Where are they now? 16 Bit - AI-based Prediction Tool for COVID-19 Patient Care Project Partner. 16 Bit’s mission is to create trusted AI medical device software to improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of healthcare for all people. In 2021, 16 Bit led a DIGITAL project to collate and share a large dataset of high-quality data from COVID-19 patients, enabling their team, and others, to develop AI-based prediction models to predict health outcomes and resource needs. 16 Bit continues to build predictive models to identify patients at-risk of disease progression, with a focus on extracting insights from existing data to provide otherwise unseen opportunities to improve care. Their flagship product, Rho, targets a known care gap in osteoporosis. Powered by AI, Rho identifies patients at-risk of this under-screened bone disease by analyzing conventional x-rays that are being acquired for some other clinical reason. The Rho result prompts care providers, earlier than they may otherwise, to conduct fracture risk assessments and initiation of prevention or intervention programs if appropriate. In 2021, Rho received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Breakthrough Device status for its potential to offer more effective diagnosis for this irreversibly debilitating disease, using breakthrough technology. It has since received Health Canada licensing and FDA de novo marketing authorization. Rho has screened over 140,000 patients in Canada, on its way to reaching 16 Bit’s goal of screening 1 million Canadians by year end.
