Navigating Power in Team Coaching: A Key to Transformation Cyril F. | Pierre Fel | Eric Salmon & Partners | Certified B Corp One of the most profound learnings in team coaching is understanding how power dynamics influence team development. Contracting—particularly around power—is a crucial step often underestimated, yet it shapes the entire coaching journey. In recent conversations, we reflected on cases where alignment (or lack thereof) between a leader’s expectations and the broader team’s needs shaped the outcomes of coaching interventions. We realized that contracting isn’t just about setting objectives but about clarifying how decisions will be made and ensuring these align with both team goals and the leader's vision. For example, working with hierarchical leaders can be challenging when their natural style leans heavily toward top-down decision-making. While research suggests that empowered, collaborative teams outperform, as team coaches we must recognize when a leader’s existing approach stems from cultural or situational factors—like restructuring or a high-pressure turnaround. Meeting leaders “where they are” while promoting dialogue within their framework can create gradual, sustainable shifts in power dynamics. As coaches, we’re not here to force a transformation that doesn’t resonate with the team’s reality. Instead, we aim to foster open, generative dialogues that can subtly evolve the structure over time, allowing all voices to contribute—even within a traditional power model. When we contract with leaders, we must be clear: transformation begins with an honest conversation about power and authority. This is where impactful coaching starts, and without it, we risk misalignment and unmet expectations. Is it ok to be overwhelmed by expatriation, even if I have chosen this path? There are many reasons for moving and migrating. In their Global Migration Report 2022, the United Nations estimated that 3.6% of the global population, around 281 million people, were international migrants in 2020. For some people, moving is very easy. Most people, however, feel overwhelmed and lonely at various points on their journey. This also applies to individuals who have migrated by choice, such as #expatriates who move for work. The decision to leave an established life behind requires a lot of flexibility, a high level of responsibility, and sustained strength to cope with unknown challenges. But who truly has sustained strength? Despite experiencing significant strain and drastic life changes, most of my clients who moved to a different country by choice for work or family reasons say they would make the same decision again today. One reason for that is the incredible personal growth they experienced during their expatriation. Generally, individuals who move TOWARDS a goal and fulfill their values are more content and resilient than those who only move AWAY from a situation. Transform the diversity within your teams into a performance lever!   This was the theme we discussed with members of the Groupe Finaxim Network during the webinar on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.   Participants explored and practiced one of our five HOPES strategies, designed to enhance the management of diverse teams. 🏆 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 – 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞! 💼💥 To start with, I would like to thank one of the most brilliant people I've had the luck to come across, Thibaut André, for sharing this with me. In Simon Sinek’s powerful talk, he makes a compelling distinction between what’s at stake in business 💰 and what’s at stake on the battlefield ⚔️. While lives are on the line in the latter, Sinek argues that the essence of cohesive teamwork 🤝, trust 🤲, and commitment 🔥 is just as essential in the corporate world 🌐. Business may not be life-or-death, but the "battles" we face—especially in times of crisis 🚨 or intense project management 📊—hinge on trust and the willingness to support each other fully. A pivotal takeaway for me was the 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐱 📈. This tool categorizes team members along two axes—trust and performance. High-performing, low-trust individuals may meet targets 🎯, but they undermine team cohesion, fostering a culture of self-interest 🤷. In contrast, even average performers who are high in trust become invaluable to the team 💪, elevating overall morale and resilience. This principle resonates deeply when managing crises or complex programs where a tight-knit, trusting team can mean the difference between success and failure 💼➡️🏆. Sinek's emphasis on 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 💥 struck a chord with my own experience. True commitment can’t be superficial or transactional; it's about taking risks 🎲 and being fully invested. When employees feel they have a stake—not just in their KPIs 📊, but in the very outcomes they’re working toward—trust flourishes 🌱. People become more accountable 🧩, more supportive 💬, and better equipped to overcome challenges 🚀. Reflecting on Sinek's insights, I see that the real measure of success in business isn't only in achieving results 🏁 but in 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 isn’t just a value but an everyday practice 💯. What have I been up to recently you ask? Well, only a full on revamp of my coaching approach, a new business endeavour and book in the pipeline! For now, coaching: Welcome to my world of life purpose and clarity coaching! My name is Nadine Ekiya Abeng, and I will be your guide on this transformative journey. You might be wondering, ‘What exactly is life purpose and clarity coaching?’ Well, let me paint a picture for you by introducing you to the two types of clients I typically work with Navigators and Seekers. First, meet the Navigators. These individuals already have a vision for their lives. They’ve delved into books, consumed content, and have a clear understanding of their life purpose. They know the why behind their actions, and they even know how they will benefit them. Yet, despite this clarity, they struggle with consistency. They find themselves hitting roadblocks, sabotaging their progress, and losing momentum. This is where I, as your coach, come in. I illuminate the areas of your life—awareness, behaviour, thoughts, emotions—where you may be stumbling. Together, we identify the blockers and devise strategies to overcome them. Navigators often see quick results, typically within a month or six weeks, as they are already well into their journey. Now, let’s turn our attention to the Seekers. These individuals are typically yearning for something more in their lives, yet they haven’t quite pinpointed what that something is. They’re still in the phase of exploration—reading, researching, and seeking answers. My role with Seekers is to help them unravel their desires, craft a vision, and identify their values. Together, we align their actions with these values, creating a roadmap for their journey. But the work doesn’t stop there. I ensure that they stay on track, finding consistency and traction in their actions. Given the depth of exploration involved, working with Seekers typically spans 8 to 12 weeks. Whether you see yourself as a Navigator or a Seeker, my goal remains the same: to help you overcome unconscious barriers and unlock your full potential. " Valuing what older people have achieved while being open to new ideas from younger people. *** innovation and entrepreneurship: a combo of art & science *** This week I caught up with Pascal Meyer, the iconic founder of QoQa. He's probably the most fun Swiss entrepreneur. Pascal admits he's extremely intuitive in his approach, but fully sees the value of testing ideas. Our conversation reminded me of the debate "is innovation and entrepreneurship more art or more science?". It's of course both and I tried to illustrate this with a quick video. With Strategyzer's innovation programs we packaged both, the artistic and scientific part, into ultra-accessible programs that democtratize world-class innovation and entrepreneurship.
