Shaping 2025: NatureRe’s European Team Comes Together in Zurich 🇨🇭 (Join Us) As a Swiss-based company with a team spread across Europe, North and South America, virtual collaboration is part of our daily routine. Last week, however, the European team had the pleasure of meeting in person in Zurich! We started our meeting as we always do, celebrating successes and achievements since the last session, and wrapped up with the “Big 5” priorities for the next three months. A highlight of the day was a team performance workshop led by Birte Kattelmann-Jagdt. She prepared by conducting 1:1 interviews with most of us to identify key dynamics in roles/responsibilities, workflows/processes, and culture. With an international team, there are always cultural nuances to navigate, like balancing approaches between Colombia and Switzerland. We also had the pleasure of meeting new team members, Susanne Wittig and Stefan Wörner, who recently joined the fundraising team, and we’re thrilled to have them on board. Special thanks to Christian Mueller, our board member, for hosting us in his offices in Zurich. To top it all off, we shared a cozy fondue dinner and enjoyed coffee thoughtfully sent by our Colombian colleague, Juan Zambrano. We’re growing and hiring! If you’re passionate about making a difference for nature and want to join our dynamic team, apply now: https://lnkd.in/ekkQtqQp Daniel Pfeifer Marie-Sophie Teyssier Marco Meli, CFA Olivier Kobel Maria Guadalupe Florez Vanegas Stefanie Hauer Sven Kapell Nicole Keiler Daire Kelly Michael Wells, CFA Olivia Gumbel

The Growing Gap in Nature Finance – Why Forests and Natural Capital are Key to Our Future Since 1970, global wildlife populations have dropped by 69%, and more than 420 million hectares of forest have been lost in 30 years. Nature loss is costing the global economy trillions each year, with Europe alone losing 3% of its GDP annually due to environmental degradation. Despite this, natural services like climate regulation and water filtration, provided by forests, remain largely unpriced. Between 1992 and 2014, natural capital per capita dropped by 40%, while produced capital doubled in the same period. The Paulson Institute estimates that the nature-finance gap could be as high as $711 billion annually. Currently, public sector funding accounts for 82% of the total financial flows for protecting and restoring nature—around $165 billion annually. Yet, philanthropic finance for climate mitigation represents less than 2% of the $810 billion of global donations in 2021. Private finance for nature remains severely underfunded, estimated at just $35 billion in 2023—a mere fraction of global equity markets, which exceed $100 trillion. It’s estimated that paying for the use of natural capital and investing in nature-positive projects could generate $10 trillion annually and create 400 million jobs. The World Economic Forum’s latest report “Investing in Natural Capital: Innovations Supporting Much-Needed Financing for Nature” showcases how a combination of new technologies, financial instruments and business models are able to make nature finance a more attractive proposition for private investors. The 60 models identified by the WEF across three key socioeconomic systems could collectively be worth $10.1 trillion in additional business value by 2030. At NatureRe Capital AG, we innovate with nature finance. Our business model demonstrates that restoring forests can yield measurable returns, benefitting both investors and the planet. Join a nature positive journey. Invest in nature, restore biodiversity, remove carbon at scale. #Forests #NaturalCapital #NatureFinance #Sustainability #InvestmentInNature https://lnkd.in/eNVufhYC

🚩 “Significant milestone” is how the Carbon Herald describes our catalytic investment to support and scale an Assisted Natural Regeneration project in partnership with NatureRe Capital AG — and we couldn’t agree more. 🌱 💚 Not only will this project “restore biodiversity, improve water quality, reduce fire risks, and create local jobs” while removing an estimated 18 million tonnes of CO2e, it’s also a prime example of the power and potential of our “innovative finance model that underpins this effort.” 💪 👀 Read the full article 👇: https://lnkd.in/gFuWNknH

Limited Progress COP29 Azerbaijan. What's the Urgent Way Forward? COP29 has concluded, but the results fall short of the transformative change needed to address the #climate #crisis. While there were some small positive steps forward, progress remains limited. The urgency of climate action continues to outpace the commitments made, leaving critical gaps in funding, implementation, and ambition. Nature remains a vastly underutilised solution, despite its ability to deliver 1/3 of the necessary climate mitigation. Global climate funding still fails to adequately recognise and support nature’s role in addressing the crisis. +100 organisations, businesses, and Indigenous groups issued a #Nature #Statement, emphasising the need to embed nature into climate strategies. As Kiryssa Kasprzyk of Conservation International stated, “The numbers don’t lie: Nature holds at least 1/3 of the solution to climate change, yet it receives only a fraction of global climate funding.” We cannot afford another climate #COP where nature is sidelined. New climate commitments, such as ambitious NDC targets from the UK, Brazil, and the UAE, mark a positive shift, but the reality is stark: developing nations continue to grapple with insufficient climate finance. The new $300 billion annual target under the New Collective Quantified Goal is a step forward, yet it is far from the $1.3 trillion required, and inflation-adjusted projections show it may barely double the funding levels of today. Meanwhile, most of this money remains in the form of loans rather than grants, limiting its impact in the regions that need it most. The compliance carbon market saw a bright spot with #Article6 agreements, finalising frameworks for country-to-country carbon trading under Article 6.2 and launching an international carbon market under Article 6.4. These developments provide a much-needed boost to the integrity of compliance markets and are likely to strengthen voluntary markets, building investor confidence and accelerating funding for high-integrity projects. NatureRe Capital AG is working to be at the forefront of these developments, exceeding standards for nature-based removals. By pushing for the highest #quality and #integrity in project development, we aim to set a benchmark that ensures environmental outcomes go beyond compliance, securing long-term benefits for nature and people alike. As we look ahead to #COP30 in Belém, it’s clear that #private #finance will play a critical role in scaling the market and accelerating project development. We cannot afford to wait for public mechanisms alone to bridge the funding gap. By leveraging innovative financial models, we can unlock private investment at scale, creating profitable solutions that drive climate action. On the road to Belém, NatureRe is committed to ensuring that nature becomes a central part of climate discussions and that new financial frameworks position nature as a core asset in the global transition to sustainability.

Colombia is Ranked the Top Country for Carbon Credit Investments in 2024. According to Abatable’s VCM Investment Attractiveness Index, Colombia is the most attractive country for voluntary carbon market (VCM) investments, scoring 81, thanks to its robust carbon market framework, political stability, and immense biodiversity. As one of the world’s 17 mega diverse nations, Colombia is uniquely positioned to deliver impactful nature-based carbon credits, with over 142 million tonnes issued since the market's inception. The Index highlights three key pillars where Colombia excels: 1. Global Carbon Market Readiness: Colombia demonstrates a strong ecosystem for carbon project development, active Article 6 engagement, and a blend of compliance and voluntary carbon pricing strategies. 2. Investment Landscape: political stability and investor-friendly policies further enhance its appeal. 3. Climate, Nature & People Opportunity: rich biodiversity and CO2 reduction potential place Colombia at the forefront of nature-based solutions. With the VCM evolving, renewed focus on carbon removal initiatives is boosting market trust, paving the way for financial and environmental gains. Investors have much to gain as countries like Colombia lead with strategic policies, supporting ambitious climate goals and mechanisms. Operating in Antioquia, NatureRe Capital AG is proud to be part of Colombia’s commitment to a sustainable, nature-centered future. #CarbonMarket #Colombia #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Nature #Carbon #COP29 https://lnkd.in/eNUjSsMw
