[Impact Indicators🌱] Imagine your favourite beach without any sand 🏖️😟 Here is what you need to know when seeing the #Depletion of #abiotic resources in an #environmental report 👇   💧What are abiotic resources exactly?  The term “abiotic” describes non-living components, as opposed to biotic elements (which are living). E.g. water, stone, metal, minerals, sand. They are crucial to the human civilization and natural ecosystems. 🪨 What impact has abiotic depletion on the ecosystem? Mining of abiotic resources for example lead to the destruction of natural habitats, soil erosion or pollution. (Next to many other social & economic impacts)   📊 How is the depletion of abiotic resources included in #LCAs? In an LCA, ADP (abiotic depletion potential) is split into two categories: one for elements, eg non-fossil-based resources (minerals and metals) and one for fossil resources. non-fossil resource depletion is calculated in Antimony (Sb) equivalents. It was chosen as a reference substance because it is the first element in the alphabet for which a complete set of necessary data (extraction rate and ultimate reserve) is available. fossil resource depletion is calculated in MJ: the weight of material is converted to its potential energy. (1 kg of coal hard is 27.91 MJ) 🤨 Why is this indicator controversial? The scientific LCA community is warning that there is an uncertainty on this Impact Indicator, because there is no "perfect" way of quantifying it. In collaboration with PHIOS AG, Pantec Biosolutions AG presents a new application example. To guarantee the focus we decided to do a FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation) on each image in one of our projects. The amplitudes in the frequency domain and the diversity of them can be used to determine if the image is focused or not. 💡🔄 The calculation runs at 100 FPS on an Arria10 SoC FPGA and was written in VHDL. 👌 The implementation was carried out in cooperation with @PHIOS. Pests are one of the biggest threats to global crops, often being difficult to effectively predict. Researchers have developed a potential solution: a microphone capable of analyzing the unique vibrations that an insect makes when it's chewing on a plant to identify the insect itself. The tool could help farmers identify where exactly they have pests, allowing them to use pesticides more strategically and less often. This could bolster crop yields while keeping pesticide usage to a minimum. #AgriTech #CropScience #Agriculture

🎉 Today is another huge day for science-based targets for nature and the Science Based Targets Network! We're pleased to announce the release of updated technical guidance for companies. The renewed methods we’re launching today have increased the feasibility and practicality of science-based target setting while maintaining ambition and scientific rigor. In large part, this is the result of the learnings from a year-long target validation pilot we have run with a group of pioneering companies. They have gone through the process of assessing and prioritizing their environmental pressures on nature, developing targets, and having those targets reviewed by a validation team. My main takeaway is that while challenges remain, we’re on the right path. Ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods are strong candidates for emissions reductions. Though blue carbon seems to be mentioned in every report on near-shore CDR methods, restoring mangroves and seagrass beds should be done first and foremost for biodiversity protection and restoration rather than for their carbon potential, given their limited potential (0.0008-0.3 GtC yr). The three methods with the highest CDR potentials are ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), and sub-seafloor geologic storage. 1. Ocean Fertilization Adds nutrients like iron to the ocean to stimulate phytoplankton blooms that sequester CO2 when they sink. Estimates vary widely, but it could capture around 1 GtC yr-1. It is low-cost (less than $50 per ton of CO2 captured) and can enhance marine productivity—risks of harmful algal blooms, nutrient robbing, and regulatory issues. Ocean Nourishment Corporation is involved in ocean fertilization research. 2. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE): It involves adding alkaline materials to the ocean to increase CO2 absorption and could absorb 2 GtC yr-1 if deployed globally. One of the co-benefits is that it helps reduce ocean acidification. The challenges come from high costs ($70 to $120 per ton CO2), logistical issues, and potential ecological impacts from increased alkalinity. Ebb Carbon is working on electrochemical OAE. Sub-seafloor geologic storage: It injects captured CO2 into geologic formations beneath the seabed. There is a huge storage capacity (over 36,000 GtCO2 in U.S. waters alone), and it could provide long-term storage (10,000 years or more) with low leakage rates. As with any technology with a low readiness level, challenges arise from high costs, specifically for offshore transportation and injection, and potential risks from CO2 leakage. 🌍 Can #airborne #microplastics impact #climate and #weather patterns? Recent research suggests that microplastics may truly influence #atmospheric processes by acting as ice-nucleating particles. 🧪 This study investigated the ice-forming potential of four common types of microplastics—LDPE, PP, PVC, and PET—testing their capabilities to induce ice formation in the atmosphere. By simulating environmental aging, researchers examined whether exposure to UV light, ozone, and other environmental factors changes the ice-nucleating abilities of these particles. ❄️ Results showed that all studied microplastics could initiate ice formation, though aging affected this activity differently across types. ⚠️ These findings reveal an atmospheric role for MPs as ice-nucleating particles, with potentially significant implications if they accumulate to high concentrations—bringing up a major question: could microplastics be another partner in #climatechange crime? 🌍 In previous posts, we highlighted how #PFAS and #microplastics (MPs), the so-called “forever chemicals,” combine to increase environmental #toxicity. 📊 A newly published study extends this to a greater, using an additivity model to quantify how these pollutants impact crucial life in #Daphnia, a key species in aquatic food webs. 🧬 By examining gene dysregulation and reproductive health, this study shows how the chronic presence of these substances drives serious ecological effects, such as age at maturity. 💔 PFAS-MP mixtures cause reproductive issues like egg abortion and delayed development, with PFOS and PET treatments notably increasing mortality. The study found a 59% additive and 41% synergistic impact, showing that even low levels of these pollutants could disrupt aquatic ecosystems. 🔍 By tracking gene and metabolite disruption, the study highlights molecular pathways affected by PFAS and microplastic exposure. These insights can help identify potential toxicity markers across species, including in vitro and in vivo testing in human health models. ⚠️ These findings reinforce the urgent need to regulate PFAS and microplastics, to mitigate their compounded environmental impact. 🧐 Such a study raises a major question: How much longer can we ignore the impact of "forever chemicals" on our ecosystems? About another reality, true reality on glyphosate : new study, published in Water Research magazine, in Le Point today. AMPA molecules are very well known for their use as anti-scalant agents. Are they derivatives of glyhosate molecule decomposition or is glyphosate molecule a derivative of AMPA, I let the scientists debate on that point. However, what is a recognized fact is that discovery of the use of glyphosate as a powerful herbicide happened during the 1950s. John Franz, a Monsanto scientist, is to be recognized for this discovery. Many years ago, I was told that it is even a bit by chance that John Franz, working on and with AMPA molecules, has had the brilliant idea or brilliant intuition to test these molecules within herbicide formulations. And when we talk of formulations, we mean different chemical ingredients mixed together in a liquid as a start ( to make a short and simple description of what is a formulated solution). As such, probably, the glyphosate molecule by itself, alone, had no powerful total herbicide performances, if any performance at all ( I don't get how an anti-scalant, by itself, could have herbicide activity). But, combined with other co-formulant(s), then the miracle occured. Human society needs to be informed and educated accurately, properly and honnestly. On the basis of this German study, let's hope that many people will review their so negative point of view on glyphosate and let farmers more in peace. Without farmers, no food. Remember !
