IT integration: Data migration and the implementation of a common IT system are crucial issues. Keys to success: To succeed in a merger and acquisition, it is essential to take several factors into account: - Strategic complementarity: The two entities must complement each other and create synergies. - Realistic assessment: The acquisition price must be justified by the growth and profitability prospects. - Transparent communication: Clear and regular communication with employees is essential to reduce uncertainties and encourage buy-in to the project. - Rapid and efficient integration: The migration of IT systems and the integration of teams must be carried out as soon as possible. The consolidation of the Swiss banking sector is an inevitable phenomenon. To succeed in these operations, banks must prioritize strategic mergers, conduct rigorous analyses and implement solid integration plans.

Let me share some thoughts with you.   1. Institutional Adoption and the Crypto Valley are still going strong With ZKB, one of the world's safest and one of Switzerland's biggest banks is entering the space, it shows once again that Switzerland is still a leading player in the worldwide crypto scene, and that institutional adoption is going strong. 2. Security is the critical puzzle part While I‘m a big fan of self-custody, most individuals and institutions can‘t or don‘t want to store their crypto assets.
