The facts might not be news for climate enthusiasts, but they are sobering. *Did you know that excess rainfall, often caused by warmer air, is a result of the air holding more water vapor at higher temperatures? The relationship between temperature and water vapor was described back in 1834 in the Clausius Clapeyron law. It's not a linear progression; at 1C warming, the air can hold 7% more water vapor, increasing further with each degree. Brace for wetter times ahead, especially up North! *The current geological period, "the holocene," is an exceptionally long interglacial due to a unique orbital configuration. Humanity could enjoy a stable climate for tens of thousands of years if we don't disrupt it - but we are. The irony and tragedy of this situation are evident. 🚨A new UN-REDD Programme report, authored by climate experts from UN Environment Programme and UNEP-WCMC, reveals a major gap in forest protection, management and restoration in current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) pledges.🌳 Published at the Bonn Climate Change Conference #JuneClimateMeetings, the report highlights that current NDC pledges submitted by countries between 2017-2023 do not meet the global ambitions to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030. Forests have the potential to reduce a third of the emissions required to close the 2030 mitigation gap. The scenes from Valencia in Spain are horrific. So far, 95 people are confirmed dead with many still missing. The damage to property and infrastructure has not been estimated but is likely to run to billions of euro. It is interesting to note that as the rainfall was getting worse the authorities were able to activate an emergency warning system that may have saved lives, even if it arrived too late for others. In Ireland our flood warning system is not fit for purpose and we are utterly unprepared for the kind of disaster that Spain has been witnessing over the last few days or that visited central Europe a month ago. It is unlikely however benign climate change has been so far that Ireland will be unaffected by extreme weather and it is vital that we have adequate mitigation and adaptation policies and plans in place. My friend retired professor Barry McMullin has launched a petition to demand a standalone TV debate on climate change during the 2024 election and it would be great if as many people as possible signed it. Getting off fossil fuels involves a range of policy choices that seem complex and scary but if we devote enough time to debating them and teasing out the options that political parties are offering, it will do the public a better service than glib one-liners that don't mean anything or fix anything. I've been tracking climate science since the 1980s. The most dangerous thing about it is those smooth curves, with their 10th and 90th centiles spreading gracefully around them. They imply a gradual, predictable process, and that we are somehow in control. Ask anyone British if the weather is predictable and they'll laugh. And when you approach it from a risk management perspective, the question isn't "what's likely, what is the 10th-90th centile?", it's "What is the worst that can happen?" This article is deeply disturbing, because the worst that can happen is very bad indeed, and is much closer than anyone expected, because (as seems to be the case too often) the statistical "fat tail" is fatter than predicted. Also because ocean plastic pollution acts as a threat multiplier. The best paragraph is saved 'till last: “We think of climate change as being this kind of fairly steady progression of change in average conditions,” he said. “I think that we’ve learned, even since 2022, that there are also big changes in extreme events.” https://buff.ly/49189vh

A(nother) failed COP. Now what? 👀 Look at the structural causes which are making the COP process no longer fit for purpose (some hints: Why are countries not committed to climate action still selected as host countries? Why are those most affected by the climate crisis not central at the decision-making table?...), and fix them! ❕Hold world leaders accountable, and push them to re-find the urgency, hope, and drive for change our world needs. This urgency for action should be front and center - at local, national and international level - if we want a chance at inverting the catastrophic direction we are heading towards (this year, we passed for the first time the famous 1,5 degrees threshold). ✊🏽Do your part: start from your family, community, school, or company - each of us has the power to drive change, to initiate actions that will make a difference for us and for the generations to come. The new draft texts from COP are far from what we need. We just received a new draft text from the COP29 Presidency on the New Collective Quantified Goal - or the global climate finance goal. The draft has gone from 10 pages yesterday to 5, and now has no more options or brackets. We’ve made a lot of progress: the last draft was incredibly vague, and failed to outline a numerical goal. However, the funding floor of 250 Billion is nowhere near enough, and the reference to 1.3 Trillion is nothing more than lip service. Additionally, the 100 Billion USD goal we had before explicitly had to be funded by developed countries, while in this new draft they must simply "take the lead." The new mitigation document is even worse, and represents not only a failure to make steps forward, but a step back. References to the transition away from fossil fuels have been entirely removed, essentially undoing all the progress we made in the UAE last year, and most of the progress since the Paris agreement. It opens the door to the shunning of emissions reduction commitments, and would allow oil giants to continue polluting our atmosphere as long as they find territories with loose regulations, which they will, and buyers, which they will. We see in these two texts the manifestation of greed on the international stage. The content of the mitigation text is due to the world’s petrostates threatening to veto any text with reference to the transition away, as it would require them to pivot their income sources. The content of the NCQG text is regressive, and doesn’t come anywhere near the required goal because developed countries are keeping their purse strings tight, and still refuse to acknowledge collective responsibility for the havoc our historic, climate-harming actions have wreaked on developing countries. While the NCQG text is passable, and likely almost as good as it will realistically get, the mitigation text is completely unacceptable, and a disaster for the world’s climate efforts. We must do everything we can to ensure that: 1. We leave Baku with a deal; 2. We ensure that developing countries get the grant-based funding they need; 3. We don't backslide on previous climate-action commitments.

What Max Scher from Salesforce said! If we’re interested in maximizing climate impact and outcomes we need clear incentives that support inside and outside value chain mitigation. Hoping we can increase attention and focus in particular on adaptation and resilience as explicit parts of climate action strategies in the future.

What does the Trump victory in the US mean for #climateaction globally? That's up to the rest of us to decide now. My advice: Let's fight even harder, and smarter! In another valuable contribution, Carbon Brief asked scientists. Most call for other countries and non-state actors to step in and step up. And of course they are right. It is easy to despair right now, for scientists and activists (this one included). What makes things particularly difficult is the fact that those most affected are those least #responsible. But giving up is simply not an option. Too much is at stake. For all species. Lets abuse Trump's win to turbocharge #action everywhere else. However: Important now is to REALLY step up the fight - and to realise that more of the same will not get us anywhere near our targets in the time. Particularly with Trump in the white house. One key step-up opportunity is the #border - and with it, a focus on consumption-based emissions. The Trump administration has already announced how they plan to fight with #tariffs. Let's give them that fight by adjusting for GHG. The EU has provided the groundwork with #cbam. Others can and must go further. The right implementation will strengthen developing countries as the pricing of consumption-based emissions by rich importing nations will create the mechanism needed to #finance the global transition. More action is required in combating often unmentioned underlying root causes of biodiversity loss - unsustainable land use practices, unregulated mining and monoculture plantation farming.

A sense of reality in Berlin and what happens next?   The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), headed by Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck (Alliance 90/The Greens), can also be described as a key ministry in the EU context. This is where EU policy is made. This is demonstrated by our appointment as part of the WKO Strategic Capital Networking with the important Department for Fundamental Policy Issues, Coordination, COREPER I and the European Parliament. Their experts know best how much new legislation has come out of Brussels in recent years.   Like the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO), the BMWK is in favour of more coherence and less duplication in the implementation steps that are now to follow. When it comes to reducing regulation, the ministry speaks of "good governance". It is not a question of less or more, but of better. There is already a joint Franco-German initiative on this. The ministry is working on a practical check for companies. The issue of the rule of law is also directly linked to fair competition.   Enrico Letta´s report is seen as a valuable policy contribution, although we are only at the beginning of the discussion. In terms of measures, the proposals go very far. It is difficult to imagine that the necessary majority of the Member States will be able to agree on all of these areas. Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen's announcement that the reporting requirements for companies will be reduced by 25% over the next few years is to be welcomed. The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber has already prepared a paper with 88 concrete recommendations for action.   We would like to thank Corinna Boelhoff, Jörn Rauhut, Michael Merkel, Doreen Hanisch and colleagues for the open and committed discussion! 🌏Leveraging Technology Action Plans for ambitious climate action - The Role of #technology and how to increase #NDC ambitions. At the Bonn #ClimateChange Conference, key speakers underscored the importance of Technology Needs Assessments (#TNA) and Technology Action Plans in boosting climate ambitions and attracting essential investments. At the #JuneClimateMeeting event, speakers from countries, the United Nations, and international climate organizations emphasized the need for tailored support, capacity building, and the integration of TNAs into national policies to achieve meaningful #climateaction. Through the TNA project, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre has supported over 100 countries in their #ClimateTech journey, helping them determine their technology pri­orities for mitigating and adapting to #climatechange. In my column for the Firstpost, I write about the hypocrisy in global climate politics. In 2019, at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, industrialized nations passionately spoke about the urgency of climate change but continued approving fossil fuel projects and delaying climate finance commitments behind closed doors. This duality persists, as seen in the recent Bonn Climate Change Conference's stalemate over loss and damage financing, reflecting the resistance of industrialized nations to compensate those most affected by climate change. Despite a decade-old pledge to mobilize $100 billion annually for climate action in developing countries, this target remains unmet, with current finance vastly inadequate. Reforms in multilateral development banks (MDBs) are essential, as highlighted by a G20 expert group's proposal to triple MDB lending by 2030. Developed nations must move beyond moralizing and take concrete steps to fund climate mitigation and adaptation in developing countries. Justice and fairness demand that those who have historically benefited from pollution now shoulder the responsibility to aid others.
