Microsoft Copilot found to be unreliable in bias detection As organizations increasingly use GenAI like Microsoft Copilot to gain productivity, they rarely consider the legal risk with regard to its language bias. Over the past few months, we conducted a study analyzing Copilot's ability to detect bias. It shows that Microsoft Copilot carries bias. And even if prompted to write inclusively, it manages not so well to do so. With regard to the EU AI Act, the US AI Directives, and Anti-Discrimination laws in both regions, biased outputs of Copilot can get a company into legal trouble. We want to congratulate psycholinguist Pascal Gygax, who has received the Marcel Benoist Swiss Science Prize, often called the “Swiss Nobel Prize,” for his groundbreaking work on how language shapes our perception of the world. 🏆 The Generic Masculine: Why it’s more dangerous than you think His investigations into the influence of a masculinised language on our perception of the world are particularly relevant. His experiments show that the use of the generic masculine (meaning the sole use of male word forms for all gender identities in gendered languages like German, French, etc.) is not interpreted generically by the brain, due to its functionality. If we read a word in the male form, for example "baker", we interpret it as “male equals men”, e.g. in front of our inner eye without us realizing it, an image of a man pops up. This means there is no automatic association with women or non-binary persons when using a male generic. This has far-reaching social consequences, examples being the choice of a profession or in the case of job vacancy advertisements. Professions perceived as typically male, such as surgeon (German: Chirurg), generate greater interest among girls and young women if they are also described in the female form (German: Chirurgin). #DiversityEquityInclusion #InclusiveLanguage #MaleGeneric

How is diversity experienced in Switzerland 🇨🇭 ? "Gemeinsam verschieden?" is a large study conducted by the GDI Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute and commissioned by Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund exploring how diversity is experienced in Switzerland. With four national languages, 26 cantons, and a high percentage of foreign-born residents, the country is a melting pot of cultures. If you don't want to read it in full, we summarized the main takeaways for you: ➡️Overall Positive Attitudes Toward Diversity: Most people in Switzerland view diversity favorably, especially valuing different perspectives and the rich cultural exchange in daily life. ➡️Bias Toward Specific Groups: Despite the positive attitudes, biases still exist, particularly toward groups such as asylum seekers, Muslims, and political opponents. Political orientation, in particular, is a significant source of polarization. ➡️Impact of Personal Contact: Personal relationships and interactions are crucial in reducing biases. People who know individuals from different backgrounds generally have fewer negative feelings toward those groups. ➡️Limited Social Integration: Many social circles remain homogeneous, with minimal interaction between certain groups (e.g., rich vs. poor, urban vs. rural, left- vs. right-wing supporters). ➡️Role of Youth: Younger generations show polarized attitudes toward diversity, both strongly positive and negative, challenging the common perception of them being uniformly progressive. ➡️Need for Facilitated Encounters: The study highlights the importance of creating opportunities for meaningful interactions between different social groups to foster greater acceptance and reduce societal fragmentation.
