Health is fundamental to everything. Our Head Global Access Michael Oberreiter inspired me, our colleagues in Roche in Austria and key stakeholders in the Austrian healthcare system with his visionary thinking. Too often we discuss healthcare as a cost. But every Euro invested in health has a significant return to society, socio-economic studies prove. Women in focus: Focus on heart health ❤️ and identify cardiovascular risk early 🔍 As part of my Austrian tour 🇦🇹 on women's health, I had a very insightful conversation today with Beate Scheiber, health spokesperson in the Tyrolean state parliament. Our meeting focused on the important topic of cardiovascular disease in women 👩‍⚕️. Women are often at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and it is crucial to be aware of your own cholesterol levels. Beate Scheiber emphasized the need for an incentive system to motivate people to get regular check-ups 🩺. The free preventive medical examination is the ideal tool for identifying risks early and taking preventive measures. By raising awareness of these issues, we can make a significant contribution to improving women's health. As a mother of 3, this week's topic is very close to my heart: Childhood and Adolescent Obesity... Shedding light on a growing problem (growing twice as fast in children than in adults), especially in our part of the world: according to the World Obesity Atlas 2023, 1 out of 5 adolescents in UAE lives with Obesity and this number will be 1 out of 4 by 2035. We have been keeping a close eye on emerging data that describe the implications of climate change on diseases in our research portfolio. An increasing pool of modeling studies indicate that changes are likely in the epidemiology of certain vector-borne (e.g., malaria and dengue) and water-borne (e.g., cryptosporidiosis diarrhea) diseases because of rising global temperatures. Specifically, evidence suggests these conditions could be exacerbated in regions where they are already endemic and could spread to new areas. There is also concern that the effects could more severely impact populations in low- and middle-income countries depending on the resiliency of civic and health infrastructures. For these reasons and more we have worked with the Financial Times to review state-of-the-art knowledge on this topic. Please learn more at the links below!

World FSHD Day: Reflecting on Progress and Hope Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) may be a mouthful, but for our family living with it, it is a daily reality. Today, on World FSHD Day, we join the global FSHD community in raising awareness and celebrating progress. Here is what I have observed over the past 20+ years since my daughter’s clinical diagnosis: -         FSHD Society Expansion: The FSHD Society has grown, championing research, advocacy, and support for patients and caregivers. -         Clinical Trials: From less than 25 to nearly 75, clinical trials for FSHD have multiplied, offering hope for effective treatments. -         Connecting with Others: I have met caregivers, patients, and colleagues impacted by FSHD. Their dedication fuels our collective fight. -         Physicians in the Community: Some of my colleagues, physicians themselves, live with FSHD, emphasizing the urgency for solutions. -         Sponsors’ Commitment: Executives and employees of FSHD sponsors demonstrate unwavering commitment to patients. In 2014, I predicted a disease-modifying treatment for FSHD by 2025. While my timing may have been optimistic, late-stage candidates in the pipeline give us hope.
