All the best to the new Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering (BIIE), which is launching as an independent research institute in Basel/Switzerland with a mission to develop novel immune-based diagnostics and therapeutics and address gaps in advanced healthcare technologies, thus improving the health of children and young people around the globe. The emerging field of immune engineering leverages advanced technologies to understand and develop immune-based solutions for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. Integrating expertise in immunology, molecular and cellular engineering, genomics, artificial intelligence and other computational methods enables scientists to study immune responses at an unprecedented level of detail—from how individual cells react to pathogens to how genetic diversity within populations influence such responses. New paper alert! A collaboration between scientists in the labs of Julius Brennecke and Ulrich Elling at IMBA, Alex Stark at Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) and Stefan L Ameres at the Max Perutz Labs Vienna has resulted in the development of a novel system for protein mass tagging, called ORFtag. The new system allows researchers to systematically study protein function. By leveraging a retrovirus—a type of virus that can sneak its genetic material into the DNA of the cells it infects—, ORFtag inserts a small piece of DNA at millions of random positions in the target cell's genome. This DNA produces a "tag" that attaches to newly made proteins, making it possible to identify and study them in large-scale parallel assays. ORFtag enables researchers to efficiently and affordably explore the roles of nearly all proteins in a cell, opening up new possibilities for studying cellular functions and disease mechanisms.
