Just because someone in your life didn’t know how to love you right doesn’t mean you’re unlovable. It’s their limitation, not a reflection of your worth. Letting them go can be tough, but it’s a crucial step toward respecting yourself and what you truly deserve. One of my teenage clients experienced just how crucial these boundaries can be. She adored her friend and supported her through thick and thin, but when my client made one mistake, her friend turned on her. This friend spread rumors and isolated my client from their circle, making her feel completely alone. After starting counseling with me, my client began to heal and regain her confidence. She has since moved on from that toxic friendship and now understands the importance of surrounding herself with people who genuinely care and respect her boundaries. Remember, setting boundaries is not about pushing people away. By defining these limits, you teach others how to treat you, reducing the chances of feeling undervalued or unloved again. 1. Start valuing your own time. If someone habitually expects you to drop everything for them, it's okay to say no. This helps establish that your time is valuable and you are not just available at someone else's convenience. 2. Be clear about what you need from the relationships in your life. If you need more support, or if certain topics are off-limits because they make you uncomfortable, voice that. It’s important that those around you understand what you need to feel safe and supported. 3. Keep your personal details or vulnerabilities safe until you fully trust the person. Sharing too much, too soon, can sometimes lead to manipulation or getting hurt. Gauge how much someone respects your privacy and shares in return before opening up completely.
