Yurko Andrea Biancini EIT Digital My last article for International Society of Service Innovation Professionals (ISSIP) CRACKING THE CODE ON DIGITAL TALENT Businesses worldwide are facing a new set of challenges, attending the rapid development of digital technology, from coping with accelerating technology development, environments of heightened competition, new market identification, restructured work processes and modes, and new stakeholder demands. Failure to adapt to these changes poses an existential threat to existing organizations. Firms embracing and developing digital transformation will gain competitive advantage in the new business environment. To successfully transform in the digital era, organizations must be agile, innovative, and adaptable. Digital transformation of industry is no longer optional, but essential for businesses if they are to remain competitive. According to a European investment Bank (EIB) study, digitalization is associated with better business performance, across metrics of productivity, management practices, innovation, growth and provision of higher-paying jobs. Digital transformation is often credited with reducing costs – due to a better use of technology or process improvement – but its benefits are certainly not confined to cost reduction. Digital transformation also involves a process of creating new business models that adapt to a digital environment. In fact, we should also recognize that a company’s digital approach can have a huge impact on the nature of the job, the different types of jobs, or the way people are managed. Innovation and service design in the public sector - more important than ever.

“Leadership is not the practice of a model or the promotion of an idea. It is a kind of love declared with courage and shown with care.” Gianpiero Petriglieri, a psychiatrist by training, a professor at INSEAD, describes what is the most prevalent style of #leadership today – the Dominant model. Petriglieri says this is the most #popular because it simplifies leadership, making it look easy and accessible. While people talk and write about different styles of leading, they all boil down to this #dominant one. This kind of leadership is eponymous – it is, ultimately, about dominance. To be a leader under this umbrella style that covers various versions of leadership, you have to make it to the top of the hierarchy or be at the centre of attention of a circle and get others to do what you want them to do. There is, evidently, an issue with this style: every time this popular model is used, “we end up making things worse … hiring and grooming selfish #leaders or becoming one ourselves.” This leads to people becoming “unhappy with their bosses.” Petriglieri then explains what good leadership looks like by asking us to respond to the question “Have you experienced #goodleadership?” Leadership is a kind of #love, Petriglieri asserts, and his explanation of how this is so must be heard and pondered to be understood. Some gems are as follows: · Leadership creates #relationships where one feels “#committed and not captive”. · “Passion can drive us and make us obsessive sometimes, but eventually fades.” #Care makes us “#generous and is something that we can cultivate.” · If you want to be a leader, stop asking ‘How do I move up?” “How do I get others to do what I want? … That is seduction that might charm people at first but will bring mistrust in the long run. Ask yourself, instead, “what do I care about? Whose future do I care for?” · Show that care in a “complete, #credible, and #consistent way”. · “Leadership is not the practice of a model or the promotion of an idea. What are the main facilitators that companies can deploy to overcome the main obstacles in Design Thinking adoption? For years, the literature focused mainly on mapping adoption barriers, providing scant emphasis to the facilitators that permits to overcome taht obstacles. We have discussed the topic (from both a theoretical and practical point of view) in our new open-access article titled: "Boosting Design Thinking adoption in organisations through a game-based toolkit: A gamified approach in building facilitators to overcome Design Thinking adoption barriers” Co-authored with Gianluca Carella, Michele Melazzini, and Francesco Zurlo and published in the Creativity and Innovation Management Journal. Dear colleagues and friends, I hope that this note finds you very well. On this end all is well: very busy and very happy. All methods make assumptions ... when assumptions are satisfied methods are effective, and when assumptions are not satisfied, methods fail...There are two ways to address method failure and thereby improve drill success rate (or accuracy of medical imaging): (1) find a way to improve the satisfaction of assumptions or prerequisites or (2) find a fundamentally new method (for the same exact goal) that doesn't make those difficult or impossible to satisfy assumptions and prerequisites. The first removes the assumption violation, by satisfying the assumption, and the second removes the violation of the assumption by removing the assumption... We pursue one or the other of these approaches for different assumptions. For example, for de-ghosting we improve methods to provide de-ghosted data, and for Q compensation, multiple removal and depth imaging and inversion, we remove the assumption of subsurface information. That has been and remains our approach to directed fundamental research- that first define and then address prioritized challenges and seek and deliver high impact game changing capability. In our experience it is absolutely essential to move beyond the community of researchers, and to communicate with those making petroleum drill decisions in seismic exploration, or in medicine, to listen to surgeons, on the real current imaging capability and to define when there is method breakdown and failure. Our technical conferences, committees, publications and workshops, rarely, if ever provide that essential clarity and information. We have been and remain enormously grateful, fortunate and appreciative for the encouragement and support we received and receive- and as always, we look forward to staying in touch.
