One day after EssilorLuxottica announced its deal to acquire Supreme from VF Corporation, Meta, Facebook's owner, is in talks to acquire a stake of about 5% in the eyewear company. Based on recent market value, a roughly 5% stake could be valued at around $5 billion, a relatively small for Meta, given its market value of around $1.2 trillion. EssilorLuxottica makes Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses and sales of the glasses have exceeded expectations. The devices, an important part of Meta’s hardware strategy, allow users to take photos and listen to music with the frames of their glasses, among other features. Maintaining ties with Luxottica is crucial for the success of smart glasses devices and the company’s ambitions to build the so-called metaverse, which is a term used to describe people interacting in a 3-D version of the internet simultaneously. A third generation of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, expected to include a small screen display, is expected to be ready for consumers in time for the 2025 holiday season. The allure of Luxottica’s Ray-Ban brand is important to the success of a tech device that users are expected to wear on their faces. Luxottica’s ownership of LensCrafters, the prescription-eyewear retailer, also plays a key role in selling the Ray-Ban Meta to users who require prescription lenses. The two companies began working together several years ago for the release of the first generation Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, which went on sale in 2021. The initial device struggled to catch on with consumers, and among the glasses that were sold, only 10% of the Ray-Ban Stories were actively used by their purchasers. The second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses went on sale in September and have done significantly better than their predecessors. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses operate more quickly and have better cameras than their predecessor. The Ray-Ban Meta also includes nascent generative #AI technology that allows users to ask the device for information about the things in front of them, such as the breed of a cat. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses have proven popular for users who want to shoot hands-free videos of their children playing and first-person videos of themselves while going on roller coasters or riding bikes. Meta hasn’t said how well the Ray-Ban Meta glasses have sold, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in April that the device was doing well and that a market for that type of device was developing sooner than he would have expected. Meta sells its own devices to employees at a discount, and offers the Ray-Ban Meta glasses at a 15% discount with a limit of 3 pairs per employee. Its products (especially its serum) gained rapidly cult following Estée Lauder first invested in DECIEM in 2017, increased its stake to become majority owner in 2021, and recently exercised its option to purchase the remaining interests after a three-year period on May 31, 2024 using cash on hand for an estimated 860 million dollars. The total investment approximated 1.7 billion dollars over the three tranches EL reported that Deciem generates between $0.5-1bn sales p.a. Deciem is one of the few successful acquisition The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. completed over the last decade although it is fair to recognize that it was not always easy & happy (cf. the removal of the founder & its subsequent suicide) As a comparison, CeraVe (another science-led affordable skincare brand with a dermo-cosmetic growth model) was acquired by L'Oreal in 2017 for $1.3bn. CeraVe recorded close to $5bn retail sales (Euromonitor) in 2022... Those two transactions are part of the top 10 top ROI M&A transactions in the FMCG industry over the last decade... This week I was honored to receive the Woman Of The Year award at the World Retail Congress, sponsored by Altrua. The criteria, in Lucy Harris’s words, was to identify female leaders with remarkability, a global footprint and brands that were modern and relevant – all done through a meritocratic search. For me, this award stands as an ode to female entrepreneurship in its entirety and I’m humbled to be the recipient this year.   I started Unilever Prestige as a start-up within Unilever 11 years ago and I was convinced that I wanted to do things differently. I always believed that there was an opportunity to create a business unit that puts the authenticity of the brands at the center of the business model and is “future fit”. Our business model celebrates founders, people and culture. We believe in being a force for good for society and the planet and we invest in vocational training and education for experts and consumers in the Beauty and Wellbeing industry.   More than 80% of Unilever Prestige employees are women, and I’m so encouraged that we have great female representation at founder and CEO level, as well as in key functions across the business that have been perceived as traditionally male including finance, R&D and supply chain.   I’ve always been a supporter of women, and my role as chairwoman of the CEW UK allows me to do this at scale for the entire UK beauty industry. If we want to create gender parity on a bigger scale we need to support, mentor and promote each other and the great work that women do. It’s why awards like this one are so important.   If I had to give advice to women starting out on their journey, I would actually take the words that some of our brand founders shared about my leadership of the Unilever Prestige business: ⚡ Do not be afraid to stand out, and have courage to break the norm if you believe it will lead to something greater ⚡ Be comfortable with being uncomfortable – it’s only through bold moves and choices that the magic will happen ⚡ Have conviction and do not take no for an answer if what you are standing for matters ⚡ Radiate and share your knowledge, experience and advice with others   Truly grateful for this award and I remain committed to driving change for the next generation of all leaders.   #womeninbusiness #femaleleaders #beauty #retail #winninginbusiness #genderequality #womensupportingwomen

To Stéphane de La Faverie, The key challenge ahead is to drive Estée Lauder back to growth and reclaim market share. Despite the beauty market's robust expansion, Estée Lauder has been losing ground to newer, more innovative brands. As the new CEO, it's essential to establish a clear vision for our diverse conglomerate. Each brand requires a distinct strategy, while ensuring they collectively serve the consumer market effectively. China's performance is another critical focus area. Our middle-market offerings are struggling as Chinese consumers either trade down to value or up to luxury. Additionally, the prestige market is becoming increasingly competitive with local brands. Balancing the brand equity you’ve created over many decades can be damaged very quickly by overreaching with #markdown to create #freecashflow to just keep the business moving. Only #AI can help you balance, keeping the till ringing, with your brand image. An wonderful article on the claissic dilemma the Luxury brands facing right now The 21st Century has been favorable for "big luxury" players despite the Great Recession in the late 2000s. The number of millionaires worldwide has quadrupled from 15 million in 2000 to 60 million in 2022, with significant wealth creation in China. Luxury brands have catered to middle-class aspirants by introducing new product categories like streetwear. Luxury brands have successfully sold "exclusive" goods through effective marketing strategies, including category segregation and celebrity-fueled campaigns. Brands have sacrificed quality standards to meet growing demand and increase profit margins, while implementing price hikes that surpass inflation rates. However, the post-pandemic period has led to a decline in luxury shopping due to rising interest rates and a cost of living crisis. Brands have further increased prices to protect margins, but this has pushed aspirational consumers away and led to criticism on social media regarding rising prices and declining quality. The average price of luxury goods in Europe has increased by 52 percent since 2019. Luxury brands need to reinvest in quality and reevaluate their pricing to avoid damaging their reputation and mythology in a slowing market. #luxurybrands #luxuryfashion

For 21 years Luxury Institute has led the way in strongly recommending that in luxury and fashion, targeting a demographic is a missed opportunity. You need to target a luxury mindset and an affordability. And yet the myths and half-truths persist. For example, The Luxury Institute, LLC’s research with HNW and UHNW consumers tells us that while older consumers don’t spend as much time on social media because they have super-busy active lives with multi-generational families and responsibilities, and highly successful careers, they are still often online and use social media wisely, for several purposes. And highly educated older HNWs and UHNWs are often far, far more knowledgeable about scientific and tech innovations, including AI, than younger adults. They are also far more luxury savvy across all categories. These older wealthy have also learned that work life is not a marathon-it’s a series of hard, powerful sprints, with lots of leisure time in between. They have far more money and far more time, despite the responsibilities. If your brand seeks to shatter the ageism myths and become a High Performance/High Trust luxury juggernaut to all HNWs and UHNWs, reach out. Another brand’s ignorance is your opportunity.

H&M’s reinvention is a smart move in fashion’s hyper-competitive middle sector. Group Chief Executive Daniel Ervér seems very aware of how proactive brands, even established ones like H&M, need to remain relevant and front-of-mind with their target audience. In an interview with The Business of Fashion, Ervér discussed the brand’s move to rethink its strategy and approach, not focusing only on low price but a wider price and product range targeting the middle sector. Different key elements will come into place as H&M pursues “pure low-price plays, pure demand plays… and the luxury or innovation play.” Specific examples like pop-up stores and on-demand manufacturing makes sense in the middle sector. Standing still is not an option. While industry analysts are critical, I believe Ervér’s strategy is the right thing to do. Hold on here, watch definitions (AI?) – here is another: a dupe is a close replica or alternative of a product, a most often lower price segmented alternative, whereas a counterfeit is a direct copy – and therefore illegal. Unlike counterfeits, dupes in my book do not claim to be the original branded product, nor do they reproduce protected logos. Dupes and money-saving hacks through affordable and/or alternative formats represent the recent trend of ‘loud budgeting’: consumers communicating publicly about these options e.g. in fragrance ranging from minis to body sprays or stand-ins close to the once (or still) desired product, or simply high-quality products at competitive prices. Critical Gen Z and Generation Alpha consumers, not excluded to the Chinese, seem to oppose to the ‘quiet luxury’ trend by saving and communicating openly about their (financial) reasons to do so, as well as their discoveries, not surprisingly mostly social media driven and led. The dupe culture is of all times, however more prominent now – with its impact not restricted to China. It may be a trend, then it does send a signal to the luxury sector.

Dear friends, peers and colleagues.   After three amazing decades in #luxuryretail at #poloralphlauren #hugoboss and #giorgioarmani working with the most beautiful product, in gorgeous work environments and with incredibly talented people, I have come to learn of an ugly, insidious evil that I cannot turn away from. #humantrafficking is now the largest global criminal enterprise and has so many far-reaching tentacles such as #sextrafficking #childsexualabusematerial #illicitmassage #sextortion to name a few.   90% of women who are trafficked were sexually abused in their youth 42% of the women are trafficked by a family member 80% of women will return to their trafficker if they don’t have a safe place to go   I am now involved with Onehope Refuge, a nonprofit safe home for women escaping sex trafficking with their children. On any given day, survivors are involved in trauma-informed counseling, continuing education opportunities, life-skills training, and/or faith-based devotions. Research shows it takes a minimum of two years to stabilize, restore and recover from the severe and complex PTSD experienced by sexually victimized women. Onehope’s holistic care model was designed with this data in mind. Simply put, we are in it for the long-haul. The stories of #healing, #growth and #love are truly extraordinary, and the children playing, going to school and being tutored give us all hope for a better future.  Recently, Onehope Refuge kicked off our first-ever year-end defendHERs giving campaign. The topic of innovation is top of mind in the performance running shoe market – especially if you ask Nike, which has been widely criticized for having a lackluster product pipeline by analysts and the Street in recent months.
