The Global Fund Board meeting made decisions on many important issues for us to be more targeted to further increase the effectiveness of our work. It was an excellent board with a great sense of unity. Key words I heard repeatedly were innovation (e.g., to revolutionize HIV prevention), integration and sustainability. More work to be done to define priorities and approaches to accelerate these critical themes for the next grant cycle, and for the future of the Fund and fight against HIV, TB and malaria.

'Africa calls for urgent, needs-based climate finance framework ahead of COP29 to address critical adaptation needs' says a new piece from Farmers Review Africa. The article highlights various pre-COP meetings, including the AGNES Africa #COP29 strategy session we supported in Nairobi recently where negotiators, policy makers, and technical experts came together to shape Africa’s common climate negotiation positions. Lucy Njuguna focused on #adaptation tracking - one of the topics emphasized during this session. Great news! Heifer and Fairfood release a new Living Income Strategy for agri-food commodities! The last year we’ve been working hard on this data-forward strategy, that allows farmers to earn a decent livelihood through holistic efficiency and income interventions. In a White Paper, we explain the 2 key ingredients of this strategy: ✍  Living Income Price (LIP), calculating the price per unit of a commodity based on its actual production costs, as to establish a minimum viable price floor, ensuring that producers are compensated fairly for their #sustainable and efficient production efforts. 🌽 Cost-Yield Efficiency (CYE), categorising producers’ efficiency by considering both their costs and yields. It provides a nuanced understanding of efficiency levels among farmers, identifying areas for improvement and forming the basis for tailored interventions. The contemporary agri-food sector faces a profound challenge that threatens the socio-economic stability of smallholder farmers worldwide: the pervasive inability to secure a #livingincome. This issue stems from multiple factors, including limited arable land, suboptimal agricultural productivity, and inequitable value distribution within supply chains. As global commodity prices fluctuate, smallholder farmers remain vulnerable, often unable to influence market trends or earn a fair share for their products. Our strategy is launched in the context of the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) which mandates higher social responsibility standards for commodity buyers. With all the G20, COP and other current discussions around climate finance and the fight to reduce and mitigate climate change I more than often fell very frustrated to see huge announcements of funding, milhons and milhons of dollars being committed to finance the transition, but hardly see any of this money reaching the ground and creating long lasting impact. It is great to the communication and positioning of governments and companies, but it is more than often an empty promise. I hope we can stop talking about huge numbers and start talking about REAL numbers for a change...

🌳🌍 Insurers are stepping in carbon, supporting the nascent $2B voluntary carbon offset market (VCM), and helping to address risks like data fraud, climate impact, and project viability. Oka, Cloverly, Kita and CarbonPool have raised money and are leading the way with innovative solutions. More below: 🔹 Oka, The Carbon Insurance Company™, which closed a $10m fundraise this year, has launched policies covering 7,000 projects globally, helping stabilize the market with data-driven pricing models. Since January, Oka has provided quotes to roughly 50 carbon market participants and completed "a number of sales," raising $10 million in venture funding​. 🔹 Cloverly, which raised a $19m Series A round last year, has 300-strong corporate users which can shop for options in a convenient digital marketplace, and has insured projects in Indonesia, highlighting the affordability and benefits of these new insurance options. 🔹 Kita, which raised £4m in seed financing earlier this year, offers solutions to ensure timely delivery of carbon credits, adding a layer of reliability to the market, e.g., buyers could receive replacement credits from projects Kita has pre-selected. 🔹 CarbonPool, founded by ex Allianz executives, raised 10.5 million Swiss Francs earlier this year, compensates its clients with high quality carbon credits for unexpected carbon credit shortfalls and reversal events caused by natural catastrophes, weather effects and machine breakdown. 🔹 Global demand for offsets hit a record, with carbon emitters buying credits to counterbalance 164 million tons of CO2 emissions last year. Purchases could increase to billions of tons annually and be worth $1.1 trillion by 2050 if buyers remain confident​. 🤔 My Thoughts: Insurers are seeing the opportunity here and could be a crucial cog for providing confidence and stability in the carbon offset market. With significant players in the VCM seeking ways to hedge their risks, these insurance products are essential for maintaining market confidence and encouraging investment​. While challenges remain, particularly around long-term project viability and premium costs, the involvement of insurers can bring much-needed confidence and credibility. Not-for-Profit Organisations in Uganda often face a frustrating challenge when seeking corporate funding. Many have impactful missions, reaching hundreds of lives daily through essential services, yet they struggle to gain sustained support from corporate companies. Usually, they only get one-off donations around Christmas or Easter, instead of the long-term partnerships they're looking for. This gap often stems from a lack of understanding around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). While NGOs know their missions, many do not fully grasp how CSR aligns with corporate goals or how to effectively engage with companies on a strategic level. As a result, Corporations feel that the asks often miss the mark, leading to the polite but disappointing response, “We cannot help at this time; maybe next year." Recognizing this need, Prof Noeline Kirabo, Doris Mitti Kimuli, and I run a workshop in August to bridge this knowledge gap. Our goal was to educate NGOs on what CSR entails, how it varies across companies, and the key considerations before initiating engagement. We have already started seeing partnerships emerging from this engagement (story for another day), and it is exciting to know that this was long overdue for many NGOs.
